Ironman training is like: when you are in college and love to drink say vodka and cranberry juice. One day you go to a party and drink way to much, you puke puke puke and can't drink vodka and cranberry again for years. I'm about to puke puke puke.

Almost to the taper.

GORGEOUS day on the Moo bike course today.  Still some loose gravel here and there on the roads that will hopefully be swept the day before the race, and hopefully the county takes care of that small construction at Shady Lane and MidTown Rd.

running2far - 2009-08-18 10:53 AM I'm running a 50/34 and 12-25 ------- As Dumpster said, they don't give you points for riding tougher gears. I'll be hitting the monona terrace around 5:50 so I don't suck :-) not super fast either. I'm able to keep watts below 280 with this set up. The solution is get lighter (hard to do at this stage of the game) or get more gears.

280 Average over 112?

280 is his ceiling, not his average.  Big difference.

Whew!! Thanks for clearing that up Chris!

I learned my lesson in 07 riding a 11-23 out there. Th efirst loop was fine but I would have sold my left nut for a 25 or 27 on the second loop on the 2 steep climbs. This year I plan on a 12-25 but may just buy a 12-27 as well.

Sounds like everyone is getting some good training in! I spent the weekend upstate doing my peak brick workout, 116/10, and ended up logging over 200 miles on the bike over the weekend. It was really fun and I finally feel ready. I haven't had a chance to check out the athlete guide yet since I've been out of town.

One more big week then it's taper time. I laughed when I saw my first week of taper schedule, I won't know what to do with all that free time!

This week will be my big week, according to my coach, and then the taper starts. I think I have a 3 hour run coming and a 100+ bike this weekend. We may try and do 3 loops of the course if we feel up to it.

What's the deal with the meal tickets? Do they keep a list of how many tickets we bought, or do they mail us, or give us actual tickets at check-in?

Also, since I got an extra meal ticket for my wife, will she be able to stick around for the meeting, or will I need to send her off?

Thanks.

I'm sure they have a specific allocated number reserved to account for seating.

If you are able to purchase a ticket for your wife, she can stay after the dinner for the meeting.

Welcome Dinner and Awards Banquet

Each athlete will receive complimentary entry into the Welcome Dinner (Friday, September 11 at 5:30 p.m.) and Awards Banquet (Monday, September 14 at 11:30 a.m.). Your athlete wristband provides you with access to these two functions. Please do not remove the wristband prior to the functions or you will be denied entry. Banquet tickets are available for purchase on-site at the banquet. We recommend arriving early, as the banquets typically sell out.
"

I believe the ticket was in the packet pickup or goody bag.

Thank you. I preordered, so she's in (ordered 2 extras in fact). Glad she'll probably be able to stay for the meeting. She wants to feel informed. On that, I may have an extra if anyone needs it. Message me.

katherinel - 2009-08-21 1:15 PM ok, you guys.  I tried to buy a 11-28 Dura Ace at the local bike shops around here....and the price 469.00 Canadian...so about 440.00 US...I could have gone Ultegra but I found a 11-28 DuraAce online for 190.00 Canadian, only about 30 bucks more than an Ultegra.  NOw I have a problem....since I am not buying the part through the local shop, can I still get them to put it on for me?  How hard is it to change a cassette myself?

That price seems pretty high.

Should be no more than USD$250 for a DA cassette.

http://www.trisports.com/shul10ca.html  ( use your BT discount to drop that even more ).  Ultegra 10spd 12-27 for $100USD.

Bring your rear wheel, the new cassette, smile nicely at the mechanic, buy a couple tubes, and they'll probably swap cassettes no problem.

Following up on this a bit further.

There *is* a DA 11-28 cassette (I thought you had a typo).  It is brand spanking new for the 7900 series, and does not look like it's "backwards" compatible with older DA/Ultegra drivetrains (if you believe Shimano).  There's a compatibility chart here:

http://lib.store.yahoo.net/lib/trisports/DA7900Compatibility.pdf

It's also probably not a very common cassette, hence the much higher price.  The 12-27 is well established and fairly popular and should be much more readily available for a decent price ( see the link above for one that is ~USD$100 ).

I would suggest that unless you are dead-set on having a 28 tooth rear cassette, that a 27 tooth will do just fine (and be considerably cheaper).

Look for a SRAM 11/28. That's what I'm running and it cost only... $80 I think? And the bike shop put it on for me for $10... but they taught me how to do it myself. I can switch it out no problem now.

It was 72.5 this past Saturday morning. I doubt it's changed much since.

I worked registration last year and the ticket is given at packet pickup.

After blowing off training last night for a date (hey, I'm human), I woke up this morning thinking the extra rest day would have me all set to go for a big training day. I couldn't have been more wrong. My nagging, lingering PF from last year crept back up and overnight turned into hideous pain that I could feel just lying in bed. I couldn't even step on my foot and spent all morning icing, stretching and rolling it until finally I just started my planned training and took it easy. After 1.5 hours on the bike it loosened up a bit so I braved my 15 mile run. I made it and was relatively pain free but now I'm really worried about this being a problem so close to the race. Frustrating! I'm having ART tomorrow and am hoping to get a couple more sessions in next week. Off to ice some more...
