Congrats on the great training week and the great ride on the 70.3 course. How'd the new bike work out?

The new bike is awesome!  And I'm finally getting back into long-ride shape, so I'm worthy of the bike

70.3 WC is being held in Chattanooga this year, and for the first time ever, they are running separate men's (Sunday) and women's (Saturday) races.  Based on my results from last year, I was invited to race the women's race this year.  I was hoping to qualify at Galveston 70.3 in April, but I was offered a guaranteed spot, so I am officially registered and going to Chattanooga in September!

This is awesome, Nicole!!!! Congratulations!!!

Good luck DQ!

Juan, you should be about 20 weeks out if I recall right? I think your race is a month or so before mine.

2400 yds with SMOG Squad tonight. He killed us! Will sleep well tonight.

Hey, everyone.  Wow - busy times on here.

@Dave - good luck at the job fair

@Gretchen - you're going to crush the HM this weekend, and good call on researching the nutrition options; for the HM, I just drink some Gatorade as I tolerate it well (I can't do solid food while running)

@Everyone - way to recover from debauchery over the weekend...wish I could say the same but I've got a couple more weeks before I'll be doing anything to help that out

So I'm at day 15 today - still have some discomfort from the surgery but the wound looks good.  I'm down on meds considerably...starting to wean off the Motrin a bit now, too.  I'm still having nerve pain on my left side at L4/L5 some calf cramping.  Showers are starting feel good again though it's still quite a process.

All-in-all I feel pretty good minus that nerve pain, which was the whole reason to have the surgery in the first place.  I've also read that it can take some for the nerve to heal up so I'll be patient, which I'm REALLY bad at.

Oh, and the weather is bat$hit crazy here - it was 73 degrees out yesterday and it's snowing right now.

Mike - way to stay with it.  Patience is not my strong suit either so I hear ya!

Same here with the weather - Snow/sleet/rain mix on Tuesday (classic New England weather), freezing rain Wednesday morning (including a 50 car pileup), 60+ degrees Wednesday afternoon, and snowing today with schools cancelled and places closed and everything else.

Mike--good to hear things are going well. I don't think triathletes are well known for their patience, but keep at it!

Weather here is stupid too. Tuesday--72F; Wednesday 30F, with sleet/snow; Thursday--12F----Race day (saturday), gonna be 65F. wtf mother nature?

What kind did you have? We want details!

Trillium - my brother and I made a special trip up on Saturday just for Super Bowl beers.

I had Secret Stairs stout, Double Dry Hopped Summer Street IPA, Congress Street IPA, and Heavy Mettle Double IPA.  All were delicious, the last two were just wow off the charts good.  Total New England style IPAs, in the same vein that started so long ago with Heady Topper and has just run on it's own tangent ever since especially with Tree House and Trillium.

If any of you ever find yourself anywhere near Canton, MA (about 20 mins southeast of Boston, on I95) - stop in there.  It's pretty much right off the highway, and the tasting room and beer sales are open most days 11am-10pm.  Awesome stuff.

OH. EMM. GEE!  I want!!!  Somehow, people are getting Trillium and Tree House to Houston, though I know that people are actually having to drive to the breweries and stand in line to get it locally, so I really have no idea how they're getting it here.  One of the local breweries tried to replicate a NEIPA recently....it was their first attempt and they said it was good, but they have ideas on how to make it better, so they'll be brewing it again soon.

I'm super jealous of your Super Bowl beers....and I thought we had some really good ones! [Share This: Mole by The Bruery, The Vine by Cascade Brewing, The Abyss (2015) by Deschutes, and He'Brew Jewbelation 18th Anniversary Ale by Shmaltz]

I'll be watching the Superbowl tonight and partaking in some beers.  I don't have a vested interest (Seahawks fan over here ), but figure I'll root against the Patriots.

Hope everyone else had a good weekend and enjoyed a couple beers!

I'm on Strava too - I think I'm just Jenn Hoy or JennVT, I can't remember. I'll keep an eye out for you.

I added you!  At least I hope it was you

Masters swim this morning. I only did 1900yds as my HM plan called for an off day today. It calls for two days totally off before the race, but I know myself--I'd go batsh!t crazy if I took two days off in a row. Coach got a bug in his ear today and wanted us to do 24x25 kick. Of course he did. I decided that wouldn't be a wise choice, so I pulled the set.

