Master 1531 TORONTO | Subject: RE: Fred D and Jason's (Tri808) Half Ironman Mentor Group CLOSED! JethroTuller - 2013-05-13 11:25 AM In reading a lot of the earlier comments, I'm not too shy to admit I am easily the amateur of the group. Just think of how much you'll learn through our mistakes!! This past weekend I completed an International Distance Duathlon (6 mile run / 28 mile bike / 3 mile run), and it kicked my butt. I was the second to last finisher -- granted, there were only about 30 of us, and everyone else was geared out like a pro -- and I took 2 naps that afternoon I was so tired. Pretty sore today. I've been tri-ing for 5 years so such and I'm almost always last in my age group on the bike - or second to last. So long as you met your own personal goals and enjoy the process... who cares. Think of how much room for improvement you have!! Edited by kimmax 2013-05-13 12:08 PM |

74 is really warm for an OWS and really shouldn't affect you. 84 for the pool is too warm. The pool at both Y's I go to are 78 as a standard and if they're warmer I really notice it and it's too hot. Are you swimming with a wetsuit for you're OWS? If you are 74 should be perfect. It was wetsuit legal but for a super sprint and 200m I decided not to go with it. Actually I just ordered a wetsuit and it shows up this week, hopefully, it fits I was right in the middle of the chart specs. I can start using it but soon it won't be need for Texas summer races. Not seeing the bottom didn't bother me (I had practiced in the pool with closing my eyes whenever my face was in the water and only opening them when I came up to breathe.) I think another issue is I have been having trouble getting a deep breath at all with allergies and it was just a 'survival mode' kicking in. Next tri is a 600m OWS first weekend of June but it is in a subdivision lake so there should be minmal chop. I hope to get at least a couple OWS practice's in between now and then. This weekend is pretty much an off weekend training wise. I am voluntering at a bike aid station for Ironman Texas and then off to a woodturning retreat (hands on classes for my other hobby). Sunday is back to the retreat or the Ironman Expo, haven't decided. Might get some bike trainer time in on Sunday afternoon/evening. |

Expert 1121 Menomonee Falls, WI | Subject: RE: Fred D and Jason's (Tri808) Half Ironman Mentor Group CLOSED! Good day for me today. I am doing what I affectionately named a "a tripler" today. I swam 3000 yards this morning, ran for 30 minutes on my lunch hour and will be playing 9 holes of league golf this evening. I'll sleep like a baby tonight (especially after a beer or two after golf). Happy Monday to all! |

I am going to do a short 2-3 mile easy run tonight as I am in taper for this weekends Florida 70.3. couple easy swims and rides this week and that should about do it. Fred and Jason---since I likely won't get the requisite 50 or so milles in on the GP 4000s before this weekend, I am planning to hold off on putting them on. Good or bad idea? |

Leon 32 - 2013-05-13 12:07 PM I can't speak for anyone else, but personally I'd still put them on if for nothing else than to make sure I put them on right and didn't pinch/puncture the tube. That may be because I am a newb and don't have enough faith in my tire replacing abilities. Have done it a few times, but especially before a race I'd rather know for sure. I'd assume if you put the tire on and inflate the tube, even if you left it alone for a couple nights you'd know whether you were ok by if the tube stayed inflated.I am going to do a short 2-3 mile easy run tonight as I am in taper for this weekends Florida 70.3. couple easy swims and rides this week and that should about do it. The tires will still perform well, but the important thing is to make sure they are installed properly. It's not like the tires require ultra special care for installation, but it's always good to ride them for a bit just to make sure. |

