kjivie - 2009-12-28 9:48 AM ? for all you Garmin users: how often do you use the HR feature on your 305?  I have some gift cards to the local tri store and I am thinking about a Garmin, but don't know if I should get the 205 or 305.  Any input?  I have HR on my watch now and never use it (lost the chest strap) so I kinda doubt that I would use it on the 305.

I am using it right now on a regular basis cause I am following Jorge's winter bike program.  Until then I had been ignoring it though.  I was toying with going and doing a LTHR test on the run though and run with it for a while just for kicks.  I won't monitor my HR while running though.  I plan on using it for post run analysis.  I doubt I'll keep up with that for too long though cause the strap bugs me on the run.

I have the 310xt and always use it running and biking.  Last year I used the HR feature while training for my first half marathon.  I built my run endurance up by training in Zone 3 (had a LTHR test).  I am now in tune enough with how I feel that I could probably estimate my HR without it, but I still like monitoring on the run. I have to admit, I don't pay any attention to HR on the bike. I love it, but I'm a gadget girl.  I've never used the 205, but think the 305 is terrific and a great value for the $$$ right now.  (I gave my 305 to my nephew to justify buying the 310, recall gadget girl comment)  I also like having the GPS on the bike and when I'm running in cities other than home (travel lots for work.

Thanks so much, Eric, for allowing me to join...I was looking forward to being a part of your new group! Great to see so many familiar faces. Laughing

NAME:
 roadrhino/Tif/Tiffany

STORY: I'm 32. Was an athlete all of my life until I made a career move in 2004 that completely drained me and wore me down until I became lazy and complacent. I finally made a decision and the committment to change that in October '08. What started as a quest to get "me" back has now become a quest to realize some lifelong goals of completing triathlons and a marathon. I have been a competitive swimmer (& a summer games state gold medalist when I was 9)...collegiate/professional bowler, played softball, basketball, volleyball, track, weightlifting.....anything active I did it.

On a whim in January of  this year, I stumbled on a message board that was discussing triathlons. A light went off in my head and I began strategically planning which training plan to follow and which race to make my first (I settled on the race with the shortest run distance).

I'm now looking forward to my 2nd season and the training and racing that go along with it.

FAMILY STATUS: I have a SO who is going through this journey with me...EXCELLENT support system! We have 2 adorable Boston Terriers who would do triathlons, too if they could.

CURRENT TRAINING: I'm returning from a 3 week break after training constantly since October 2008. Planning on gradually upping the volume over the next 4 weeks then beginning the BT Olympic-Half Ironman 12-Week Bridge program.

After completing the 70.3 in April, I plan on focusing on the sprint distance and improving my times and overall speed in all three disciplines.

2009 RACES: 05/10 - The Rookie Triathlon Sprint; 06/07- Tejas Tri Sprint; 06/28- Y Freedom Tri Sprint; 08/22- Clear Lake International Tri Olympic

2010 RACES: 04/25 - Lonestar 70.3; 05/15- Beach to Bay Marathon Relay; Looking to fill the remaining schedule with several local sprints and destroy my times from 2009 Laughing

WEIGHT LOSS:  I've gained and lost weight a few times in my life. Since October 2008 I have lost about 55 pounds. I feel like I could lose 5-10 more, but I'm not obsessing on the scale...just staying active and making spart food choices on a regular basis and enjoying indulgences less frequently. I have discovered that training for triathlons keeps me focused and motivated with several short-term goals so that it's not a battle over the scale, but of the bigger accomplishments along the way.

How do you like the 310xt?  I am thinking of accidently breaking my 305 so that I don't have any complaints when I go to buy the 310xt  I really love the 305 but I would love the longer battery time.  I don't do many events over 10hrs but there are a few.   I am not in a huge hurry to get it though so I have plenty of time to be creative in how I destroy it.

I also really loved the 305 but I found myself never using it during a tri because it wasn't water proof and I would forget to put it on in T1. Luckily it was always still on the towel when I finished.  I LOVE the 310xt.  I've only done Oly's and half mary's thus far, so the battery life during racing wasnt the issue.....but I travel a good bit and like not having to take the charger when I'm out of town for a week.  There are also a few other nuances I like.  For instance, if you train by pace or HR it can be set to vibrate instead of beep. It also gives you more screen setting options.  I think there was a thread under gear reviews that had a pretty good overview of the differences.  They aren't huge, but if it's time for a new one and you like gadgets...go for it.

