That's mine as well, if i lose count i underestimate.  A few extra laps won't hurt.  But I can generally figure it out with a quick look at the clock knowing approx what my pace is.

Then again Jorge writes me swim workouts for the short attention span so rarely am i swimming more than a 200 without a break.

x2...it kind of helps when I call out loud what lap Im on. Somehow it's easier for me to remember but then I sound like a dork. It also helps not to swim more than @ 300 nonstop.

Major BC - 2012-01-17 9:11 PM Two things from me:1) I didn't run this weekend but xc skied 12k and now the inside of my thighs are flipping killing me. Also got a few blisters for the effort. This is what happens when you overdue your first ski of the season. 2) I found the most liberating training tool ever. For 2 years now I've been swimming laps in the winter and forgetting which lap I was on. I never wanted one of those really expensive devices that can tell when you flip and such so I struggled - until now. I have found a finger lap counter that cost $25 on Amazon. http://www.sportcount.com/.I'm free to lose my count anytime without doing a make up lap! I'm free, I'm free! It's wonderful! Most of you have probably already have one but I thought I'd share my joy.

This is awesome. Thanks for posting.

Training is going: 100 laps yesterday in the pool at a slow and steady pace and interval running today on a treadmill in the gym. I've started this treadmill run where I: warm up at 5.5 mph on a 6 degree incline for 10 minutes. Run pace 6.5 mph and 5.5 degrees for 10 minutes. Rest pace at 5.5 mph at 5.5 degrees for 5 minutesRun pace 7.0 mph at 5.0 degrees for 5 minutesRest pace at 5.5 mph at 5.0 degrees for 5 minutesRun pace at 7.5 mph at 4.5 degrees for 5 minutes Rest pace at 5.5 mph for 4.5 degrees for 5 minutes. I'm not a strong runner but this s helping. I did it with ease tonight and will increase speed next week. Happy training all.

Love the idea but he plans are not real cheap. Plus I'd worry that my heart stops during a ride and I read about it first on the screen. Or, my HR monitor goes bad and i have a heart attack because I think I'm having a heart attack.

I think the best that can be said from here is that it is going.  I'm getting most of the workouts in but I don't notice that I'm getting stronger.  And, about once a week or so, I'm totally crashing by falling asleep in the wrong room or mid-sentence while reading stories to the kids.  I don't think my body is adapting yet.  It's early though...

Things I noticed since started training:

- my legs are sore.
-I count my stroke in 25m pool and trying to do less stroke each lap
-sleep is longer and deeper
-I watch my HR when I go up the stairs
-when the weatherman talks about wind,I can only think about aero position on the bike
-everytime I eat, I quickly follow up with water
-I count my strides like I do when I swim

Are any other first timers (IM) attempting self-training for this race (without a pre-written plan)?  I did make my own that I will follow but its only the weekend rides, runs and bricks for pace.  Some people have likened this to doing surgery on yourself but I insist on "feeling" my way through this.  Its helpful to hear how others are progressing.  Thanks.

I'm a first timer but I'm doing Don finks be iron fit plan. Just so much easier when I only.have to worry about what the work out is for the day rather than guessing my pace, length of training, food intake etc. I did my first marathon training and I was unknowleagable with pacing tempo and long run so I blew up the second part of.my.marathon. with finks training.plan I feel a peace of mind. I follow his teachings to the T and I feel slow gradual changes that sometimes I even feel ready to tale on ironman even though I'm still in base phase. That's just me some may be very successful on their own. Maybe next year when I'm more familiar with the course and know my body better I can tweak and create my.own to work well against lake placid.

I am attempting the IM for the first time and have written my own plan. It is a modification from the many, many books I've read and worked around my schedule.

Since I stayed at a Holiday Inn once (and I'm an MD) so I feel that I can do this...ha

When I trained for Louisville, my first IM, had this same experience.  I remember being so exhausted that I thought I would never recoup.  Several times I got up in the middle of dinner to go to bed b/c I couldn't stay awake long enough to eat.  Once I got to a recovery week it all seemed to pass and within a few weeks my body had adapted to the training regimen.

I'm in a recovery week this week, as I suspect are all of the Be Iron Fit folks, and I'm taking lots of latitude to skip a couple workouts (Tuesday & Thursday).  It has been a great week to catch up on rest, family time, and some stuff that needs to be done around the house.  Next week I'll get back to the full routine and wait until my next recovery week to catch up again.

C'mon James, that's not a bit much..... for a stud like you.   Plus that's all aerobic Zone 2, so it's smart & safe.

For me, my Swimming is excellent and I am two months ahead of where it was last year.  My Biking is also in a good spot, and I know I have more power and strength than this point last year.  My Running has been hindered by a groin injury I sustained back in November, but my Run is okay.

Funny thing is, because Running is my strongest discipline, even if I lose Run speed if my Swim and Bike continue to get stronger going into Lake Placid, I'll likely have a better Run split and overall time despite having less Run speed than last year.  Strange thing this triathlon.

4 weeks into a modified Iron fit Intermidate program

(I am using the competeive programs cycling Part)

I have not missed one workout yet!!!  Body feels great !!

Dropped 11 seconds off my 400 since day 3 and my pace is coming down and HR is staying the same so I would say all systems are go!! I started at 185 pounds and I am at 177 with the hopes of being between 165-170 on race day!!

Sounds like you are on track for an excellent IM, Rusty.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading your race report. Very helpful.

Thank you.

I am taking some ideas from the Fitzgerald plan, but am mostly on my own. Training was going great until close to 2 weeks ago. I have no idea what happened but my knee really started bothering me. I think it's related to my IT band. The other day I went and had a sports massage and ultrasound with chiropractor adjustment. I'm desperate at this point and hoping I'll be back soon! I have been able to keep at it on the bike and have been swimming, but running has taken a back seat for a moment. I guess I'm okay with that since running is my strong point. I'm going to get some good riding in this weekend on the trainer, swim and get back to running next weekend hopefully. I have to be strong and refrain from  tempting myself to get outside this wknd for a run.

congrats on the huge improvement in swimming!!

Keep up the terrific work. I, like you, could swim only 50M max in august 2011 and have now done over one mile of continuous swimming...but that's not 2.4 Miles and not during a race and ...and...and...

Let's both keep training. Smile
