Ten minutes ago, I found out yet another friend of ours has cancer; pancreatic and liver.  Basically given 2 months to live.  His girlfriend just got over  breast cancer.  While he is in his 60s he is still extremely active and is a regular hunter with Paul (the man).   This disease has taken so many people close to me and now another one surfaces....sorry to be a downer, but it is really a bad day.

What is everyone's off-season plans?

I have my last tri 10/10, an Olympic. I am glad I made the decsion to wait until next year to do a HIM. I have a tentative plan to run a 1/2 marathon 11/1. Then it is winter training time. I will be riding the CT a LOT, and running as much as I can. I will also go back to my weekly ice hockey (Tracy what night and time is Doug palying now at the the Rec Zone?).

I am slowly researching off season training plans now.

Very sorry to hear this Suzy. We lost my wife's uncle Sam to bladder cancer about 8 years ago. He was from South America, but stayed with us in Northern VA while he recieved treatment at Johns Hopkins. Unfortunately he lost his battle. His is missed to this day as he was a very warm individual and a wise man.

On a weird note, my first tri was the GAry Kirby Tri, about 4 miles from my house. His soneand family organize it. He died from cancer a few years ago. His doctors race now. Turns out that he died of bladder cancer too. His doctor said that he believes that they are on the cusp of making real strides into treating this type of cancer and expects breakthroughs throughout the next decade.

So there is hope, and the organizations supported by these triathlons can really make a difference!

Trying to take my mind off things, I am sitting with a '10 calendar and filling in my races (using pencil for now).  This will be the first year since '03 that I won't be doing 1-2 marathons so no big concentration on a build up during January-March. Weird, but nice.  I really don't think I will be doing any major racing after the September HIM, a couple of bike events for fun and one Turkey Trot!

So far for '10, I have:

1/2 marathon: March (maybe Miami 7th or Sarasota 15th)
Lonestar Oly:April 25th
20K Run: May 2nd
20m Run: May 20th
High Cliff HIM: June 21st
Phillips Sprint: July (total for fun in Northern WI)
Chisago or Racine HIM: July 26th
Dairlyland Dare 100K: August
IM WI: September

I hope to throw in a running event or two for fun, but hopefully I can just slide those into the plan later.

Anyone who wants to join me in WI in the summer is more than welcome......

I really hate to hear that Suzy.  Cancer is rough on family and friends as we watch the person fade away.

Edit: That sounds bad...it's horrible for the patient.  But I always have a lot of sympathy for the family and friends

I have a half-mary Sept 26 then it's simply maintenance mode.
Probably do Power 90 then follow it with a round of P 90X.  I'll be swapping out some cardio days of both for time on the trainer and running.
Swimming is the hard part - only one good place but a horrible schedule.

Last year my coldest run was 13F (I think, maybe 15) - weather permitting I hope to beat that.
Some of my running will be speed work - maybe I can become a glacier rather than an ice cap.

That sucks - don't think it can be said enough.  My family's prayers will be with him.  Methinks I need to do a cancer benefit ride like Birdy did- its not much, but it is something.

Suzy that's horrible news, I'm so sorry for you and his family.  My dad died 3 yrs ago from colon cancer, he initially was given a few months but lived and fought for over 2 yrs.  there is not a day i don't think about what he went through..  My parents were very lucky they had a great support group, their friends spent so much time with them playing bridge or just talking to them.  I don't know how my family would have gotten through that time without them.

I totally agree with you it's extremely bad for both.  I found out a little over a month ago my family friend's mom has bone cancer that spread to the brain.  She now doesn't recognize anyone.  I can't imagine how she feels going through this not knowing anyone and how the husband and children feel when she doesn't recognize them.

So I am trying to get myself and my friend motivated for the tri season next year.  We did our first tri together this year.  I went 1:30 and he went 2:00.  He rode his mountain bike and has since purchased a road bike, so he will shave a significant amount of time next year.  My idea is that nothing motivates us more than fear and humiliation (we are highschool friends and always rag on eachother).  With that in mind, I am proposing that we set a time difference, say 15 minutes.  If I beat him by more than 15 minutes I win and if I don't he wins.  The catch is that who ever loses has to wear this in the next race: http://www.probikekit.com/display.php?code=C0023

The idea is we would each buy the outfit now and having to look at the speedo every day over the off season and seeing it will help us stay motivated.  So what do you guys think?  Not sure if I can talk him into it, but I am trying.  Do you have any other ideas?

I don't get it.  What is the humiliation factor here?  I mean, I just bought a similar mankini type outfit for my upcoming race...but with a different design of course.

seriously.  for 20 pounds i'll wear that!  and i'll buy it 2 size's to small.  and no manscaping!

yeah here's the best idea.  just go ahead and race.  the MG boys will decide what happens to the loser.  ha.  have that hanging over your head, that 5 years to Kona post on ST (awesome post btw) will be 1 year to Kona because you will not want to lose.
