How many of you are so excited you can barely sleep because your racing this weekend?  Throw off some of that nervous energy by telling us all about your race plans!

For those of us not racing, let's talk about how you handle heat!  What's your pre, during and post strategy to stay hydrated and well fueled on the bike and run? how much do you drink? what else do you do????? help the MG out.

No racing for me... My plan for the heat next week - leave it...  Trading it in for altitude...  Family vacation to Colorado...  Running should be uh, interesting.

Early in the summer I was running in the noon day heat once at least once per week.  Schedule has not worked out for that lately, but even running at 8:30-9:00PM is still hot (low to mid 90's with increasing humidity..)  Recently I started taking something to drink on any run longer than about 40-45minutes and it has helped tremendously!  I try to remember to drink some about every 15 minutes or so...  I really need to work on that on the bike...

On a deserted island:

1.)What's the one cd you would take with you?

2.)What is the one type of food you would take with you?

3.)What is the one material item you would bring (aside from family)?

kkcbelle - 2010-07-21 6:57 AM No racing here. We are taking the fam to Victoria, BC (via ferry) for a quick jaunt. It's one of our favorite quick vacation get-aways -- feels like going to Europe and it's only a 3-hour boat ride!

I'm hardly one to ask about heat, ha ha!! Prior to my IM, I added Nuun to my water for 2-3 days and worked hard to make sure I drinking enough (monitored by urine color and frequency). I'm not sure about during racing -- maybe adjust RPE depending on HOW hot it is? I am off to Arizona in a couple of weeks and need to do a long run while there, but I have a feeling I'll do it in a treadmill as it could be 90 degrees or more by 8am and I can only get up so early on vacation (especially with my party animal in-laws)...

Good luck to anyone racing!!!

How does Victoria feel like Europe? All the old people walking around in a daze?

It's mostly the architecture in the harbor area (where we stay), the fact that it's a very walking-friendly city... gorgeous flowers hanging in the summer, lots of awesome outdoor energy. It's just the "feel" of it -- hard to put my finger on it! Do you get there much? Do you know what I'm talking about?

I have family in Naniamo. So we've been to Victoria a few times. The Empress Hotel? Stayed there. the harbour area is very nice for sure. Victoria is where most of the pro Canadian Triathletes train and live for most of the year.

dalessit - 2010-07-21 8:10 AM Sam and I are doing a sprint, was the first one she did so I think this is the 4th year doing it.

LOL, We get back friday night, daughters birthday party Saturday, kids go home with parents, we get back in the car and drive 90 minutes to stay in another hotel so we can get up early on sunday to do the race, sleeping in your own bed is highly overrated, with business travel, staying at my parents for a race 2 weeks ago and this trip I have slept in my own bed once in 2 weeks...

I would really like to win my AG here, been BOP (1st year) 2nd (2nd year) and 4th (last year)

300M swim, 10Mi bike and 5k.

Need to go 58 minutes or so, maybe faster to win AG.

Why did you not tell the gentlemen in the group to check out the one thread in you peleton forum? Um the girls of TdF??? nice work Mr. Admin.

heat and humidity.  two different animals.  a monster when combined.

the one thing people always tend to lose focus on (ha!) is the mental game.  look at all the threads and people's logs talking about it.  "what do i do."  "i hate it."  "when will it end."  yeah, my logs to.  LISTEN to your body.  don't even think of trying to maintain a normal pace for your workout or you will get crushed.  understand this and accept it, know that when things start to cool down you WILL see results.  in the several years i've been running in it down here i've never once heard anyone ever say they are used to it.

1. Since you guys have the PJ covered, I would take either Candlebox or Bush's Sixteen Stone

2. Pizza (I could make beer from stuff on the island, right??)

3. Practical - goggles to help me fish, or something to play my one CD on - that would be torture to just look at it.  Comfort - Mt. Bike

Same with altitude (Andy!), same with very cold weather. I'm just running by feel this summer, leaving my heart rate monitor at home and not looking at my watch.

No racing for me this weekend. Good luck to everyone who is racing!!

And Jeff, sorry I forgot to answer we are in Sandstone, MN, about 80 or so miles north of the Cities on 35.

There is a long trail that runs from Hinkley to Duluth that is all paved, awesome trail, and the 2-3 times we have been on it we have seen maybe 3 other people.  I think it's more popular in the winter for Snowmobiles.

Did you get any of the Tornado on Sunday?  We went through about 2-3 tornado warnings/watches on our way through upper wisconson, lower Minnesota.

Matt--great compliment to receive....I would be so happy if someone said that to me....keep it up!

Steve--so happy you are back in action and training for something.....you're training for something right?

Tracy--sounds like you have a full weekend so I totally get why you don't want to blow yourself up on the swim.  I'm a little suprised that you can't fit an insulated bottle on your downtube....you look tall Girl!

Sam/Tony--I am not sure how long it will take me to forgive you for not calling me on your way back through Madison.

Birdy--I don't ever envision myself being stranded on a desert island, but if I were I would take my IPOD (not a CD), eat a lot of pizza and keep up with what is going on with the MG using on my pc.

So this weekend, I have a 100m ride at an FTP of 65% (means I'll be out there forever)....I'll be in Minocqua and the surrounding area so very little retail to buy additonal water...I'm trying out my mini female camelback.  If I like it, I might use it for my IM on the bike to help keep me hydrated in the heat.  One other thing I have been doing is electrolytes two days before my events, 1 salt stick at B/L/D and then another two with breakfast the morning of the race.  Not sure if it helps, but I really underdrank in Racine, I don't take in electrolytes in any sports drink and I didn't cramp at all.

I dont know what I would do on a long race, I am a big guy and go through a lot of water. On that century i filled the camelback up 2.5 times, 4 or 6 bottles of water and 4 bottles of gatorade. Mixed with 4 or 5 gu's and 4 cliffbars. Granted I was not physically prepared and I think this is all that kept me afloat. I am assuming my body gets better and more functional the more weight I lose and the better I get.

Ew, no! The mix changes, but current fave is a mix of raisin bran and granola topped with frozen blueberries. The milk left over is cold, sweet, and blue!
