I just realized I have no idea how old you are Ben

Yes, that one is mine (so should help with the age Wink . The race tends to draw some fast people, but doesn't have a lot of depth. One year had a former pro and two IM amateur champs in it. Other places do get something, but can't remember what. Brother got 2nd in his age-group and his wife was 3rd in hers. Last year was a functional bobble-head trophy. It looked like a statue with the metallic coating, but the head really does work like a normal one. Has to be one of the coolest things I've won.

At work and I so cant be bothered today. Thought that I would come and hang out here and then remembered because of the time difference that you are all sleeping.

I hope that you have a wonderful Monday morning when you wake up.

(Also can someone tell me why when I am on my ipad the picture that I posted yesterday is up the right way, but on my PC today it is up side down? Whats the go with that?)

so after my awesome lesson with Coach Piglet Mark yesterday I decided more practice was in order.  I am not ready for the road yet - I have to master the art of stopping so today I just went up and down the footpath braking, unclipping and trying not to fall into people's front yards.  Tick that box - a couple of wobbly stops.  But I rescued it and that's the main thing.

It is not a natural instinct for me yet and Mark says that's what I need to aim for, like driving a car, you don't think depress clutch ease up on the gas change gear brake, you just do it.   That's what I need to be like on my bike stopping.  I have to talk through it, relax, brake, unclip come forward stop.  The unclipping you'll be pleased to know isn't an issue it's the stop come forward without losing my balance.  It's just an oxymoron to me that I have to put my weight in my right foot but reach down and lean to the left.  But it's getting better.  Phew.

Anyway I think if I do that every day up and down the footpath I will gain confidence enough to get me on the road again without stopping by just reaching down with both feet - effective as that may be!

So Manatees - it's going to be an early morning thing I'm just going to do half an hour of that.  I have another session with Mark next Saturday so that should do it.

My confidence though boosted is still shaky.  I wish I could keep Mark in my pocket!

I suppose the only thing that I need to focus on is it's not that important in a race.  I only have to probably stop once in a HIM at the end.  And in the Full - well that's 8 months away I'm sure I'll be fine by then, no doubt an expert.  And again probably need to only stop two or three times.  And I'll be peeing on the bike!

Thanks for bearing with me Manatees.  I really am a klutz.

After getting this, it's funny going back to flat pedals and trying to figure them out again. I still instinctively "clip out".

Perfect timing I tuned into a podcast this morning with an interview with Grant Peterson - owner of Rivendell Bicycles author of the book Just Ride.

He was talking about how unnecessary all the 'gear' is  - tri bikes, carbon fiber, lycra, clip in shoes etc.  He said unless you have the engine of Lance Armstrong or other such folk - it's all not strictly necessary!  - I take comfort from that.

However I am a fan of all the gear and no idea, so i shall continue!

Not so sure I agree with that all together.  If the gear was not necessary, why not just ride a mountain bike in races?  Because riding a 30 lb monster with fat knobby tires would be a hell of a lot harder than riding a nice, lightweight, carbon fiber tri bike.  No lycra - sure, just where swim trunks.  No clip ins - not nearly as efficient and you will work way harder (no matter what your speed is).

Does 1 lb difference in total bike weight or a few grams here or there matter much - not for the average Joe.  Does a set of zipps versus an entry level pair of racing wheels with bladed spokes make much of a difference - I doubt it.  If that's all he is saying, I totally agree.

Maybe I just didn't understand your summary of what he was saying, but if I did - I think that's BS to say that.

No his take on it was - that so many ordinary people won't ride a bike because they have been intimidated by all the gear.  He said that if you're on a 16lb bike and weighing 200lbs - won't make a jot of difference!  Funny coz Vinnie the ultra cyclist rides a steel bike coz he says when you're riding 500mile races comfort is way more important than speed, zipp wheels etc.  He gets his clients to ride his bike and they call it the 'couch' coz it's so comfortable!

His view is if you're gonna be on there a long time, comfort will outweigh the benefits of speed.

That's all.  For me - a very everyday Jo(e) this is very true.

What I see in things like this isn't that gear doesn't matter, but rather they are trying to put the emphasis back on rider development, where it should be. Looking at the speeds of a typical local race, I could still put up a rather strong bike split on my mountain bike. And it also goes along those lines with the comfort, or fit. The bike has to work for the individual rider. It does not do any good if the position can not be held for the duration of the ride. It's also not good if the position makes one sore or squirm about some when riding it.  None of these things can really be directly seen that well, so newer or less experienced may focus on what they can actually see. And that would be the very visually catching aero stuff. Those things help, but the heart of a strong rider is the engine and their ability to utilize it.

I ended up doing that TT this weekend.  It was fun.  I'd like to do another one fresh sometime.  They also have a local 10 miler (instead of a 20).  Really kinda dig the TT format. I could see getting into those, though I do not like getting my azz handed to me so readily.  Fach.

RR is up http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=496453&posts=1&page=1

Nice job going for it there! I realized Friday that not everyone would start picking it back up within a couple days of an HIM like I would (communications black-out for several reasons for me), and would have suggested to go on a light ride before the race for exactly what you were thinking. Thursday or Friday would have been best for a generally light ride. And with a TT coming up in a couple days I would have tried a steady buildup of like 15 minutes or so in there. Or done it as a series of say 3-5 minute intervals, starting with just a bit over easy on the first and making each one a bit harder than the last. Or maybe some combination of both. That helps to both work out the garbage feeling from the previous big event and to also help gauge what I might be ready for. On those, I don't necessarily look at all of them, but more the later parts to see how well I was operating at a harder effort and if it would be good enough for the upcoming event. Certainly not an optimal lead in, but could I get going well enough to expect a reasonable ride? Then probably expect to have to work some things out again on race morning, but hopefully not as much.

Exactly!  How many times have you seen people with tri bikes that cannot stay in aero?  What's the point of that?

Stacey - Sorry that there are no puppies in your immediate future.  That's a bummer :-(

Jen - Bad RDs SUCK!  Happy 420 to you thought ;-)  I'm with Switch, frame the bib!

For those of you lamenting the fact that it's Monday (as I am), if it makes you feel any better (or at least you can laugh at me) I almost didn’t make it in to work today as my evil husband decided to make something ridiculous like 17 alarm chili last night “just to use up all the dried jalapenos and hot peppers we’ve got lying around”.

All I have to say is that food shouldn’t hurt going in or going out.  Yes, you can now starting singing Johnny Cash ‘Burnin’ Ring of Fire’ in your head for your own amusement.

It's 7 months away, and I can drop to the HM if I'm really not ready. But 7mo should leave me no excuses besides injury.

Did long weekend ride with DH...60miles. Saw our first baby rattlers (road kill Frown). Tried a Stinger gel- the fruit punch is waaaaaaay too sweet for me,  and ate 1/2 Stinger waffles-vanilla and chocolate are yummy!

I can definitely tell I'm not getting the good sleep I need (7+ hour girl), but still working on getting baby to stay in her bed. The last 30-40min the heat (100*) and tiredness hit.

But still a good "date" with DH Laughing
