You can read the details in my training log for today, but I had an "accident" while running today. Fortunately, just #1 and in my drive way, but seriously . . . I could not hold it another second. Someone please tell me that this has happened to you. I am feeling like an old person right now. Are you kidding?? People practice that! Now you don't have to practice |

Veteran 659 East Texas | Subject: RE: Mental Manatee Mentors Part 3--CLOSED Ok a little more time to post this morning. I updated my race report from yesterdays race. A couple of points. SWIM - The swim was a pool swim and very interesting. I was worried about going under the lane ropes but actually had no problems whatsoever. Just pushed off the wall at an angle and came up on the other side. I was happy with my swim however I think I should have been about 40 seconds faster. BIKE - Chip Seal for most of the bike course and 30 mph winds made it challenging. The wind was mostly crosswind which is actually very good because it will help me prepare for Galveston which is 56 miles along the gulf. RUN - I was so nervous the entire run that I never really gave it much effort over about 60%. My legs did tighten up but there was no IT Band issues at all. I think I just tightened up due to the lack of running in the last 6-8 weeks. OVERALL - I was very pleased with the performance especially with my lack of training in the last 8 weeks and bringing home an age group medal was just icing on the cake. MANATEES - You guys got me through this injury. Over the last 6 weeks or so my activity has dwindled in this thread due to frustration and depression over being hurt. I've received PMs and Inspires that really kept me going. Thanks to everyone of you. That's why we have these groups. The last 6 weeks have been a very humbling experience for sure. 8 weeks ago I was bragging to friends and family how many hours I trained, how hard I trained, how fast I trained, I, I, I, I, I.......... Yesterday I was just praising God that I could be outside running with other people in a sport that I loved. |

Veteran 2441 Western Australia | Subject: RE: Mental Manatee Mentors Part 3--CLOSED I hope everyone had a great time at their races on the weekend. Can't wait to read the race reports.I did the entry for my first ever run event over the weekend. It is a 12km and it is in 10 weeks time. I am excited but also a bit nervous about it. I am going to use Jeff Galloway's 10 km plan which will work well because it still gives me 3 days a week to ride and swim. My only question is seeing how its a 10km plan and my race is 12km should I increase the distance of the long runs in the plan so that I am ok with the 12km? (I'm starting with the basics off the web for now because my books won't be here for another week, they have to circle the globe 3 times before they arrive from the US.) Consider it a practice pee for the longest, most challenging "A race" you have yet to do. I think it's a good strategy to test it out well in advance Sorry if TMI, but we say that's not possible in this group. You can read the details in my training log for today, but I had an "accident" while running today. Fortunately, just #1 and in my drive way, but seriously . . . I could not hold it another second. Someone please tell me that this has happened to you. I am feeling like an old person right now. I am! What's TMI again? Have totally peed myself both accidentally and on purpose. And yes, it's a critical skill for the conscious athlete. What Yanti said. I have a friend who used to be a BT'er, Trixie, how has shared stories about strategically using pee to get drafters (especially male ones) off her fast little a$$ on the bike. Peeing during a race is a whole art form for Trix. (in case you are wondering, you would strategically place your stream over you back wheel so that it sprays in the direction of your tailgator). |

A full century might be a bit too much for me. I'll probably cut it to a metric century. And on that note, I think I'm cutting out cycling until after my HM. That'll give me two months before my first sprint, which is probably plenty. I want to focus on running, and get miles in. |

Got a daughter married off last Friday, my youngest (and only one at home) moved to Virginia on Saturday, and my daughter and grandbabies went back to New Mexico on Tuesday. I am officially an empty nester, if you don't count the husband and 2 dogs and 3 cats. This has always been a TMI thread so it is my turn. My husband is like a new man (sort of). We have never had alone time (2nd marriage for both of us and blended 5 kids 12 years ago). He is like a teenager that wants candy. All the begging for window shopping is amusing. Afterall, he is in his late 50's and although the mind is a teenager, the body is not 18 any longer. I am enjoying some of the "lines" he his coming up with. If he was picking me up at a bar, he would lose. He is getting better but I have to share with all the men that telling someone they always smell good, is not really the positive reinforcement we ladies are seeking if that is the best you can come up with. I had asked him to tell me what he found attractive. FAIL but oh so cute that he tried. As I said, with a little coaching, he may be trainable. So on that note, if all my own husband can find good about my body is my huge melons and that I smell good, I really think I need to start reforming this situation. As I said, he is old and I need to stay marketable. You never know when you may need that marketability. Big Sur is a little over 6 weeks away. I had a bit of an awakening at my 5k on Sunday. I ran all the way through (which is the 1st time to run 3.1 miles without walking in a long, long time-about 10 months). I went sub 12's/mile so that was okay. 11:20/mile has consistently been my happy pace, my zen pace, my comfort-no stress pace for years so I have definitely lost fitness because this 11:49/mile was a zone 4 effort. I will still run something at Big Sur but I don't care if it is the 5k or the 9 mile. I know it will not be the 26.2 or the 21 mile. I am working with a trainer and tonight is a goal setting session for the next 6 weeks. I am going to really concentrate on diet and getting healthy. My house is going to be purged of clutter (now that the clutter kid is gone). This is the 1st time since I was 22 years old, that I get to be ME first and not mom. Now that I've caught you all up, what the hell is going on here. When did we change our name to Mental (seems fitting)? Did we open up to new people or just relocate? Yanti-how are your ribs healing? Are you able to play with piglets yet or was that never impacted by the injury? Salty-how is Boston training going? Fox-thanks for the camping tips in Dayton. I look forward to meeting you at Hawk. Any more stories from anyone on crazy family members, drunken women, or training mishaps?
JoGo, where in VA? I'm in Richmond if you need someone to check up on the kid.
She is in Manassas, VA. I have no idea where it is. Sounds like a suburb of D.C. She is thrilled by how many stars she can see in the sky. That is my kid. She is 21, got into some bad stuff and got herself out, happily works at Build-a-Bear (her dream job when she was in middle school) and just goes about life with a quirkiness and living for only today. Yep, Manassas is up by DC. It's a nice area. Lots of stars in VA. It annoys me that we don't have street lights, but there is very little light pollution. |

Master 6595 Rio Rancho, NM | Subject: RE: Mental Manatee Mentors Part 3--CLOSED Looking forward to the RR's! And luf the Scooby story! I had an interesting day today. I had a failed race-flat "simulation". First let me start by saying that I was pretty confident in not getting a flat on race day and being able to easily fix it if I did. I live in the desert so goatheads/cacti are EVERYWHERE. So I have Armadillo tires, liners and thick tubes which are also filled with a sealant. It's extremely redundant protection and I haven't had a flat in 3 years of running this system. Until today. The downside of this system is a road repair is next to impossible so if you can't air the tire and get the sealant to fill the hole, you are done. So I'm happily cruising along about an hour and a half in to my four hour ride and I hear a loud "tink, tink, tink" so I stop and search for the offending noisemaker. There is a rusty nail sticking out of my sidewall!!!!! I pull out the nail and spin the tire to get the goo working into the hole then pull out my CO2 and adapter. I used up my cartridge and my tire (and my mood) were still deflated. I call DH and he manages to get the air in to the tube, but it's still leaking. After a trip to the LBS I now have a new tube and a new CO2 system, but my confidence against flats on race day has definitely taken a hit. I am more concerned about that than I am about missing out on 2.5 hours of my ride I guess it's good that I learned about the issues before-hand but I'm not feeling as bullet-proof anymore. |
