I believe that anyone who has done Silverman will be alright at St. George.

Nice... since I have done Silverman 3 times.

Good to know.  I decided not to ride the IMSG course...  Just play it by ear.

I have my nutrition plan dialed in.  Does this sound too crazy?

I drink a bottle of GE or Infinit an hour and eat a Baby Ruth candy bar every two to three hours.  For some reason, that feels good to me...

Baby Ruth, the next Ironman sponsor????

Not too appealing to me (peanut allergy).

After Vineman, I vote for Mini-Oreos as a sponsor, though...

Ditto.  We'll drive the course on Thursday before the race.  Don't have the time or money to spend an additional weekend in Utah.  The course is what it is and my training is what it is.  Driving the course will tell me what I need to know tactically and technically.

speaking of alergies.  I had something the other night that was scary...  I went to bed with an itchy throat and stuffed up nose and 'tingly' lips.  I woke up a couple hours later and it looked like Mike Tyson went to work on my face.  It was all swollen up.  My wife came home after a night of working and my face scared her half to death (more than usual )

Yep.  Plus there is going to be a lot of down time on Thursday and Friday.  A good 60-70 mile road trip would be nice.  (no need to drive the loop twice).

Ditto,  I will drive the course on Thursday before the race.  Time and Finances did not allow me to make a trip to train on the course.  It is what it is and I did the best I could on my training based on what I had to work with.  I will go and try to race smart and see how things turn out.  Just over 25 days to go!!!

I sort of feel lazy since I can drive there.  BUT as the days approached that I wanted to go up, I started thinking "two hours up, ride for 6-7, two hours back, plus bike packing and unpacking, maybe a short run brick..."

I just didn't want to have a 12 hour day training (training relate)...

Was going to preview the course in February, but really didn't have the volume or money to do it.

Not going to pre ride it, on the fence about driving it.  I see the elevation profiles, the rides I do are similiar, and we know about the wind, you're not going to remember pothole on mile 95, so really, what is the reason to drive it.

Am I the only one who gets an extra burst of energy and excitement from a new course never seen or ridden before?

Hey Jim... I drove up to Vegas to pre-ride the Silverman course twice. Didn't go into Vegas either... just camped at Lake Mead.

One 112 mile bike and a 20 mile run to go and then it is taper time.  It can't come quick enough.

Road closure and spectator transpo info was posted on the IMSG site today.  Looks like we'll get plenty of room on 18, and 91.

Finally, some details in there on race morning transport to the swim...like the FAQ suggested, shuttle is from the Fairgrounds, quite a ways east of town on Hwy 9, running between 5:30 and 6:40 am.  No "personal vehicles" allowed at the swim venue.

Its about 12 miles from the finish to the shuttle location. Map between the two. I am staying about 1/4 mile from the Finish and was hoping the shuttles would be close to there, guess not. Now I have to plan on the family getting me over to the shuttle pickup and them getting back. More fun. I guess they will have to get up at the @ss-crack of dawn with me afterall.

We're staying like 2 1/2 blocks from the finish.  I've been telling my wife that I'm okay with self-driving my car to the shuttle (I like to arrive early for races) and letting her and my dad sleep in (a little) and use his rental car to come out for the swim start closer to 7am.  But she seems intent on driving me to the fairgrounds and then hanging out at the swim start...for an hour or more.

Another Logistical Question for the experienced IMers.

1)  Should we bring our own bike pump to T1 the morning of the race to top off the tires, , and if so, how do we get it back?  Are the personal bags big enough to hold them?  Or, do you just inflate the tires when you drop the bike off and hope that the pressure holds?

2)  I suspect it's still chilly when the bike leg starts - do you plan on wearing arm warmers or another layer and peeling it at some point?  Or do you put up with some chill on the bike until it warms up?

3)  I read someone post that they plan to put a tech shirt in their special needs run bag for use after the sun sets.  If I'm not mistaken, we don't get those special needs bags back after the race - or do we?  Should we assume that anything we put in the SN bags that isn't used gets trashed?

4) I know there are rules regarding nudity and public decency (public urination and so forth) on the course.  What about spontaneous bouts of turrets syndrome?  Stuff like, "F*$K YOU HILL!!" being shouted randomly?

I'm going to have arm warmers available if the forecast is for cold AM temps.  Won't wear them unless it's around 50F or below at bike start.  If the forecast is especially nasty, I'll have toe covers as well.  Had both for Vineman (full and 70.3) where it was a little chilly at the bike start, but didn't use them.

Having worked bike SN at IMAZ, I can tell you that the bags do get packed up at the end of the day and you can recover your bag if you want.  However, the repacking job was none too careful, so be prepared for spillage, breakage, whatever.

As an aside, there were some really stupid SN bag packing jobs we had to deal with that were just begging to blow away in the wind or had obvious breakables or weren't securely closed.  Make it easy on the volunteers, guys...you'll have a better chance of getting what you need in a timely manner on the course.

Just butting my nose in where it doesn't belong, but not all IM courses give you your SN bags back.  IMAZ does, IMC doesn't (or so I am told).   Check the athlete's guide for your race

SPECIAL NEEDS: Unless you have some special concoction you need... 1 or 2 tubes and 1 or 2 CO2.

You should have your system prepared for what they have on the course or so that your stomach will handle any different drinks/gels, etc. You never know what will happen... weather, etc. and your best bet is always being able to refuel with what they supply you with.

Just my 2 cents on SPECIAL NEEDS

You also then don't need to worry about picking up your special needs bag.

Definitely my take on SN as well...didn't even have a bike SN bag at Vineman.  Carried what I needed on the bike or picked up at aid stations.  I did have some run SN supplies there (in transition, which served as the run SN stop at VM), but just to take care of my hamstring injury if it blew up on me (which it did)...basically just extra athletic tape to re-wrap my thigh...otherwise probably wouldn't have had anything stashed on the run, either

(If you're expecting to be on the run course after dark, though, not a bad idea to have a windbreaker or the like at run SN.)

This may be stupid question, but what about sun screen on the run? Do they have it at the aide stations?  I will carry it on the bike, but I am planning on living off the run course.  I hate running with stuff in pockets and belts.

At IM Cozumel (also a new IM) it took 5 minutes for them to find some people's SN bags. It didn't help that the volunteers only spoke Spanish and a lot of racers only spoke English - but in short, being self-sufficient can definitely pay off!

Get this for before the race...

Then if needed, they will have volunteers slathering sunscreen on when you leave the T2 tent.

They will have people in T1 and T2 with sun screen lotion. They will put it on your shoulders and face. I would apply it in the morning and then let me put some extra lotion on your shoulders and face.

Question for the experienced IM'ers:

Can you get help at the aid stations?  If I need a leg rubbed in T2 or wrapped, is that outside the parameters?  Can a volunteer massage or wrap an ankle at an aid station?
