I'm feeling tired.  Does that count?

And totally bummed - Vineman is out for next year.  Cry  I was so looking forward to it but just realized it is July 17.  My daughter's birthday is July 16.  Oh well need to find another summer destination HIM for the hubby and me.

Ah, so sad we won't meet, but your daughter's bday is definitely more important!  We will meet someday and it will be fun.  In the meantime, get some food and rest and you will be energized.

I am struggling just a little to dial it way back for a few weeks, but have gotten some travel in and some home improvement projects done during the past 2 weeks.   Happy August to all!

SSMinnow - 2010-08-03 11:12 AM Off to do the longest pool swim ever...I hope I'm back in time for dinner. Cool

Long pool swims are the worst.  Hope you don't die of boredom!!

Ok, 4000 yards later,  I am back to eat a late lunch.  Since I am still a tadpole (sorry Linda!), these swims take forever, but I am now at the stage where I need to know I can pull them off so wasn't bored, more relieved!

Stan, so happy to see you back.  While I know work travel can be a pain, it sounds interesting.  What exactly do you do for a living?  ease back into those two a days ok?  don't want to be reading about an injury!

congrats on the swim on the looong swim.  Did you get dizzy?

I ran a portion of a multi strategy fund for a mid size asset manager.  7 months ago I started a new company with another partner doing pretty much the same thing but concentrating on raising money in Asia vs the US or Europe.

Ok Missy, while some of us had an off season, you had none....you went from tri training to marathon training to tri traing...crazy!  Take advantage of the relaxed downtime before you start Boston training...given your speed, it'll be a lot of work to PR in Beantown!!!

Sam--bummer on Vineman, but if you and Tony come up with a Spring HIM fling let me know what it is...might be interested. Vineman is definitely out for me....two HIMs in WI that weekend.

Glenn--welcome back...let us help motivate you!!!!

Going to try to swim  the IM course again tomorrow in honor of Shark week!  There is only one coach in Madison who is willing to swim there given the boat traffic and lake condition-it green and it stinks!  He was my swim coach last year and completely unreliable.....proving to be the same this year since he no showed me on Monday.  Long run first so if he doesnt show the day isn't a total loss!

PS. We just booked our two weeks in Kauai....leaving January 28th!!!

I'll kick it off....am doing another aquathon tomorrow night, well sort of...because of this honking big workout over the weekend Coach Steve has asked me to skip the 5K part, so basically racing a 1000m swim.  It's the most important part to me anyway.  It's in the biggest lake in Madison so great practice for IM.  Goal is to stay calm, be efficient and hold my line the best i can.

Me - I'm racing!  Ft. Ritchie Olympic distance.  No real goals this go round since I figure I will be pretty tired going into the race.  I'd like to be around 2:55:00.  There are supposed to be some hills on the bike and I still swim like a tadpole so we'll see what happens.  Always fun to do a race w/ Tony and my best friend.  We will also get to see Linda again.

What do I carry in my bike bag?  Tony - although he doesn't quite fit.  And if I'm not riding w/ him, my cellphone so I can call him if I have problems.  LOL!

My first half marathon is Saturday, with minimal training specifically aimed at the half outside of a few longer runs.  Would like to run a 1:45 which roughly translates to a 3:45 marathon based on the calculators, slow progression to a BQ time when I decide to get serious about it.

Bike bag typically contains an extra tube, flat kit (CO2 inflator, 2 cartridges, 2 tire levers, happen to have 2 allen wrenches in there as well, patch kit, a few extra segments of tire to cover any punctures or tears in the tire) normally also have 5-10 bucks stashed away and my cell phone.

LOL! Not racing - I'm still lurking around here though. I think I've given up trying to catch up.  My bad. :-(  I'm going to try to catch up soon. This quarter is nuts compared to last quarter, especially now that I have added responsibilities for school.  I've been trying my very best to keep up with training, which I have (aside from two skipped swims within 3 weeks...can't you tell, I am starting to get bored with swimming. LOL!).

Anyways - off my soapbox.

Bike Jersey - my cleat covers. I already ruined my first one within 6 months because I didn't cover them, so this time I learned my lesson. Other than that, I don't like anything else on my back. Few times I just wear a tank top (it's HOT to wear my Jersey!), so no pockets.  No food as it goes in my bento box. I used to carry food there, but then I found it's actually more hassle than what it is worth.

Bike bag - credit card, DL, cash, a spare tube (duuuuuuuuuh?), CO2 micro-adjuster pump, CO2, tire levers, patch kit, and my car key.

What I *wish* I had room for: my iPhone 4 (just got it a few days ago). But I don't trust myself with my phone while riding.

