In May I will...

Bike 600 miles

Run 125 miles

and swim 10 times.

Sadly, the swim will be the tough one.

May's totals:
Bike:39h 04m 38s  - 616.45 Mi
Run:16h 51m 06s  - 116.9 Mi
Swim:5h 28m 38s  - 15100 M

Well,  mixed results for me.  I caught a chest cold the last few days of the month and I didn't get my last few workouts in.  Hopefully, I'll get rid of this crud before my HIM Saturday.

For June I need more quality swims.

My goals were 450 miles biking, 100 miles running and 2 swims per week.

Bike:36h 25m 55s  - 538.33 Mi
Run:18h 53m 49s  - 111.38 Mi
Swim:7h 31m  - 23219.3 Yd

I did great on the bike and run but fell down on the swim in a big way.  I am seriously undertrained for the 5K swim at the endd of the month - must get my self in gear.

I wouldn't sweat it - everyone has different finishing goals.

For example, I'm trying just to finish.  No, really.  Finish.

FYI, I got my case of 12 Ironman Perform in the mail today.  I thought we might get lucky and get 24 but I will take what I can get.

How do u like it?

May's totals:

Bike: 19h 31m 25s - 367.52 Mi
Run: 8h 40m 49s - 61.82 Mi
Swim: 8h 57m 53s - 26900 M

A lot lighter than what I wanted, but I am sticking with my plan. For June I know the volume will be way up. Hoping to finally break 100 miles of running, and possibly 550 of biking.

Its getting close guys. How is everyone feeling?

May's totals:
Bike:10h 29m 07s  - 178.05 Mi
Run:7h 35m 53s  - 40.73 Mi
Swim:5h 06m 13s  - 16000 M
Strength:2h 40m

That was much lower than planned.  Had some life issues get in the way (wife out of town for 2 weeks for work, unplanned; mom in the hospital for a week w/broken pelvis) that really impeded training.  I feel like I'm back on the horse now, though.  A little behind but still in the game.  I may have to adjust my goals for the race but that's okay.  As long as I finish...

June Goals:
S: 13K
B: 510
R: 110

I may slip a little on the swim, if the wife has to travel again this month, which is looking likely, but I'll make sure to get in as much as possible.  I really want to make sure that I hit the bike and run totals as those are more critical for me.

I"m in a slump too...did my first "long" run of the year (7.6 miles) and after sitting in the car, limped from my hip locking up.  Stupid unstable hip.

Anyone else looking forward to the march of death?  :P

Not real happy with how things are going.  My run is getting slower. Not good for a guy who already plods along at a slow pace.  May summary below:

    May Goals        Actuals

S:  28000 M         25197.16 M - 9h 31m
B:  425 Mi            402.50 Mi - 23h 08m 10s
R:  90 Mi              71.11 Mi - 10h 50m 40s

I know I missed at least two run workouts and I think a swim. I raced yesterday so that messed with my weekend long run.

For the most part I am sticking to my plan though.

Can't believe the race is now 3 months out.  The way I ran yesterday, I am really worried.  I wish I were feeling excited, up, and peppy, but I am not.  I am feeling a little down and out.

I enjoy reading others' posts.  Keep'em coming!

Brian

As this is my first IM training, I'm unknown on what to expect, but I find myself very up and down regarding my training.  Sometimes I'm fired up and highly positive on the course I'm on and others I find myself highly doubting myself (which is an unusual trait for me).

karen26.2 - 2010-05-01 2:53 PM Here's what I have planned for May -

Monthly totals:
S:  36000.00 Yd - 12h 00m
B:  475.00 Mi - 30h 45m
R:  105.00 Mi - 19h 30m

May's totals:
Bike:39h 48m 47s  - 633.27 Mi
Run:20h 59m 35s  - 118.33 Mi
Swim:12h 06m 04s  - 33330.62 Yd

I missed a couple of swim workouts, and as much as I wanted to get in the neighborhood pool yesterday to make up the missed yards, it just didn't happen.

Run was right on, and thanks again to Mrs. Brown Dog - I exceeded the bike. =)

I'm feeling the same way.  Some days I think "hey, this is possible", other days "what in the world was I thinking???"

I assume/hope that's the norm for IM training.

It's very funny, because I think this is totally do-able for you.  I am more worried about myself than I am about you.  And you blew the bike goal away last month!  Whoo!

I'm feeling the same way as well . . . I'm a little freaked out about the race and hate the days I feel like I'm not going to get through it and how crazy I am for challenging myself to this wondering if I am even ready for it. ugh - I hope its normal for IM training lol!!!

Run:7h 46m 41s  - 49.86 Mi
Swim:4h 29m 59s  - 8400 Yd

Not where I though I would be but it works . . . I'm hoping to get more running and swimming in. I feel comfortable on the bike and will test the waters with it this weekend - heading out to Tahoe on Thursday for the AMBBR on Sunday. Scheduled 100 miles followed by a 3mile run / longest brick ever for me and well kind of my first brick workout of the year officially since I have not been able to run much. Coach says I'm ready and wants me to really focus on nutrition - that is where i'm stuggling right now

A few of us are taking our wet suite also and may do a swim in the lake haha - its going to be FREEZING!!!!

