Member 108 Upstate NY | Subject: RE: JuniperJen's Keeping It Consistent Group - FULL I too use RPE for most of my training. Sometimes when I am riding on my trainer I will strap it on because it is soooo easy to get distracted on the trainer. Sometimes 15 minutes would pass by and all I was doing was spinning. The heart rate monitor keeps me honest. |

Veteran 545 South Shore, MA | Subject: RE: JuniperJen's Keeping It Consistent Group - FULL I didn't workout today. I went out with some friends and stayed out way past my bedtime last night (which is usually 9pm!), was up with my 13 month old 3 times overnight b/c he has an ear infection, then was up for the day today at 5am b/c my children are all early risers. Although 5am is early even for them! I could not muster up the energy for a workout no matter how hard I tried today. I will definitely be getting in my run tomorrow and hope to also add on a short bike workout, which is what I was supposed to do today. It is 7:30pm right now and I'm ready for bed. Night night! |

It's a schwinn hybrid - from target. not expensive at all, but feels light and has skinny little tires - and if I hate this whole competing thing I should still be able to use it as a family bike. I'm excited to get it on the road! Will try to figure out how to post a picture. $273.00 with tax And a new run pace today! Excited about that, too. Probably since I was trying to get home, cause it was so cold. |

Master 4119 Toronto | Subject: RE: JuniperJen's Keeping It Consistent Group - FULL juniperjen - 2011-02-07 12:26 PM Here's my plan for the week: Mon: 30 min bike, 45 min swim Tues: Hill run (10k-ish) COLD! Wed: 60 min Bike, swim 40 (may move this to the weekend) - NOT DONE! Thurs: Tempo run (13k), swim group Friday: optional yoga - Not doing, need to run and do other things on my lunch. Saturday: 21k long run Sunday: 1 hour bike Okay - let's see - tonight I am definitely doing the tempo run and if motivation allows the 60 minute spin. But I won't get down on myself if I don't. This is still a hobby - I have to tell myself sometimes. |

Congrats :D I will be racing on my mountain bike for my first race and then we'll see if a new bike is warranted. You'll definitely be fine on mountain or hybrid bike. A hybrid or mountain will be good introduction and help you get comfortable on the road. Not much beats the speed of a road or tri bike. I have road bike and it was actually scary for me - i hadn't been on a bike in ages and DH had me get a good entry-level road bike when I bought and i have to say the first few downhills were pretty white-knuckled but now that I have more experience I just love when I get a good bit of pavement and can push for a while. It's an amazing feeling!! I full intend to start shopping for a tri bike the day I sign up for the full-ironman later this year. :D |

Veteran 545 South Shore, MA | Subject: RE: JuniperJen's Keeping It Consistent Group - FULL It's so quiet around here, everyone must have busy weekends! I had a good workout this afternoon at our masters swim. I still have a little bit of upper respiratory congestion, so breathing was not as easy during my swim, but it was a good workout overall. I bought a new pair of goggles a couple of weeks ago and used them for the second time this afternoon - LOVE them! And realize how bad my old pair really was - always fogging up and didn't fit well. I think I'll be sticking with this new pair for awhile; they're Nike but don't know the exact name offhand. Had a nice meal out with my husband this evening which was a nice treat! Enjoy the rest of your weekend! |

Member 97 Memphis | Subject: RE: JuniperJen's Keeping It Consistent Group - FULL Hi friends! OK - so here we go into the first moderate week of training. Looks like I have 2 moderate weeks, a hard week, taper week and then RACE DAY March 12! Is anyone else competing this early? Suddenly I am most nervous about the swim. I am at 12ish for the 500 at the moment, and I'm going to start just upping the time at this point - IE swimming without stopping for 15min, then 20, etc. So here's my question - what should I be thinking about at this stage in the game? Im worried about not getting open water practice in. I hear the lake is super muddy and dark. Swam for a bit today with my eyes closed...tried to simulate Here's my training this week, these are doubles: Sunday: 3-4mi run Monday: off Tuesday: swim 30 zone II, bike 45 zone II Wednesday: run 30 zone II, bike 45 zone II Thursday: off Friday: swim zone I 20min, strength 20min Saturday: brick: bike 60 run 30 wish me luck! |

Awesome and good luck. I wouldn't worry too much about anything other than trying to make all your workouts. About the swim, if u have never done it don't worry too much. It would be good to get out there and give it a try. Outdoor swimming is something different, first time I tried it I couldn't get my head in for 15 minutes. It is unnerving to look down and not see a nice pool floor. Every tri I nave done I have had to get in the water early to relearn how to put my face in the water. Keep that in mind, common problem for people who swim outdoors rarely. |

It's very exciting that your race is coming up! For me, there are only really run races at this time of year. The tri season is short! :S I would definitely recommend at least one quick swim the in lake beforehand. Sad to say but your pool time is great for building your swim strength but swimming in the lake will be different. Even if it's the day before. Don't go alone, though, at least have someone on shore, swim with you or be in a boat. You won't need much, 20 minutes or so should be fine to get used to the water temps, practice peeking out of the water for sighting, etc. I know the first time I was so nervous that i had to take some practice strokes to calm my breathing down. In terms of training. Just keep it up. When you're training try to visualize the race and what you'll be thinking - positive self talk and mantras help. For me, when running it's 'Strong and tall' to help me improve my posture. And in swimming it's 'i can do this' over and over! :D And, this is good, from my husband is if you find yourself panicky just count your strokes - if you're breathing every 3rd stroke it's - 1 - 2 - 3 And to keep your mind occupied, make a list of things you'll want in your transition zone. That way you won't forget anything. But you'll be great! And remember to enjoy it!! |
