In fact, it was the main portion of the eulogy I gave at his funeral. I'm cutting/pasting the story here... Anyone who knows me knows I don't do heat. The longer I live in WA, the truer this becomes. =========================================== It was June 28th in Arizona, and Howard invited me for “about a 5-mile run.” It was 90 degrees at 6:45 in the morning when we hit the trails. Trusting that we really were only going to run about 5 miles, I didn’t bring any water. As we walked to our starting spot, Howard told me about the times that he fished water bottles out of garbage cans on his runs. This should have been my clue to turn around and quit while I was ahead. Figuring I could survive for the 45 minutes I was planning on running, I willingly went along. An hour later, Howard announced that we’d arrived at this cool rock formation that he wanted to show me. Great!! That means this run is done, right?! WRONG!! “OK!” He said, “Let’s head back. I think we go this way… I’m not entirely sure… awww well, let’s give it a try.” For the next hour I cursed Howard for bringing me out into the middle of the desert in the middle of the summer, without any water. I was sure I was going to get heat stroke, or worse. How could I have been so stupid to trust him? How many times had Dave and Howard gone out for “a short run,” only to return more than two hours later (while everyone at home was waiting for them so we could go out for breakfast)? When would I learn??!! But that was how Howard lived… you take what comes, you roll with it, you make the best of it, and you come out just fine on the other side. =================================== I remember returning from that run totally swollen (my hands swelled up huge during the run). I just sat in the pool for a LONG time and I was spent, totally spent, for about 2 days after that. Fortunately there were lots of mountain bikers out where we were -- had I been in true dire straits we could have gotten water or help. But still! I never let him hear the end of that one... awesome. we curse em'. but then cherish the things we learn from em'. Pain and the struggle are only temporary. Memories are forever. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() fattyfatfat - 2010-07-21 11:28 AM heat and humidity. two different animals. a monster when combined. the one thing people always tend to lose focus on (ha!) is the mental game. look at all the threads and people's logs talking about it. "what do i do." "i hate it." "when will it end." yeah, my logs to. LISTEN to your body. don't even think of trying to maintain a normal pace for your workout or you will get crushed. understand this and accept it, know that when things start to cool down you WILL see results. in the several years i've been running in it down here i've never once heard anyone ever say they are used to it. I have held off chiming in on this mainly because this might sound very strange...but it does go to the mental aspect John mentions. Assuming you are doing all the right things physically to safely replenish the fluids and electrolytes, dealing with the heat/humidity is very much a mental thing. I have come to 'make it my friend' meaning I do not fight it nor curse it. I just enjoy that I am able to do what I can do and my body is dealing with it as it is supposed to by sweating, etc. I know I look really red, sweaty, gross, whatever....but I see it as a good thing. Its amazing how much more fun a run or bike ride in the heat is once you accept it is what it is, and I rather be doing what I am doing vs. not being able to do it. And my body is dealing with it as it is supposed too as long as I supply the supplements it needs to deal with the elements. |

On a deserted island: 1.)What's the one cd you would take with you? Totally would go with the cop-out answer of taking my ipod. It would be loaded with tons of Grateful Dead, Foo Fighters, DMB, old Madonna, Beatles, classical music, soundtrack from Rent, and two key albums would be Paul Simon's Graceland and 10,000 Maniacs' In My Tribe. 2.)What is the one type of food you would take with you? Thanksgiving dinner. 3.)What is the one material item you would bring (aside from family)? Laptop w/solar battery & satellite modem (or, if they don't fall under "family," my dogs -- my current one and the three before him) |

I'M HUNGRY AGAIN!!!!!! Where's the protein in that meal????? stave off hunger by including it!!!! Tracy, I totally agree! I have been using one scoop of whey protein in my oatmeal...it's supposed to be 17g of protein which really staves off the hunger and gives you lots of energy until your next meal. It's supposed to be tasteless, but the one I got has a sort of vanilla flavor which is great! I shake it up with a little rice dream first so it doesn't chunk up in the hot oatmeal, but highly recommend it especially before long workouts. (which reminds me, i forgot to bring it with me for my pre-race breakfast, and was bummed) Kim |