Instead of accidentally breaking, maybe you could find someone deserving to gift it to, or even sell.  My nephew is turning into a serious runner, so he would up with mine.

Thank you Eric for allowing me to be apart of the group this year!  I am looking forward to a great year and sharing it with awesome people.

NAME: hippotude/Nikki

STORY: I'm 32. Was an athlete up until my freshman year in college due to another knee injury.  I was a basketball player from the time I was able to hold a ball.  My senior year, I sustained a knee injury that required major reconstruction surgery.  I tried to come back from that by walking onto the basketball team in college but I hurt the knee again and did not want to go through surgery again.  At that point I slipped into a period of self destruction and lead a very unhealthy life.  It was not until after I graduated and meet an awesome individual that I started to change things for the better.

I have completed one season of triathlons and it was a great experience.  I never thought I would be able to do something like that.  I enjoy being active and competitive again.

FAMILY STATUS: I have a SO who had the crazy idea a year ago to do tris.  It is great to be doing this together and knowing there is always someone there to cheer you on when you need it.  We have 2 Boston Terriers and the oldest (Torrey) has started to run with us on our shorter distances.  The youngest, Taylor, can not go on the runs because she has siezures when she gets over extended.

CURRENT TRAINING: I'm returning from a 3 week break after training constantly since October 2008.  I am getting back into the workouts and will begin a 12 week plan for the Lonestar 70.3 soon.

After April, I will focus on the shorter distance tris.  I am planning on competing in some of the same ones from last year...my goal is to improve my times in each and I would like to place in the top 3-5 in my age group this year.

2009 RACES: 05/10 - The Rookie Triathlon Sprint; 06/07- Tejas Tri Sprint; 06/28- Y Freedom Tri Sprint; 08/22- Clear Lake International Tri Olympic

2010 RACES: 04/25 - Lonestar 70.3; 05/15- Beach to Bay Marathon Relay; Looking to fill the remaining schedule with several local sprints.

WEIGHT LOSS:  Since October 2008 I have lost about 40 pounds. I am now just trying to maintain.

Welcome Tiffany & Nikki!!

Fattyfatfat (et al)... I'll be doing the Frostbike 50 again.  Did it last year (all fifty miles) one week after 26.2 (& a PR)... so KK, suck it up Buttercup & lets ride!  They have a 20 & 40 mile course too.  I am certain Jen will be riding too.

Great run! Like the video documentation... maybe invest in a image stabilizer... lol!  Looked awfully chilly!

305 over 205 IMO!!! Hands down.  Unless of course you can spring for the 310...

Definitely think of the hand-me down concept... paying it forward!  Breeds good karma!

Todd - the pup is great!  Love the name!  You know my soft spot for pups!  Leave no pup behind is what I say!

Sounds like everyone got some great gear for Christmas.  I scored a LG Transition bag (total surprise - didn't ask for it & wifey picked it out all on her own!)  Also scored some new Oakleys (LiveSTRONG Flak Jackets) & Lance's latest book - Comeback 2.0

All in all it was a great holiday... wife is out sick, hoping I don't catch anything!  Still haven't found my way back to any kind of physical activity/exercise/tri training....   The fire just has re-lit quite yet.  I did drop the coin on my Buffalo Springs Lake 70.3 registration this AM... So I am in!  Now to work on the training plan for the year...

I am very busy today with work, and I will be away from the office Tue, Thu & Fri.  I will pop in as much as I can, but it will be intermitten until after the new year's weekend.

Everyone have a safe & happy new year!  For all the sickly members... Get well! And please don't be passin' germs via BT! Don't laugh, Nicole has done it... digital osmosis or something!

Have a great week peeps!

Hi Tiffany and Nikki, welcome to the group!I have the 310xt. I like it, but don't love it. I had some inaccurate readings at times. I was in Boston, did a 6 mile run and it said I did 10 ish and the my hr readings seem to be off at times. Last week it said my hr was 230ish and then went back down to the 160s

So is anyone looking to lose some post-holiday weight?

I got on the scale this morning and in my cold medicine enduced haze recieved a very nasty surprise when that lovely number appeared.

