TheClaaaw - 2012-10-11 1:48 PM Slowly opening the door and peeking inside......Hi there. Back in August Fred invited me to this group. I have been hesitant to come in, since I really have no idea what a mentor group does.

But I figured it was time to say hello. Looking back over the last few pages, this looks like THE place to be. I was never at the cool kids' table before, so I won't know how to act. I'll just follow goosedog's lead. That should help. (no pink font option on my iPad.)

Welcome TheClaaaw (Andy)

Where in Central PA are you?

Well....I don’t know if I am a cool kid or not.  I am kind of boring, but very passionate about triathlons.  Laughing

Well it took 12 miles and 3000yds swimming to make me tired today.  I have now hit 43 miles of running for this week.  My swimming speed is affected and just felt blaa in the water today.

You have been a beast this year James!

I have been taking a 'little break' from training the past couple weeks to reset and get ready for hopefully a good season next year.  Basically 4 weeks of just 1 workout per day with just some short bouts of intensity.  The last 2 years I have found myself burned out in July so really concentrating on taking a break and then do some serious 'get fast' work this winter starting last week of October.

I said awhile ago that I was looking into Endurance Nation and I am officially drinking the EN Kool Aid!!

Fred D - 2012-10-11 9:01 AMoh there are some things I miss, but honestly Neil I just like riding. The power meter made it too methodical for me and the proof was in the pudding so to speak in that I didn't get faster or better with it. I like it for shorter intervals and trainer stuff but again I have the computrainer so I haven't really lost that. I'm not even using cadence these days.... Just doesn't matter to me in the slightest.

Fred, is this approach one that you plan on carrying forward through your training, or will you begin using more data in the near future? I am in a similar camp and ride - whether trainer or on the road - by RPE. No power, no heart rate data.  I'll use speed and cadence as a reference point against RPE, but generally, that's about it.

Fred D - 2012-10-10 10:54 PM Had some tenderness in my shin area with my run today. Probably need a few days off rest to recover it. I've always felt shin tightness or tenderness usually relates to calf tightness as well. I might have tweaked it on the cold rainy ride yesterday or whatever. Sort of frustrating, but no point in pushing it at this time of year.

Make sure to stretch those calfs and shins.  Hope that shin gets better soon

mndymond - 2012-10-10 9:34 PM So not to beat a dead horse about the activity+fever stuff, but: I ended up in emergency today because of shortness of breath and diagnosed with bilateral pneumonia. They let me see the chest x ray. It was a bit of a white out....badness.....

YIKES!  Take it easy and get well soon!

Yikes x2,

get well soon x100

Do you believe the race played a big part in it ? Would it have probably been avoided had you not raced ?

I think it played a significant role in the progression to pneumonia. High exertion is known cause some level of immunologic compromise, on top of the fact that race day was a bit cool and the repeated irritation of my assumed already influenza infected chest probably took its toll. Its relatively rare for a young, healthy person without asthma, smoking, etc to wind up with bilateral pneumonia. The option that would explain that is H1N1 because it is known to have particularly devastating effects to the lungs but I think it is more likely a rampant secondary bacterial infection as evidenced by the green gunk I've been getting out. And my chest X-ray is the first bilateral pneumonia I've ever seen in someone less than 50 who didnt have some level of immunocompromise or history of lung pathology. Not that i have a ton of experience but Ive only seen small pneumonias in young people. Looking back: stupid decision to race. I'm paying for it now....

If it makes you feel any better, which I'm sure it won't, I have been in your shoes exactly. I think I was probably around the same age, too.

Actually, I also had bilat pneumonia last year. Little fuzzy on the timeline but the chances that I overexerted myself while still recovering are excellent.

{MELON PRESS} I just hope you feel better soon, and I hope this lesson sticks for us both. I dunno, I'm awfully stupid.

I hope it sticks too Yanti! I don't plan on exerting myself too much over the next little while. My challenge of the day is to get up the stairs! Haha

This is contrary to Fred, but I miss my PM.  I received a replacement from Cycleops but haven't bothered to build it into a wheel yet since I don't have a head unit.  I did decide that I'll get the 910 - just makes sense for me.  Riding without the PM I've found that I really miss the data feedback during and after the ride.  I'm finding that it helps to both motivate and push me.

Hopefully not too much longer.  I'm going to the Toronto Bike Show this weekend so may find a deal.

I would love to have a PM for racing...especially on a hilly course to make sure I am riding steady.  Would you put it back on for racing Fred?

I know some were discussion running cadence.  I took my cadence the past 3 runs.  8 miles @92, 6 miles @90 and 12 miles @92.  This is the only time I have ever count my running cadence.

43 miles and its only Thursday!   Sweet!  I am targeting 40 miles this week and I usually run my long run on Saturday.  This Sunday I was planning on running (not racing) a half marathon in town so I might not be able to hit my 40 (my week ends on Saturday).  Debating if I should try and cram more miles in before Sunday to hit is anyways!  Smile

Welcome Andy!

rymac - 2012-10-11 2:21 PM I was looking into Endurance Nation and I am officially drinking the EN Kool Aid!!

I'll be interested to know what the kool aid tastes like.  Looks like lots of intensity from those guys.

James - nice job running this week (I'm jealous).  I took my cadence the other day at a couple of points in a short run and found it to be right around 86-87.  I think my longer legs should equate to a slightly lower cadence.  At least that's my perception.

Welcome to the group Andy.

I downloaded that free "off season" plan they offered recently and while I don't think EN is for me, it seems like a good program.

It seems to parallel alot of what I was already doing but with alot more structure and focus.  I was looking for a little bit more direction and what is nice is the explanation behind what is happening week to week and why.

The OS plan is going to be alot of hard focused work which is why I am taking it easy for 4 weeks prior.  I will let you know how it goes.

Arend, that's exactly what I was thinking.  I've had a couple of swim coaches tell me that my ankle flexibility is horrendous and that I'm fighting a lot of drag not to mention have a non-existant kick.  One gave me stretches and the other said to try doing kick sets regulary with the zoomers which I find I can really feel it stretching it out.

A friend of mine really likes ART and has suggested the following when I have shin pain - it has made ALL the difference for me: take a tennis ball and roll it as hard as you can stand on the outside of your shins (so, on your left leg, on the left side of the shin, on the right leg, on the right side of the shin) really focusing on the tender bits (which for me are up closer to the knee at the real meaty bit) to try to get it to release. I do this while participating in conference calls if my shins are particularly grumpy.

Stretching the calves is also very important, and the ankle stretch Rene posted. All good stuff.

Welcome Andy! Your blog has been a fantastic motivation for me, so I'm glad to get the chance to know you better. Best of luck at B2B! That's an event that's on the list for "someday". I'll be interested to hear your feedback.

I am unfamiliar with the Endurance Nation Off Season plan - can anyone provide a link?

In TT (stay out Fred), there is a thread about treadmill running that contained a link to Bobby McGee's running fundamentals talking about candence/stride/etc that was very interesting, don't know if ya'll have seen it. The link to the video is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GSGzqkjrWRA

Gotta start the evening activities, so I'm out for the night - I'm sure we'll be at page 45 by tomorrow morning at this rate. Ciao!
