Question for you guys... and I don't remember if this has already been answered in last year's thread (yes, I did read through it - great info!)... but are most of you racing Placid on a tri bike or road?

Hi Aggie21 - I recently just upgraded to a tri bike from a road bike and plan on using the tri bike for Lake Placid. My decision came down to the fact that I wanted a tri bike for all races (especially Olympic) to improve speed... but not specifically for this race. So I agree that if you have the resources and really want one you should do it, but I wouldn't necessarily get one just for this one race (especially if you already have aero bars on your road bike and love it). I'm still very new to biking so being on a road bike would probably be more comfortable for me in LP but hopefully after doing all my training on the tri bike I'll feel comfortable come race day! Good luck and let us know what you decide! There are lots of good sales on bikes now!

Thanks for the responses - lots of good info!  My boyfriend has a good challenge for me.... if I exceed the capabilities of my road bike, then he'll buy me a tri bike! hah - and my 30th birthday is coming up in March so it's a good challenge to get better and faster on the bike by then!

I think right now, I'm hesitant to spend the $$ on a tri bike, especially since the LP rental house I got is costing me an arm and a leg!  But I still have some time.... even though I would want to get as much time as possible on the sucker if I got one!

Good luck with the new bike Ryan - I'm sure I'll see you whizzing by me on the course!

Thanks for the wishes about the knee.

Other than the first few days after the injury I was able to swim(with a very weak kick, and careful coming of the walls) and bike on the trainer so it didn't affect that portion of my training too much.

Just ran for the first time since I hurt the knee 15 days ago. Took it very easy and only ran 2.2 miles at around an 8:20 pace. I really felt like running farther but my fear of re-injuring something stopped me. No pain in the knee just some general stiffness. I'm planning on slowing working back up to my normal mileage over the next two weeks.

Now all I have to do is manage to remember to stay off the moguls when I get back on the slopes. Laughing

Smart to be cautious about the knee as missing a few runs now is a lot of later training through injury.

I've been struggling with various knee issues since May. I developed a second issue due to weakness and changes in gait from first injury.

Have a super weekend everyone and enjoy your training~

aggie21 - 2011-01-14 11:40 AM Hey Placid Peeps!  Week 2 of official training is coming to a close and I have successfully hit all my prescribed workouts.  It's mostly been testing and building up strength in all 3 disciplines.  So far I'm loving it - and not minding the early morning wake up calls!

Question for you guys... and I don't remember if this has already been answered in last year's thread (yes, I did read through it - great info!)... but are most of you racing Placid on a tri bike or road?  I currently have a Jamis road bike that I love and I got a great deal on about a year and a half ago.  It has an aero style frame and after putting Profile Design aero bars on it, I feel so comfortable.  I know placid is a hilly course so I'm thinking I won't miss having a tri bike (well, besides being green with envy that 90% have them!).  Do any vets think I would be at any disadvantage on this particular course on a road bike?  Happy Training!

Hey Aggie! my name is Kate and I just wanted to say I'll be right by your side girl in my Jamis road bike with aero bars!!! Yay!... I was having a little hang up about my bike too Smile  so thank you for posting... thank you cusetri for your answer... I really don't care about my time (this timeWink.... since it is my first IM... IF I do another I'm sure I'll be bent on going faster and then may have to spring for the tri bike Smile)

A note on the road bike -- one of the guys who works at the tri-shop and is on my tri team raced LP in 2009 and 2010.  In 2009 he used a tri bike and in 2010 he used a cervelo road bike with aero-bars, and YUP he biked faster and ran faster.  Go figure.

Tomorrow I wrap up Week 3 of my Be IronFit plan.  I am really digging the plan and I like how you have set days each week for when you work out.  I'm very happy with my Run and Swim right now and the trainer is starting to come along

If you guys and gals notice, the days are getting longer, 7 more weeks till March!!  The beauty of grinding it out for just 7 more weeks inside, is that when we get the opportunity to train outdoors, training will feel like a breeze.

I didn't race in 2009, but I am 99.9% sure 2010 had MUCH easier conditions.  weather was perfect. also, bike course was faster due to the route change.

TT bike will be faster, everything else equal.

I am COUTNING the days to March......actually, 4 more weeks I can go to Florida....

Only true way to know which is faster is ride with same power on tri and road bike and see how times compare yet weather conditions especially wind coming back to LP can effect time as well.  Often fitness is not the same going into one IM compared to another so hard to take away bike is truly the difference.

Anyone considering going up the Endurance Nation weekend for their tri-rally June 9th-12th?

It's free and fits I think okay into my life depending on some kids activities. I do have HIM the next weekend but I do short tapers for those.

You will see both road bikes and tri bikes in LP. Some road bikes will have aerobars and some will not. At some point, you will likely pass someone riding a $5000 tri bike (I have done it and I am not fast). The key is to ride whatever bike you choose to race on a lot during your training. For your 1st IM, you might be more concerned about comfort versus speed. I still race on a road bike with aerobars. I tell myself that I will switch over to a tri bike when I lose weight and get in top shape. If I want to get faster, it is all about training harder and smarter and not, at this point, about spending several thousand dollars on a tri bike.