I've got 12 that need to come off stat.  Goal is V day.  Anyone want to hound me when I say I go out and get pickled and I'll do the same?

ugh, is anyone else losing entries from your training log?  I keep losing entries and it is really starting to peeve me.  I lost everything I blogged on Christmas day and now this morning I noticed I lost yesterday's run as well as Sunday's bike and a great deal of the strength data.  And who knows what else really.

bzgl40 - 2009-12-26 9:49 PM Question?? What is your nutrition when you go for a long run. Lets say over 2 hrs? I know everyone is different in their nutrition and our bodies take it in differently, so! what is your libation? I ate an hour and something before heading out for the run (prob around 2000 calories). At the two hour mark in the run, I was hungry. The only nutrition I took for the road was a Roctane Gel and a bottle of water.

Regardless of the length of my run I actually have a fairly normal breakfast.  For me that is <400 calories usually.  My usual cup of coffee as well.  Then I wait for about an hour before I head out just to make sure everything is settled.  I usually don't take anything for the first hour of the run but if I was going for about 2 or more I would start taking a HoneyStinger at that 1 hour mark.  Then it kind of depends on how far I am going but I might not have another but I for sure would wait at least 30 minutes.  But, I tend to do one per 6 miles, which is roughly every hour on a training run.  But, if I have less then an hour left I'll skip that last one usually.

Question?? What do you carry for bike tire essentials? I see MOST athletes don't carry the "under seat bag" for carrying a tube or pump. Do you carry those on one of your back pockets?

Everyone I bike with uses an seat bag.  My tubes are in the bag and I have the pump on my top tube.  I have a full size pump.  I refuse to use CO2 cartriges but that is just the tree huger in me  I'm not going to win any races so I don't need to add to the landfill.  And quite frankly, the pump I have will pump a tire as fast as a floor pump.  Oh, and the pump on my top tube cause I have a small bike.  Personally I don't change a thing for races.  I would rather have a slow result instead of a DNF.  No way I want a flat tire to end my race.  I'm fast enough at changing a tire I still won't come in last.

I do the same as Keri mentioned but I put them in the big freezer bag. After a while and continuous repetition of similar workouts, it becomes easier to remember. The hard part for me is losing count of laps. Somewhere along the line my Pea-Brain will be in la-la land and when reality sinks in, I am clueless. I do end up doing a couple hundred more here and there just to make sure I did not cheat myself.
bzgl40 - 2009-12-27 7:17 AMQuestion:  How do you all keep track of what your suppose to be doing at the pool and tracking to the fact that you are doing it?  Or do you just wing it when you get there?  Starting in Feb I'll be doing the HIM training plan and they have sets and stuff for the swimming but I know I won't remember what I am suppose to be doing.

I'll drink to that --- oh, wait we probably shouldn't be drinking!

I went sugar free for a few weeks in October/November and lost 4 pounds and I got all that back!  I'll never understand why it takes 4 weeks to lose 4 pounds and one week to gain it back!  No fair!
I'd like to lose about 6 pounds.  I'm not happy that I am going to be on my heavy side for this 1/2 marathon, the plan was to be thinner for the half and then let myself gain a couple before my first tri.  That didn't go too well.  Maybe I can knock off a  couple in the next few weeks before Jan 17.  We don't have any big New Years plans so that helps.

LOVE the puppy pics!  Beagles are just so stinkin cute!

Welcome ladies!

Todd - cute pup

Keri - beautiful girls

Hope that sickness bug goes away soon for those that are sick!

Oh and as to the swim question - my coach has it on a sheet of paper for us.   It gets wet but it's no biggie.  I also have to really concentrate to remember what lap I am on and when I'm supposed to leave, etc.  My brain just can't do math that quickly.

I use a seat bag with tire levers, CO2 and a tube.  I also have water bottles with me.

My brain is full after catching up on all the reading.  I am very excited about this MG becasue the last one I was in was not very active and the leader quit posting after the first month or so.

As for what watch I wear in training, Tif and I have the Garmin 305.  I like it, but that might be because it is the only thing I have used...besides the Timex HR.  It also is the first gadget that we have had that gives use the cadance on the bike.

As for swimming, I just write the workout on a posted note in sharpie and then stick it to the side of the pool when I get there.  This seems to work for us.

I have enjoyed the posts about swimming.  This is the weakest event for me...but I improved a lot throughout the season last year.  I hope all of that improvement did not go away...I have not been in the water for a couple of months now.  It is good to have Tif around to help with the swimming and she does give me a few pointers now and then.
