It looks like a few people had posted this question and no had answered it yet, but I'll throw it out here again...does anyone have any details on the online tracking they claim they're going to offer?  I didn't see any reference to it in the race packet.

The information arrived in my inbox a few minutes ago in the form of the latest newsletter.  Folks will need your bib # to track you.

Lol, just got that email as well.  I guess I should have waited another 30 seconds before posting.  Smile

The pier at the Blockade Runner is easier to find than the parking lot behind T1, so let's all meet at the Blockade Runner pier at 7 am. At 7:10 we can shuttle cars down to the T1 parking lot, and swimmers back, for a 7:30 (sharp) swim start.

Sound like a plan?

Should we swap email/cell phone numbers via pm in case there are any last minute communication needs?

Hate to raise the water temp/man card issue again, but I've never done an OWS in less than 82 degree lakes. So, below what water temp do I start thinking about neoprene cap and/or swim socks? btw, here's a great water temp link - just mouse over the squares/triangles, etc  http://www.cormp.org/

in 2009 we had a few spouses that weren't racing, so we all met at the Blockade Runner and the spouses drove to the T1 area at the Wrightsville Beach Police Dept and drove us all back to the Blockade Runner.  We then went for a little bike ride through Wrightsville Beach to make sure the bikes made the trip okay, which proved to be a wise move for me as I had a shifting issue as one of my cables was messed up.

jbjb110,

Last year I believe that the water temperature was about 5-7 degrees cooler than it will be this year.  I only did the HIM, but I didn't wear swim socks nor a neoprene cap.  I did however, wear a silicone swim cap underneath the event swim cap.  Although my hands and feet were slightly numb by the end of the swim, it wasn't all that bad.  I think keeping your head warm is the most important thing.

My advice would be to do a practice swim and see how you feel in the water; each individual has his/her own threshold level.

I've been asking the same questions (I'm doing the half B2B) because I'm a total wus when it comes to cold water. My OWS friends suggest that for these water temps (mid-upper 60's), we should be good enough just doubling up on latex swim caps. As far as booties are concerned, my scuba-diving friend said that they help a little as far as comfort getting in the water but her feet still go numb during swims in these temps anyway. If your feet do go numb, take care not to bend them back when putting your bikes shoes on. You'd hate to have a rude awakening when your feet come back to life. (This is advice from the same friend). BTW - is there anything about water temps available yet?

Water temp... I just swam the course Saturday, with nice weather forecast the rest of the week it should not change much, I swear you won't need booties. My face was a little shocked at first, but not to bad the water will feel great compared to the air temp. Bare feet of mine which I think are sensitive were fine.

Thanks kenbert, booties stay home.

Anyone know if we have to wear our belt+bib on the bike? If not, then I'll stick it in T2 bag that's getting checked in on Friday. If so, then needs to stay with T1 bag. Couldn't find this info in the guide, though I've only devoted about three hours to studying the various intricacies of this event Sealed

I don't think you have to wear your number on the bike. And you might want to pack those booties just in case--I'm just sayin....

Bought some booties (Neo Sport 2mm) from Amazon thinking they'd be nice to have on for the jog to T1. Tried them out in the pool and they not only feel strange but are literaly - a drag. Big difference between bare feet and booties. I say leave them at home. The over/under on the water temp is probably 68. See everyone in a few days!

It's been awhile since anyone's asked about the bridge that takes us out of Wrightsville Beach - The one that's covered by a grate.

Riding on the grate won't feel any different than riding on dry pavement UNLESS for some reason you get too aggressive with your brakes. Smooth speed/steady pedalling/straight line and you'll be over before you know it, even if it's wet from any rain.

Some advice for race day? If at all possible, time your approach for maximum space buffer from other riders. A squirrely cyclist going down stands a good chance of taking out anyone next to, or behind, and wrecking because of someone else would be an ugly way to start the bike.

My .02USD/YMMV

If it's wet, all bets are off.

On the up side, you will not be at full cruising speed when you get to this bridge.

I think I read somewhere that they would cover the grate with carpet (or something) in the event of rain.

But it won't rain, so we don't have to worry about it.  ;-)

^^^^

Can even happen to the best of riders- and even on dry pavement.

One more word of advice to my fellow BTers...The Town Of Wrightsville Beach is a wonderful little beach town with friendly people and very good facilities, the town budget I am sure is funded by parking tickets, and they are relentless. There is free parking in the park at T1 just about everywhere else is .25 cents for 8 minutes and 2.00 an hour. 6am -6pm

It will be covered by a carpet regardless, and you won't have much speed nor need it through this area.  If any morons pass you and plaster themselves on the steel grating laugh at them because they deserve it.  going slow on this little bridge will have no bearing on your race.

Ditto for the parking enforcement in downtown Wilmington.

I never noticed a parking meter in the area of the race of Wrightsville Beach or near the Blockade Runner so the pre swim or race morning shouldn't be an issue for most to worry about.

I don't think that it was covered last year for the half, however, I do remember that it was not an issue.