Hi Kate!  Glad to hear I'm not the only one fretting already!    This is my first IM as well, and my number one goal is to finish!
@gatri33 - I agree on your philospophy... I'm trying to get faster and fitter on my road bike now before I spend $$ on a tri bike. Thanks for the comments!

Holy cow am I late to this group.  I saw the forum for "Iron Distance Race Groups" and didn't think to look in it for specific IM races, but I am SOOOO glad I found this. Thank you to everybody for posting here as the info has been extremely helpful so far!

1. Is this your first IM?
- Yes.  In fact it will only be my 2nd TRI race ever (first was the NJ State Sprint race last July).  I'm kind of mental in that I do much better overall when I set lofty goals for anything.  It really gets me in the right frame of mind to plan better, execute, and succeed.  Or maybe I'm just crazy, period.  Either way I'm okay with that...

2. Have you done LP before?
- Nope, but looking forward to it!

3. What are your goals for the 2010 race?
- Thinking that both KQ and becoming filthy rich will depend on a lottery, my goal is to finish under 13h.

4.How/Why did you select the Lake Placid Race?
- Only Mdot race within a reasonable driving distance and got a recommendation that it will make a great family destination spot as well (heading down several days early with the family).

5. Do you have any specific questions that you wish addressed about LP (the race, training etc)
- Yes, several:

a. I have a 2010 Cervelo P2 I got on a great clearance deal... Fitted well (though I've lost another 15 lbs since the fitting, so I may remove a riser or two...)  Gearing is stock at a 50/34 front and 12-25 rear.  With all the talk on gearing here and the link to ST, I'm already running a compact crank in the front.  Would I be best changing as well to an 11-28 cassette to give me the extra gear in case I need it?  I'll most likely be around 6:30 for the bike (less if I can get some long hill training in this spring).  Looks like the differences are:

11-28:
11-12-13-14-15-17-19-21-24-28 T.
12-25: 12-13-14-15-16-17-19-21-23-25 T.

I'm not on the 11-12 much (if at all) so it looks like I'll be giving up 16 in exchange for that 28.  I'm 6' 186lbs (down from 218) and my goal is under 180lbs by July (I've still got some mid section to lose).  I guess I can always ride some hills to see how my cadence/HR do, but I'm a huge fan of training with what you will use so I don't want to wait too long if I change cassettes.

b. Anybody use MyAthleteGPS or a similar device/service?  This is a LONG day not just for us, but for our families, and mine has been incredibly supportive.  Thinking that the attention span of a 5 and 8 year old will be about what mine generally is, I though this would be a great way of letting them keep track of me so they are not hanging around all day wondering where the heck I am

c. Wheel rentals.  Any advice or opinions as to which services are the most reliable?  I came across www.racedaywheels.com.  Ideally I'd like to buy wheels since this has become a great addiction, but that is my purchase for next year (bike and other gear did enough damage in 2010).  $190 to rent for the day.  I "may" have a good enough quarter to get a set used and their prices look reasonable as well.  Any advice on a combo set for Zipps (404, 808, 1080, disc, what would you recommend as a great overall set?)  Any disadvantage to buying them used if they are checked out?

d. Ok, this one is more of a request than a question.  It appears that a great number of BT folk will be at this race and I'd love the opportunity to actually meet you (nice to put faces to posts).  So, it is possible that you all wear the exact same shirt/helmet/swimsuit as your avatar and stay in the same pose so I can recognize you?

Thank you again for everybody who contributes here!  Just a great forum and great group of people!

- Brett

Too, too funny you guys - I knew I shoulda picked a better pose! How 'bout we all dress as each other instead?

Yes - welcome aboard, Brett. Not sure what gearing I will be using yet - gonna see how my power and hill climbing comes along. I will definitely be riding a compact as well. I have enjoyed some success on my climbing on my road bike over the years with a compact and 12/25, but I have swapped the 12 off and replaced it with an 11 so that I can keep my sweet little 16. I have never missed the 12, been happy to have the 11 on monster descents (which I hear IMLP may have?) and the shifting is just fine...

But like I said - will see what climbing on the tri bike brings - I have never taken it up to the mountains.

Oh, I know.  And yes Cuse - you are 1000% percent right: a triathlon tt bike is always going to be faster than a road bike.  "Aero trumps weight, even on the hilliest of course".  This has been told to me by many a triathlete, including a Pro.  However my point is, perhaps at the amateur ranks, on any given day or hilly course, perhaps there isn't a huge difference.  But yes, unless it's a mountain stage in the Alps, the faster bike is a triathlon bike.

And for the record, I've never owned or ridden a road bike.  How do you like them apples   Well once, I rode a road bike for like 2 minutes.