Happy Training for June everyone!!!

I had an unusual amount of personal travel this month and then week of heavy work impact that got in the way of IM training...a lot; but now that I compare my totals with others I don't feel quite so bad, in fact I'm doing much better than I thought I was.  For the past few weeks I did a LOT of adjusting and moving things around and kept thinking that I was missing a lot, but it looks better than I thought.  I'm doing the BT Beginner 20 week plan so I'm not really sure how my totals stack up to where I should be with the plan, and I'm really not so obsessed that I'm going to take the time to compare, since I know that I've done the best I could possibly do given the circumstances with my time availability.

Just purchased a new bike last week (Specialized Transition Comp), so I hope to see my long rides increase, I really want to get up in the 5-6 hour range with a brick so I can really experiment with my nutrition (especially now that I know about the Powerade drink decision).

I reached an epiphany of sorts last week and asked my swim coach to work more with me on form/body position.  I know I'm a leg dragger and felt that I had improved as much as I could and started to work on longer distances, but I realized that I was making a mistake by not correcting my form as much as I could.  I know I could force myself through the distances, but would suffer on the bike and run if I don't improve to the point where I'm more efficient.  I know I'll never be fast, but since this is an ultra-distance race I realized that I needed to find the fine-line between speed, comfort, and efficiency.  So I may see my swim distances lag over the next few weeks, but I think this is an important decision.

With that being said, the reason for my travels?  Last weekend drove 12 hours to NOLA to be with my oldest daughter when she graduated from Medical School.  This weekend, flew out to Colorado to run the Bolder Boulder.  Both great experiences, on the plane wi-fi  now and can't wait to hit the pool at 6 tomorrow morning, and crank out some new-bike miles tomorrow afternoon.

Unfortunately I'm adding myself to the "this month was tough and I didn't make my goals" group.  I had to lighten the training for about a week due to health issues - which we got taken care of and then crashing in the Columbia tri now has me injured.

It seems like we need to get some better energy going in this forum!!!

Bike:28h 42m 58s  - 506.98 Mi
Run:7h 33m 25s  - 46.68 Mi
Swim:6h 03m 28s  - 16328 Yd

June challenge should be to miss less than 3 workouts, with a goal of not missing any.

I like this idea!!  Three strikes and you're out.  Workouts can be made up within 7 days but once you miss three, you have to post in the forum that you're out.  You have to do at least 1/2 of the scheduled mileage for it to count (this way you have a little flexibility and don't risk doing injury for the sake of a game).  Frequency trumps volume!

We'll give a big congrats to those who make it to July 1 with less than 3 missed workouts [and perhaps a "keep it up" as they pass us on race day].

Who's In??

I'm in!  That sounds like a great plan to me.  I'll commit to making sure I don't miss more than three workouts.

And I agree, we need a better vibe going in this forum. Sorry for my somewhat downer post earlier.  Talked to my training buddy today and we agreed I was having a "glass half empty day."

So, to counter that, here is hopefully some positive mojo!

My buddy and I were talking to a local tri-shop owner here in Austin a few weeks back. One comment he made that has stuck with me is to remember why we do this sport.  We should be enjoying our workouts, not dredding them! Our families allow us the time to pursue this hobby, so we should make the most of it and enjoy every moment of it!  When my buddy and I rode this past Friday, it was 3PM and 95 degrees and humid!  We rode 3 1/2 hours.  And I reminded him halfway through the ride of that conversation we had with Jack (Jack & Adam's is the tri-shop).  And we both just savored the moment and soaked in how much we enjoy this sport and how much we are enjoying our journey to Ironman.

So let's all remember, this is a journey. For some of us, this may be our only time in our life to take this journey. Let's take the time to savor every moment of it and enjoy every workout.  Even the toughest ones yet to come.

I enjoy reading everyone's posts. Please keep them coming!

You will freak during your training and think Ironman is impossible.  It might be after a bad day, or even before starting a long workout, but you will get through it.  Two weeks before my first Ironman I felt as if I had forgotten how to swim, but I thought back to all my training and rebuilt my confidence.  I trusted my training plan, did my work, and when race day came I had never felt more ready for anything in my life.

Got a question - What do you guys think about incorporating races into your training?  I have had an olympic in my sights this year since I can't squeeze in a half.  Therefore, this will be my "long" race before Louisville.  Unfortunately it may interfere with my training.  I think the training is more important, but races are fun!!!  I am thinking about doing it, but going easy and just using it as a day to get in a good "smooth"day.   The only problem is that the next day I have a 4 hr 45 min. ride scheduled with an hour and ten minute run following.  What do you think?
