46 mile bike followed by 5.2 mile run.  Good brick for today.

Used the new P3.  Felt solid and compact however I've decided not use it for my race in Texas.  I just picked the bike up yesterday.  Was hoping for it to be ready over 3 weeks ago, and now there just isn't enough time.

I did not like the feel of the saddle after the first 25 miles.  Other than that the bike great except my legs felt different (more tired) than when I ride the P2.  Neck soreness did not occur and even though it was a windy day I felt much more aerodynamic going into headwinds as evidence by my speed and RPE (someday will get a power meter).  The shifting was smooth and hill climbing was very good.  Given I only have 2 weeks before I have to get my bike boxed and ready to ship to Texas, I have decided to stick with the P2 for this race, and start working the P3 when I get back.  I know the cables will like stretch a bit as well and I don't want to change things up just before this race.

John, sorry to her about you bike.

Kelly, congrats on your race!!!

I think you made the right decision. You don't want to find out during an Ironman that something about the new bike isn't working for you. Race how you train.

Well Kelly is racing today, GO KELLY!

I was up a lot of the night and delivered a baby early this am. Finished up rounds and then did some office work.

I then had a pretty nice track workout. I can run at the PSU track as when I'm on-call the hospital is 3 minutes away and I just hold my pager in my hand. Strange, but I can't really go on a run that would take me away from a 30 minute response time.

My running feels easier and faster which is nice.

Hope you all have a great day!

Mine too!!! All of a sudden I'm running sub-8 minute miles without thinking about it. In fact...I'm trying to run slower but every autolap, my watch is telling me sub-8. Nice problem to have! I've had a "recovery" week so I think I'm finally picking up some taper speed.

90 minute bike and 60 minute run done already...had to cut the run short because we had company coming over and apparently you need to shower before hanging out with other people. Hoping to squeeze in another short effort before the day is over so I can make my volume targets for the week.

Thanks, all. It does suck but not the end of the world, of course.  I've managed to get my Soloist in ride-ready shape today (though it still needs a new chain).  And was able to get my wheel over to an LBS who felt bad enough for me that they got it fixed back up in a couple hours (just needed a new spoke and re-tensioning).  I haven't done any training today, and may just skip it.  Maybe going into the race this way, I'll just appreciate the fact that I'm out there doing it.  Who knows?

Not going to worry about replacing the P2 right away.  Figure I might as well put some thought into whether I should go with the same bike or something different (maybe even join Jimmy with a new P3 ).  I'm slower on the Soloist, but not by tons.  And I can use the bike as an excuse instead of my relative lack of fitness--trying to find some bright sides.

Thanks for letting me 'dump'.  I'll try to get things back to HIM/IM training & racing topics.

@Johnny...sorry to hear about the bike incident.  Dislike very much, but at least you weren't hurt.

@Jim...good decision on the bike.  Definitely not enough time to get fully comfy with the new ride.  Plus you'll probably be faster on the old bike until you get a more saddle time in the new baby.

@Dave & Fred....nice running guys.  Keep up the good work.

@everyone...Just finished cutting my grass after my PL (personal longests) in the pool.  For me, 3400 yards is long and I feel good about getting that under my belt.  I now get to move on to my run focus week next!

Johnny sorry about your bike and frustrations, but you seem to be very level headed about it, which is key since most people would act off emotion and frustration, I have done it before.

This weekend was a bit of a bummer for me as well. Ran the Crazylegs in Madison yesterday (8k) and was very excited to beat my time from last year (38:01). Everything as going great and I hit 4 miles at 29:xx so I had plenty of time the last mile. But as it has happened so rarely and randomly my HR spike drastically in the matter of seconds again and forced me to actually stop dead in my tracks and pull over. The last mile was a walk/jog and I finished just under 40 minutes total. Very bummed especially since I had a shot at sub 37:00, but realized how strong and efficient I ran the first four miles so I will take that away from the run. Felt good to run without a hr monitor and watch as I do every year for crazylegs.

So with my little HR debacle I am going to get a second opinion on the situation with another cardiologist. A-fib runs in the family and I clearly display many of the symptoms.

Planned to ride the IMOO loop after and do two loops but decided instead since there were 30mph sustained winds that I would instead do my long ride today here in La Crosse. Well the weatherman failed me and it hasn't cracked 40 today with the same winds from yesterday when it was almost 70 in Madison. JUst a frustrating weekend in general, doing my long ride on the trainer later today hoping to put in 2 hours but with more intensity.

The lack of spring here in Wisconsin is really starting to drag now and just beating me mentally. Coldest spring we have had in 15 years and the average daily temps are about 10 degrees cooler.

That is the end of my negative ramblings

Run breakthroughs are great! It's a great sign especially when you are tapering, keep the body rested and you will feel great come race day!

