Quickie check-in:

Pickle juice...Evidently it's the "secret" Gatorade doesn't want anyone to know about. I save the juice jars for DH, but haven't been able to bring myself to drink it straight yet. After a tequila shot, though??? Yep, THAT I could do.  Cool

Sophomoric humor is alive and well in Manatee Land... just ask Darren about his dp education a few months ago. LOL

It does take some time for your body to adjust. Might be you want to tweak other things in your diet before race and then hit it full on after. Anyone in the Nutrition thread tried to make big change with big race on deck?

I have found that it is a bad idea for me to try and lose weight while training for a race.  If it happens, great, but I save my weight loss for the off season.  My body can't handle the stresses of hard/long training and weight loss at the same time and I end up injured.

So I didn't get my ride in this morning because I had to get ready for court. Sentencing went well. (oh BTW I'm a federal criminal investigator so I'm on the prosecution side, not the one being sentenced) I got home and finished up some emails then headed out for an easy ride with Fi. As soon as I walk outside I hear a clap of thunder and see thisYell:

Did I brag to you yet about how I had a mitigation hearing for my parking ticket by mail (drawing a very cute little diagram and everything) and got the whole thing dismissed (which doesn't usually happen in mitigation.)

I've been sure to try and brag to allll my lawyer friends Smile

We totally had threatening clouds like that during track practice yesterday. It never did full on rain though, there was just this odd tension. I halfway just wanted it to pour. It's been pretty much in the 80s here lately.

Congrats on the parking ticket. Nice that you had to "draw them a picture" Laughing

I like running in the rain. I would have enjoyed running the race that was cancelled a couple weeks ago but the concern there was the lightning.

We've had some inSANE monsoons this year. It's funny that monsoon season interrupts training more than winter does Surprised

I guess I could drag out the drainer but I haven't seen that torture device since before Oceanside! Fi has never been on it and I'd have to swap out her skewer. Nah. I'll do a quickie ride Saturday before the race (which is Sunday).

At practice last night our coach revealed that we will be running a workout he calls "Madrona Hills" on Saturday

Apparently we will be starting at the base and running up the hill about 45 seconds below our threshold pace. The hill is something like 1.6 miles long with 5 or 6% grade I think? We get to the top, rest for a minute (I think?) then jog down slowly.

Someone asked, "How many reps? Or is it just one?" and he responded, "Oh. If you just did one you would walk away from doing the workout saying, boy that sure sucked. You will do 3. Because when you do 3, in this case, the first one doesn't matter because you have 2 more, the second one will be very hard and the third, you will just be trying to breathe."

LOL! I just love when someone forces him to explain things like that.

So, back to pickles...

Anyone who has had pickle juice post workout, is it something you would possibly use during a long ride/run or only after?

What about eating pickles if drinking the juice is Yell? Just not the same concentration, I'm guessing.

hahaha...ouch!  Was his response drawn out, full of pregnant pauses and complete with a sadistic laugh at the end? You know, since he was describing the torture of the day Sealed

I always enjoy hearing that a sentencing went well.  I guess I'm biased   Sorry your ride was a no go, summers in Florida mean afternoon-evening thunderstorms which is one of the reasons my weekday bikes are on the trainer.

To answer the what do the manatees do question: I am an attorney for a law enforcement agency.

More than a few have found that. They aren't entirely mutually exclusive, but it works much better if the concentration is more on one or the other.

My kids used to eat "pickle-cicles" -- frozen pickle juice on a stick. They wouldn't work on a ride, but for recovery. Freezing the juice might make them more palatable.

Sorry for the total Newb question, but what is the difference between the two skewers and why do you need to change them? The one on my bike and trainer look and feel almost identical. I changed it anyway cause that is what I was told to do but no-one explained why.

Weighing in (pun intended) - whilst calorie in calorie out is effective it also is not very easy to maintain and lots of folk end up gaining back the weight when they stop starving themselves of calories.

Now as you ALL know I'm on a strictly no sugar no grains lifestyle.  I've not touched chocolate or pasta or pizza or bread for nine weeks - I'm down 15lbs.  And it's easy.

It is very similar to paleo - and once you adapt to burning fat for fuel over glycogen and carbs it's fine, but it does take a while to adapt.

I am not going to force anyone to do what I do or believe what i believe - but keep an open mind.  I have tried every diet known to man and this is the first time I've adapted a 'lifestyle change' and it's worked and it's easy.

Oh how do I finance triathlon - well I'm in an office job - retail planner.  Dull but hey.  And for free I write newsletters for Macca and Vinnie Tortorich.  And most recently I have been given the title Podcast manager for Macca.  I'm hoping that all turns into paid employment soon enough and i'll ditch the office job.

Oh and just for Skrat - Yanti - I hope you stop by in December for a shoulder nibble.

It's possible they're about the same, but not that likely as the trainer skewer is built to handle being compressed by holding mechanism of the trainer. The road skewer wasn't likely designed to handle the forces added on out there. Could have some less sturdy material there. My one brother had an old road bike with a skewer like the trainer one, but none of the newer ones between any of us do.

Yeah, it's in making it a lifestyle change as opposed to having a starting and stopping point. So finding a balance of calories in calories out that one can keep on going with. It can also help to figure out what and when to eat various things so that you feel full or satisfied more often or longer. Then the hunger feeling won't come on as much which means you might eat a bit less.
