1. Is this your first IM?
Yes, LP will be my first IM.  In fact, it will likely only be my third triathlon.  I did my first tri in August of '10 and plan on doing one more before Placid.  Maybeee two.

2. Have you done LP before?
Obviously not.

3. What are your goals for the 2010 race?
Cross the finish line sub 17 hours?  Finishing with some daylight would be sweet, but I wont make any predictions just yet.

4.How/Why did you select the Lake Placid Race?
It's within driving distance, 6 - 6.5 hours.  I'm from right outside of Philly in Southern NJ.  Also, I think Placid is one of the more interesting and tougher IM races so it makes it that much more interesting.  Volunteering 2010's race was the first triathlon I ever witnessed and knew I'd be hooked once I saw the course.  It certainly happened as planned!  Another reason = I like high speeds on my bike Smile!

5. Do you have any specific questions that you wish addressed about LP (the race, training etc)
How screwed I am that I don't have a place to stay yet?  Seriously, I think that's actually the biggest stress of the race for me right now.  I volunteered last year's race so I saw a goood portion of the course throughout the race-day.  Walked approx 20 miles.  I think that experience was invaluable to get a feel for the environment during IM weekend.  Meeting and talking to a lot of the participants was great.

Good luck everyone in their training!

Brian

Hi Brian - welcome aboard! I have never done or even been to LP before, so I can't answer your question about how difficult it is to find a place to stay - others will chime in with their experience.
Happy training - only 183 days!

Brian there are two good times to find lodging...first is right after we signed up for the race, then around the time you can drop out and get your $175 back so folks back out of their housing/lodging reservations and they open up again.

We booked a condo in September or October.

Depends on your budget, what kind of place you want and how close you want to stay how available things are.

You could do a vbro search to see if you can find anything.

Be patient and you will find something. If you can find something now that doesn't have a cancellation penalty maybe find a place farther from town then look again in May/June for something closer.

LP was my first IM back in 2008...great race, great fans, great venue, hopefully it won't rain all day on July 24th!

Just had a great call with Infinit and we customized two formulas - bike and run.  The woman there knew her stuff and explained why the formulas are ideally different in content (i.e. protein on the bike to control hunger, but not on the run ... caffeine added to the run, etc...).  It was a great personalized call and I feel better that it was tailored to me based on height/weight/sweat rate, etc... (you have to "order" the free call online first).  It will also give me time to tweak it as I train between now and July.

Also found a discount code online "endurancehealth" that gives 10% off - tried it and it worked!  I had tried some Powerbar Endurance formula in the interim and it tastes WAY too strong ... like Kool Aid that has spoiled or something... I miss my Infinit!

Ryan, I live in Westminster but work in Bethesda/Potomac. Would be happy to meet halfway on some weekends when it warms up, know of a great ride out of the Potomac area.

Hi IMLP peeps - hope everyone's training is going well - I only recently realized that my logs were private except to friends - I just made them public to all...

Quick question:
some of my training mates are getting pretty serious about signing up for Savageman - any of you veterans ever done both IMLP & SM in the same season? They are about 8 weeks apart; plenty of time, right?
Undecided

I've done Savageman the last 2 years, it's a race worth doing. Not a pr kind of course, just go and have a great time. The race is well run and quite the experience. The climbs are relentless.

I believe Tasr and Pennstate both did Savageman after LP - and with great success at both, I might add.

Take the BT annual survey -- when you finish you get a coupon code for 20% off (I love Inifinit too -- just make sure you run off the bike in trianing to see how the protein in the bike formula affects your stomach.  I had to remove the protein because it was causing GI issues on the run).

Good advice! We added the protein to the mix since it helps with hunger on the bike, but it is dialed pretty low so it doesn't account for many calories. Almost all of my weekend long rides from here on out involve a brick run afterwards and I have a couple of olympics and half IM as part of my training schedule, so I should have time to work out any nutrition kinks. This is by far the longest race/event I've done in my life! I feel confident in my training plan and progress, but the nutrition part still scares the heck out of me since I read all of the stories and posts about how even the most experienced endurance racers get it wrong sometimes

Great to have you Brett and also Brian!  I am so with you Brett about the nutrition thing... freaky! I am thinking I am going to prefer to eat things like PB and J but will really have to experiment with this! Kate

That infinit idea sounds pretty good.

I've had luck training with Sustained Energy and Perpetuem from Hammer Nutrition.  Pretty easy to load up a concentrated mix and mix some other stuff off the course with it for additional calories.

My coach likes Carbopro and you can make a pretty concentrated bottle of that.  Haven't tried it yet but planning on it...  Plenty of time to experience.  It's good you're thinking of that now.

Check out a couple of the threads on slowtwitich from Brian at BPN...he's highlighted the nutrition plan on the IMFL winner and then Rappstar at Arizona this year...pretty interesting stuff.

If you go with Carbopro you can use bulk Maltodextrin for about 10-20% of the cost. You can custom make your drink similar to infinite adding electrolytes, flavoring, carbs to get the exact blend for you super cheap. 55# of maltodextrin is about $55. You can find smaller amount containers at home brew shops.

I used home made drink for IM Canada. Issue with any drink or food that you bring that isn't on the course if you loose it or something happens you are somewhat screwed. If you train and race with what's on the course you can always get more and it makes nutrition simpler.

and at IMLP, living off the course will make you lighter, for what it is worth! Laughing

My current plan is to live off the course - but will certainly train for it first. If I decide to sherpa my own nutrition, I will also plan to have plenty extra of what I need - one of the worst decisions I made years ago in a HIM was to not stop to pick up my electrolytes that I dropped near the beginning of the bike leg. 5 minutes lost there would most likely have saved me 30 minutes on a full-blown crampy run/walk...

I fully intend to live off the course...

On training rides it's just not practical to be drinking Ironman Perform and taking 10 GUs all the time.  Perform is too diluted so you can't get enough calories.  I don't stop so want something to get me through...that's when I drink the other stuff.  In a race I will travel as light as I can.

I can see how some people have GI issues they worry about so need to practice.  Fortunately I've never had that (knocks on wood) so that doesn't really concern me as much as having to interrupt my training rides by stopping for frequent refills.

Agree with you 100%. I have a pretty solid stomach, but that Ironman drink just makes me nauseous. I will most likely concentrate my mixes and have plenty extra at special needs so I can supplement with water from the aid stations with a few squirts of Infinit (it concentrates very well). Gels work great for me but at only 100 calories I don't want to be pumping down that many... Plus, I can pretty much guarantee the additional pound or two on my bike wont gravely affect my time lol. I also do my longer runs with a 4 bottle fuel belt so when the weather gets warmer I can carry enough with me for longer loops. If I race with less, I'll feel lighter!

What flavor Ironman drink do they carry on the course? I didn't like it at first but I am almost through my first cannister and I think I'm getting used to it. I think I mixed the first batch too weak.

The other thing I noticed is that it doesnt mix well, it separates a lot so I have to shake the bottle, which might not work well with an aero drink - and I have never had a problem with Gatorade powder doing that.

I did order a bento box bag this week. I made sure it is large enough to carry one Chipotle burrito which will be the key to my success on race day.

Haha. I just checked the weather up there today out of curiousity.

Currently it is sunny and the temperature is -15 degrees F. The forecast for today is "Mostly sunny with temperatures warming into the low to middle single digits"

I'm glad we have a full 6 months for the weather to improve a bit!