Had a pretty good 14ish mile run today.  Considering my brick yesterday, I was expecting it to be difficult today.  It wasn't easy...but manageable.

Johnny...I'm a firm believer that when bad stuff happens...it happens for a reason.  You might just end up with a new bike that fits you better and makes you faster...something you may not have gone through otherwise.

And congrats to Kelly for a strong race.  2:27 is smoking...

Raced my first tri of the season today. A local sprint. Won my age group and no, I was not the only one in my age group this time . I actually won prize money (a gift card to the bike shop). More important than all of that I didn't make a bunch of stupid mistakes, and had fun racing again (didn't have much fun last year).

John - sorry to hear about your bike.  You're taking it an awful lot better than I would.  Did you consdier getting the frame repaired?  I know there are places that fix carbon frames, and people swear by the service.

Dina & Kelly - fantastic races.  AG Nationals for one, and AG win for the other.  That's awesome!

I'm  not familiar with carbon frame repair.   Most of the frame is fine.  It's just the derailleur hanger that got shaved in half.  Unfortunately, not sure you could repair that to be sturdy enough to hang a new one reliably.  I guess I'll look into it, thanks.

Yes!  Absolutely huge congrats to both of you.  That is awesome!

Makes me want to race again no matter what bike is under me.

Hey question?

What are you guessing will be your IM run pace at Texas?

Great question...I've been thinking about that a lot lately. I think I could run 4 hours flat...but I'm really unsure how I'll respond to the humidity/heat, and accumulated fatigue. My only open marathon was last season - just under 3:40. I feel like I'm in better shape now.

If I give myself 1:10 for the swim, 6:30 for the bike, and 10 mintues of transitions, that means I'd need to run 4:10 to hit my 12 hour goal. 9:32 miles seem easy-peasy based on the running I'll be in competely new territory obviously before I take one step of the marathon on 5/21.

We'll see...I guess the real answer is that I'll go on RPE. If that puts me ahead of 12 hours, great. If not, I really don't think I'll care. It's just nice to have a target. I do know I don't want to be walking the marathon. =)

Picked up my first bike travel case from a friend/training partner for $40.  Sweet.  Not sure what brand it is, but it's your standard hard clam shell type box.  Fits perfectly in the trunk of my Altima too.

Hey question?

What are you guessing will be your IM run pace at Texas?

This is hard question for me as I am hoping to run the entire marathon but have never done yet in an IM.  My personal best for a stand alone marathon is 3:40.  I am in much better shape however and last year did a 25K at 8:04 min mile pace and felt pretty sure I could have continued on at that pace for many more miles. This year my running speeds are slower but I've been more volume focused.

My goal times are:

Swim:  sub 85 min

Bike: sub 6:20

Run:  4:30

Transitions 10 min or less

Total 12:30.

Heat and humidity are going to be a challenge.

To keep things in perspective, my first goal is to just finish and have fun.  Anything can happen on race day.  That's part of the attraction of Ironman.  So far my best IM time is 13:06.  I could have broken 13 hours but with 10 miles to go on the bike I saw someone just collapse while riding and he fell hard to the ground.  I believe he had a heat injury, heat stroke vs heat exhaustion.  I tended to him until the motorcycles/help arrived.  This was about 10-15 minutes.  This cost me my bike split PR which could have been  6:15.  OK, I'm making excuses.

Off to the pool for a quick swim then work which will keep me going till after 9 pm.  If energy left, will try to get in a late run.

Good day to everyone!!

Trying to find a way to post the Swimsense details since they are fairly interesting for analysis...  for now, I just have the csv dump...

Wow...May is finally here.  Which means I'm getting really close to my goal races for the first half of 2011.  An Oly on 5/15 and a HIM on 6/4.  Getting a bit anxious...but mostly because I'm pretty much right where I want to be.

Wow - gone for the weekend and lots to catch up on!

JK - Really sorry to hear that - can you check with bike shop to see if Cervelo will warranty the frame? they have one of the best warranties in the biz, if not then Calfee is supposed to be able to fix most carbon bikes - cost is $500ish and includes a good warranty if I remember correctly.

Bike nutrition: I bring a bottle of infinit (280ish calories) and shot blocks and live off the course for the rest of my needs. This past weekend at my half I had bottle of infinit and 2 packs of shot blocks plus a bottle of heed and 2 bottles of water. Total fluids: 70ish and total calories of 630 (avg of 260ish an hour). I try for between 240-290 calories per hour.

Swim - great job everyone of the swim sets/breakthroughs!

HR - a while back we had a discussion on HR on the run and Fred mentioned that my run at SYR was a bit off (low HR vs pace). After this weekends half I think SYR was low bc it was overcast and cool out. This past weekend was the first warm run of the year I have had and my HR was mid/upper Z3 the entire time.