Veteran 493 Chicago, Illinois | Subject: RE: Fred D and Jason's (Tri808) Half Ironman Mentor Group CLOSED! Fred D - 2013-05-13 11:34 AM Anybody else get any training in today? I called in sick today because I slept like crap last night because my son is kind of sick. Since I let my wife sleep last night while I held the baby, she let me nap this morning then took the kids out so I could go for a bike ride! There's this loop by my house that is almost exactly 2.25 miles. It's got some wind, but flat and boring otherwise. So I like to do intervals using it, 2.25 sprint, 2.25 easy. Like to see how fast I can do the loop. So far my fastest is 6:10 (that was today after making a few modifications to my setup, primarily in the aerobar placement). I'm running with a Gatorskin on the front and my stock michelin on the back, with butyl tubes, etc. Some day I'd like to get race kitted up and see what time I can get. Also I get my new seat this week, and I just bought a pd fast forward carbon seat post from another user on here, so looking forward to tinkering with that as well. Ultimately I'll be going for a fitting, of course.Anyways, so I did a interval bike ride this morning, and going to Masters tonight. Don't usually get two workouts in on a Monday. I've got a set of GP4000S and some latex tubes, just haven't put them on yet. The roads are not as smooth around here as I like so I'd rather save them for closer to race time. I'm hoping to go for a fitting next week.Latex tubes, Conti GP4000S and bike fit will add a lot of speed to your ride. |

Subject: RE: Fred D and Jason's (Tri808) Half Ironman Mentor Group CLOSED! I seem to have a minor sore throat brewing over the past few days. Didn't really bother me over the weekend despite a lot of training, but just lingering. Today should just be a swim. |

Regular 673 SF Bay area | Subject: RE: Fred D and Jason's (Tri808) Half Ironman Mentor Group CLOSED! Woke up today with no energy which confused me since yesterday was a rest day. Started my morning swim by pushing myself but ended up cutting it a bit short because I was indeed tired and my form started to suffer AND for no go reason my left hammie decided to announce itself. See how the rest of the day goes but may or may not do my run depending on that angry hamstring. No good reason for any of this that I can fathom. Just a little speedbump. |

Thought I had read somewhere that it was not the best idea to put brand new tires on without then "breaking" them in for 50 miles or so before a race. In addition, maybe the placebo affect will make me feel faster this weekend! |

Veteran 1677 Houston, Texas | Subject: RE: Fred D and Jason's (Tri808) Half Ironman Mentor Group CLOSED! I'm doing TrainerRoad's 8 Days in California tour/challenge. I did Stage 3 this morning (Stage 2 was rough, but Stage 3 was much better....maybe my legs just needed an opportunity to warm up to the idea of riding hard for eight days in a row!). Will be doing a master's swim session tonight (probably 2800ish meters) and getting up tomorrow morning to knock out Stage 4 of 8DC. |

Extreme Veteran 377 Ogallala, Nebraska | Subject: RE: Fred D and Jason's (Tri808) Half Ironman Mentor Group CLOSED! I have a long convoluted training question for the group: I'm doing bike ride across Nebraska June 2. About 463 miles in a week. I'm riding with my wife, who had a partial knee replacement in December and is really doing great. It was her idea to do the ride. Her average riding pace is about 6-7 mph slower than mine. My HIM which is my "A" race is August 4. The question is how should I approach the ride so I don't lose any training gains by riding at a slower pace? Should I spin in a higher cadence or pedal slow and hard? I plan to "mule" most of our supplies including 4 water bottles, tubes, snacks, etc., to add more weight to increase the effort. I'm not going to ride off without her but wanted to make the most of the week of bike riding. I'm not going to ride my tri bike since I wouldn't be able to ride with Sheri at her pace and it would be tough to stay in aero position. I have a road bike that I had planned to ride but am now re-thinking the mountain bike as a way to increase my workout and still keep the same speed as Sheri. Does anyone think spending that many miles on a mountain bike will have a detrimental impact on my road riding? Thanks, Steve |

How about fast tires and tubes on her bike, Gatorskins on yours? You wear baggy parachute-like clothes to catch some wind, she wears tight fitting ones. |

Easy to get a pinch flat if you use latex tubes but honestly this will present itself most times when you inflate the tires. Btw I would definitely fill the tires the am of the race if running latex tubes. I suggest 110 psi for most riders. Fred D - 2013-05-13 3:39 PM Another vote to put them on pronto. Will do! I don't know if this was mentioned already but carefully check your rim tape to make sure no spoke holes are exposed at all. After installing the tube but before inflating to full pressure, check to make sure there is no tube showing between the tire and the rim. If in doubt at all, redo it. The sound of a latex tube popping while you inflate to full pressure is one of the most gut wrenching sounds in the world. |
