So do you like the new P5?

No, not at all, think it is a total copy of a few bikes out there and has nothing original except for the hydro brake set up.

Then again i have never been a fanboy of Cervelo, the only one i would consider owning would be the Soloist/S1, but i already have an aluminum Crit bike, so there is no need for me to have 2.

Fred D - 2012-01-17 7:19 AM Good swim for me this am. I'm no fish but I really do enjoy swimming. Truthfully I enjoy all 3 disciplines....no not exactly equally, but I really like the variety. If pushed I would say I IME cycling the most. What is your most favorite and least favorite discipline? This is the QOD (question of the day)

Favorite is pretty obvious, i love the bike, i train EVERYTHING around the bike, swimming and running are a tossup, it used to be running was my least favorite, but as i ramp up my volume, my open 10k pace is coming down, and i am enjoying running more.  Swimming is the hardest to do, as it requires driving to my gym and such. I also hate the pool, i LOVE open water, and when the sound warms up enough, all my swimming is done in the ocean.

Cycling is without doubt my favourite of the 3 and swimming is probably my least favourite. Don;t get me wrong, I like swimming, but find it the most frustrating of the three at the mo.

My ride is a Carrera Vanquish that I just got  back today from being fixed (a crash bent my rear  hanger which then ripped it off the frame) its a cheap road bike but it will do for now.

I don't think a 4' test is a great extrapolation for FTP. It is usually used for helping with a 20' test to estimate CP60. Does he not have you doing another 20' test?
\

I think you are referring to the 6x4' intervals.  If so, the next time you do that specific workout (6x4') try to maintain the power on the first 5 intervals that you did for the last one (6th interval) in the previous workout.  For the rest of the workouts continue to use your CP from your most recent testing.  That was just specific to the 6x4' workout.  That is what I remember the last 2 years...not doing that program this year.

Got ya'- I thought that going up 5-10watts higher on the last interval and being able to hold, that would have been the # to use on the following exercises. I'll stick to the plan the rest of this week as next week is another 20min test & 5 min.My. Umbers have gone up some what but not as much as I would have liked. Lazyness is taking the blame!Re: to S/B/R - I've always been involved in sports but nothing like the three we attempt to do.Last time I swam competitively was when I was 12 yrs old. My last bike was a shwinn bmx with yellow mag wheels ( Rudy's front wheel on his Tt bike). I bought the roadie I have because the 1/2 Ironman @ Lake Quassy was comIng up. Running- more like blah! For me. I ran because of soccer and some cross country.Top to bottom I enjoy :I do enjoy all three -BikingSwimmingRunningBiking more so because of the speed rush and being able to go fast, specially hammering away with other roadies.Swimming comes naturally.Running- I seem to avoid it and make excuses as.to not go out there and put the time.MAybe it's fear of aggravating a recurring knee or ankle injury (excuse).I spend more time on the bike because it's my biggest weakness. I run because I have to finish, and I swimbecause it is the one where I can relax and meditate. Namaste ,Thomas

If pushed I would say I IME cycling the most. What is your most favorite and least favorite discipline? This is the QOD (question of the day)

Most favorite is swimming because it is natural to me and I have always loved the water and being in it...competitive and recreationally.

I have learned to enjoy running in the last year-and-a-half...a lot of that I can attribute to seeing and feeling so much improvement during that time frame. I entered triathlon as a horribly slow runner, so I spent a lot of time and offseasons focusing on improving the run.

The bike continues to be a work in progress. I never had many problems with the bike until an Olympic distance tri where the course was not well manned (cars pulling out from side streets, no protection at all at a major intersection)...and even the overall race winner was hit by a car on the course. So mentally, it was tough for me to want to get back on the bike and train.

It's been the one aspect that I tend to neglect, although right now that's where I can make the most improvement. Typically I enjoy being out on the bike once I get out there, but sometimes that's a hassle, too. I'm looking to improve my bike training consistency this year, maintain it in the offseason at the end of the year, and finally start seeing some gains as I have had with the run.

I think it changes.  I am "best" at swimming, time wise.  "Worst" at running.  That said, sometimes I get sick of swimming, so I can't say it's my favorite.  I really do enjoy all three.  I love running trails in the early morning as the sun comes up, or in the afternoon on a bluff overlooking the ocean.  I love long social rides with friends with coffee and a meal after, I love long slow, hard, climbs up into the mountains where your legs burn and all you hear is your breath.

I don't love so much the interval/speed work, although I love the feeling it gives me after

Thoughts in "big workouts" in IM training?  I had heard of this before, but there's a thread in IM talk talking about Friel's suggested big day of

  • 1-hour swim
  • 90-min break
  • 5-hour bike
  • 90-min break
  • 2-hour run

Personally, that would destroy me for a week.  the swim is IM distance, the bike is nearly depending on the course, the run's a HIM for me.  But i am not sure what the purpose of it is.  Pacing?  Nutrition?  Seems the 1.5 hour breaks would give you a skewed result if that's what you were after.  I know the one big day I did injured me so they're not for me.

Anyone else do them and found them beneficial?

I kind of like the looks of this. Might have to try it out for AZ. But I do agree with Fred, when would you put it in the schedule? I don't like it within three weeks, maybe a good kick off for the peak weeks? 5 weeks out?

Is that at IM pace or easier?  That's some darn long transition times.

If anybody wants to cry today can I recommend The Sufferest - A Very Dark Place workout on the bike.  Oh My!  This one ranks right up there with the most painful workout I have done....and it was only 55 minutes long!  5x4' intervals with varying intensities between 110%-140%FTP.  It hurt alot and took every ounce to not quit on the last two.

Planning on a EZ shorty run at noon.  Whats everyone else got going on today?

First day back in the pool after a month layoff.  I was scheduled for 4000 but cut it to 3000 cause at some point I have to work today.   Felt good to be back in.  Worked on some stuff that golfpro suggested and I think it helped...until my arms were so tired all I could concentrate on was lifting them out of the water.  lol

Good Grief!  In case you did not have anything planned on Saturday LOL.  Thats 11 hours of the day right there.  I would not do it just because of the time factor...which is why I am not training for IM.  If I were, I would rather ride for 4-5 hours at a pace harder than IM effort and then run 1-1.5 hours at IM pace.  This way I can still make it to home depot and bed, bath & beyond on my saturday .

I am looking forward to the pain cave!

Tell me you are one of those that has the IWBMATTKYT Flag on the wall? Cool

I'll have to re-do Revolver one more time before I hit the AVDarkPlace vid.

I'll be doing WK6 day 3 of the Winter Bike Program (Jorge's) and jumping straight into the

dreadmill for a short run. Hopefully!

I would need three days off after that kind of a workout.

I am with you Ryan- I'd rather do a race pace bike effort and then a short run at race pace (8 miles).

I really like the bike...not that it is my best...but I like riding.  Swimming was the thing that scared me the most...I was not sure I could swim the distance without stopping at a wall or two along the way.  However, I have come to enjoy all three...and it really helps make traning interesting because I am not always doing the same thing.

Good morning!

I am 3 for 3 - on morning workouts, that is.  It really does come down to being organized. I was a little annoyed because my cadence sensor wasn't working - i fiddled with it a bit but i really needed to get the spin in so i went blind and just by time.

Planning to swim tonight. No excuses! The pool around the corner from me has lane swim from 8-9.  I weenied out on swimming last night because 1. I got home late due to a problem on the subway and 2. the wind picked up a lot late in the evening and I really wasn't up to walking the 15-20 mins to the other pool (we don't have a car).  So, no weenie tonight! Must swim!