FINALLY...I am racing this weekend....Bridgeland Sprint tri in Houston.  Been almost 2 months since I had a race.

I carry the usual tire change supplies in a bag under the seat.  Depending on the ride length, I carry my cell phone and nutrition in the pockets of my jersey.

No racing. Sweltering my @$$ off in Arizona... Well, it's actually very A/C'ed here, but it's hot outside!! Funny, the highs in WA this week are right around 70. The lows in AZ this week are right around 85.

Aside from the usual (tube, pump, etc.) my most important tool is my cell phone. It can bail me out -- I always make sure there is someone I can call (if hubs is out of town, I make sure friends are around just in case). It's also bailed me out when I needed to buy a new tire during a ride and hubby was able to give me credit card info over the phone. When I remember I carry credit card as well...

Good luck to the weekend racers! Wow! There are lots of you so far. Yay!!

Got another run in last night. My left shin is driving me crazy, every run it just burns non-stop. Regardless of how much I stretch before. I could go 10x faster if it didnt burn the whole time. I am still hoping to get the zensah sleeves, hopefully they help. Any tips?

great job Suzy!  I don't know how you can stand to swim that long in the pool.  That is my biggest obstacle to taking the IM plunge.

Mark- other than stretching, do you do any warm ups? I like doing about 5-10 minutes of high knees, skipping, butt kicks, side skips, walking on toes, walking on heels, walking on inside of feet, then outsides, before I start running. I also like my first mile to start off slow, so my body can ease into a harder effort. In addition, there are some great exercises you can do at home like toe taps, that I think have kept my shin splints away. They seem kind of silly to do, but try doing 50 on each side. You will feel a burn in your shins. You Want that! It gets easier as you keep it up. Sleeves are helpful to me for recovery. I don't use them while running, but I know Suzy does, so maybe she can chime in.Good luck, nice job getting out there!

It's possible that you are overstriding when you are running.  Everytime you do this, your shin acts like a brake and takes a lot of excess pressure, thus the pain.  My first suggestion would be to do some light stretching beforehand and afterwards.  Take the toe and put it against the wall and lightly stretch the anterior area of both shins.  You can also do the same by bring your toes towards you....follow it up with adequate stretching of the calves.   I suggest you ice the area that is affected post workout as well. I also suggest you consider increasing your turn over and reducing your stride length a little at a time to see if that helps.

I do wear compression sleeves while biking and running.  I do it to keep my calves from getting super tight.  Seem to work, but they are not a replacement for stretching and good biomechanics.

Good luck, Suzy!

Not racing...but just signed up last night for a "swim a mile for women with cancer" event to be held in October.  My piano teacher of all people called me last night and asked me to do it with her, she was so excited, how could I refuse???  She somehow thinks I am a great swimmer because I do triathlons.  Hmm.  I'm looking forward to doing a fun swim for a good cause!

I've never done a fundraising event, other than walkathons when I was younger, so it should be lots of fun.  Heated outdoor pool at a local college.

My bike bag (under seat) has my bike tool (allen wrench/screwdriver thingy), 2 tubes, tire levers, extra C02 cartridge...my little pump is on the Xlab rear bottle holder.  My bento box has my credit card, a $20 bill, my cell phone and gu chomps.  My jersey usually has just my arm warmers since I am generally cold to start out, but really hate wearing a windbreaker or longsleeves if I get too hot.

Btw, I was in Long Beach this weekend for my partner's Dragon Boat races and I saw tons of triathletes walking around in all of their spandex...even just walking their dogs and having a picnic (in tri clothes!).  It was kind of odd, I know there was a race that weekend, but don't most of you guys change as soon as possible?  Just wondering.  Actually, it was super odd!    I felt guilty by association!   Surprised

While I'm not racing I am going through withdrawals since my last one was before I moved. I keep reminding myself that this will only make me stronger! Good luck and have fun to all of you who are racing!!!

What do I carry? In my bike bag I carry all things necessary to change a flat (which thank goodness as I have had to use it several times lately!!), patch kit, an allen wrench thingy (yup, that's a technical term in my mind ), and in my jersey I always carry my cell phone and nutrition!

I have been stretching quite a bit. I will try to shorten my stride, it is pretty short right now for me. I wish I could warmup but by even taking a mile as slow as I can the muscles in my left shin are on fire. It is worse onthe road, I will take the advice and see what I can do. Probably not much tonight considering that power and terrible storms are hitting all over town.

Are they sore or do they hurt(ie. pain)?  Two totally different things in my mind. Shin Splints? Or could be a poor foot strike. Orthotics needed? Or just sore tight muscles.