Yoga challenge is going well. I haven't missed a day yet. Mostly I'm doing the "post-run" stretches, which do seem to help.

Mike -- glad to hear you're making progress.  I think we all agree that patience is tough!  But try to be patient because it pays off in the end....nothing more annoying that pushing it too much early only to set yourself back longer.

Gretchen -- crazy weather!  Hopefully race day weather cooperates for you (65F is a touch warm, but it beats the hell out of the 86F we had yesterday!).  Wishing you all the best for your race....you've got this!

Glad you are continuing to feel better! Patience is a virtue I never quite got the hang of.

As for the weather, YES! I wore a dress with no jacket to work yesterday. Today I wore my winter coat and snow boots (even though the city didn't really get any snow). Ridiculous.

A touch warm?!

This has made me curious. What is everyone's ideal running temperature, assuming no precipitation and little wind?

My ideal running weather is right around 65F-70F. I love being able to run in shorts and a tank/tshirt. Also, my ears get cold really easily, which causes a headache, so it needs to be warm enough that I don't need to wear an ear warmer of some sort.

I slept in this morning and it was glorious. It was also much needed. I went to bed around 10pm and didn't set an alarm. Woke up at 7:10 and feel very rested.

I have football tonight and plan on running to and from my game (about a mile each way). I wanted to give my muscles a day of rest along with the extra sleep. It also makes playing outside in the cold more tolerable if I work up a sweat to get there.

So you northerners will probably laugh but I went out for a short 30 minute ride on my bike this morning and just about froze to death. It was about 43 degrees out. The biking aspect is probably the most foreign to me so I was very underprepared. Had Sweats/sweatshirt on but my hands turned to ice. I will be better prepared in the future.

6.4 miles 34:43

I only have a mountain bike and I don't think it's really a perfect fit for me. But I am going to stick it out until I can save up a bit of money and find something on craigslist.

Butt is sore, calves are feeling better.

I'm happy in the 55-65 range.  Anything much above 60 and I sweat too much (I sweat like crazy even in sub freezing - the sweatshirt I wore for my marathon in 29 degree weather was about 10 lbs soaked with sweat by the end).  Anything below 55 and it's too cold at a race start.

Well you guys can laugh at me because any time I've had a ride to do and it's in the low 40sF, I ride on the trainer.  And it's because of the hands and feet.  I haven't found appropriate gloves yet and I don't own shoe covers.  I've got thermal tights and a long sleeve jersey and a vest and a shell, but those parts sweat while the fingers and toes freeze and make me miserable.

Ideal Weather:

I'm talking training here, where I don't have to stand around and wait for someone to tell me to go!

Running: 35-55F, no wind (obvs!)

Biking: I'm a total wimp and won't ride if it is <60F. It can go up from there to 110F and I have no worries, but I have no cold weather riding gear and the wind just cuts through me and chills me to the bone.

I once did an early season tri with a pool swim (water temp 86F) and then an outdoor ride. Outdoor temp was 42F at race start. I thought I was going to freeze to death riding my bike after that swim. It was the most miserable race I've ever done.

I'm pretty flexible when it comes to running temps - I've had race success even in some pretty cold/windy conditions.  I think for a shorter race I like it a little warmer, so for a 5K I'd like 60 or so which would allow me to do the tank top and shorts thing.

Probably around 60-70F for me for running, and prefer colder than warmer outside those ranges. You can always put more clothes on if it gets cold.

On the bike, temperature doesn't bother me too much, but I hate riding on rainy days. rain = run day for me. (unless I have to)

Life's been getting in the way a bit again this week for workouts.

I've mainly managed to get it done, but I am 2 swims short so far. So I'm going to look to make my weekend even bigger and tap a swim onto the weekend... unless I can sneak out for a lunch time swim today, which is doubtful.

Highlight of the week so far was last nights bike. I'd had a crappy day and was a bit grumpy when I got home, so took it out on the bike. Absolutely thrashed the poor thing. But had a blast, and a good higher effort workout to boot... this really is the best therapy

Nicole: Congratulations on qualifying for the worlds! That's a level I can only dream of.

DQ: Good luck for your job fair

Gretchen: Good luck for your HM this weekend. You're going to own it.

Mike: good to hear that the recovery is going well.

Way to finish up strong! How fast are we going in the pool these days?

Not too bad, swimming each 100m between 2 and 2.06, my main problem is that I am skipping 1 out of 2 weekly swims...need to get in the water at least twice per week!
