Veteran 241 | Subject: RE: Ironman U.S. Championship : Official Thread Damn there is a lot of negativity going on this thread. Looking at the weather, they say scattered showers only because of high humidity levels. One storm could pop up within a 20 mile radius and they will still say "chance of scattered showers". If it does shower, especially during the bike leg, It will probably feel refreshing and could bring down the humidity. As for the poopy water, the hudson is a huge river with constant currents. It will be long gone by Saturday!! Think Positive people...stay focused only on the things in your control. Sleep, nutrition, rest, pacing... |

Am I just being self absorbed or is there a complete lack of communication here? This is insane. How can they ask us to swim in sewage waste? Thats completely disgusting. I don't that this was planned. "The discharge is taking place so that repairs can be made to the damaged line, which broke about 3 p.m. Wednesday" |

Master 2158 | Subject: RE: Ironman U.S. Championship : Official Thread Aside from needing to be careful on the bike, I would think that rain would be a good thing during the race. With any luck, the front will push through a little faster and we will also get a break in the humidity. As for the water...I am sure they will be testing for bacteria and nasty stuff. It is what it is. Not much they can do about a break. I hope we do get to swim though, I was looking forward to it. |

Master 1989 New Jersey | Subject: RE: Ironman U.S. Championship : Official Thread We got time to see if this sewage thing will have any effect but things under our control are to prepare for the unexpected. So I hope officials offer up news on their contingency plans so we can figure out our plan. Cancel the swim? Can't see any other alternatives. Do they add a run before the bike? Seems logistically difficult. Oh well...let's hope for the best. |

Master 2468 Muskego, Wisconsin | Subject: RE: Ironman U.S. Championship : Official Thread I'm not being negative, I think it's funny. I might be one of the few who is hoping for no currents and warmer weather. I've done these things a few time, no worries here. Heck, in Japan 2009 they were going to shut down the island due to hoof and mouth disease. These things come with the territory. |

Member 12 | Subject: RE: Ironman U.S. Championship : Official Thread I must admit. I am VERY negative and VERY upset. This will be my second Ironman event ever. The first one was the 2012 New-Orleans 70.3 . They canceled the swim there as well. I am sick of this, seriously. Leave aside the many thousands of $ I spent here, this is just depressing. Two Ironman events and both duathlons? I want my money back. |

So this swim is officially canceled Sat? And signing up for NOLA 70.3 did you really think the swim would go on? |

60 | Subject: RE: Ironman U.S. Championship : Official Thread New York Ironman Triathlon May Cancel Hudson Swim Due to Sewage 2012-08-09 15:02:45.649 GMT By Erik Matuszewski Aug. 9 (Bloomberg) -- The swim portion of the first New York City Ironman triathlon on Aug. 11 may be canceled due to a sewer-line break that will lead to the discharge of millions of gallons of raw sewage into the Hudson River. Organizers for the 140.6-mile (226-kilometer) triathlon, which combines swimming, cycling and running, said they’re monitoring the water quality and direction of the current in the river. A decision on whether the race is shortened to the bike and run portions would be made by tomorrow at the latest, race organizer John Korff said. “We’re not messing with water quality,” Korff said in a telephone interview. “It is what it is -- it’s either yes or no. It depends which way the water is flowing. Athletes will know at least the day before.” There will be a controlled discharge of several million gallons of chlorinated raw sewage into the Hudson River at Sleepy Hollow overnight due to the sewer break in Tarrytown, New York, the Westchester County Department of Health said in a statement. The treated sewage bypass is needed so that repairs can be made to the line. The health department is advising people who use the Hudson River waters for recreational purposes, namely swimmers, boaters, kayakers and windsurfers, to “avoid direct contact with the water from Croton Point Park and points south until further notice.” Sleepy Hollow is about 20 miles north of the George Washington Bridge, which is near the finish line for the 2.4 mile swim leg of the Ironman triathlon. 500 Million Gallons Two years ago, a fire at a sewage-treatment plant led to almost 500 million gallons of waste being dumped into the Hudson River two weeks before the annual Olympic-length triathlon in New York. The race was held as scheduled that year. “The Hudson was flowing north,” Korff said. “The Hudson is tidal, so you just don’t know.” The Ironman race is scheduled to begin with the 2.4-mile swim leg, with competitors taking ferry boats to a fixed barge for the start in the river. “Because of the way we start the swim, with everyone on these water ferries, we’re not going to take people up to swim start if there’s not going to be a swim. That would be absurd,” Korff said. “And we’re not going to decide that morning, that would be even more ridiculous.” If the swim isn’t held, competitors would start with a 112- mile ride on the closed Palisades Interstate Parkway in New Jersey and New York before finishing with a 26.2-mile run. “We don’t want to keep anybody hanging,” Korff said. “Then everybody is wondering, ‘What do I do?’ and nobody sleeps and everybody has a rotten day.” For Related News and Information: Top Sports Stories: USPO --With assistance from Mike Buteau in Atlanta. In reading the map, it looks like the turnaround is at the top of the hill, but the bags are at the bottom? This can't be right can it? In lake placid you rode right past your bags. Will we be doing the same here or do you have to ride back down Dyckman hill to get them? Im just trying to figure out how to pack my fuel. |

I think your question is regarding the bike special needs station, but in case, here's the complete setup. 1. T1 - Swim to Bike - At Ross Dock. You get your bike gear here and bike up a steep, short hill that leads to a traffic circle (the mile 7 run turnaround & run special needs station). You then continue up a longer hill that takes you to the Palisades. 2. Bike special needs - this should be somewhere near the mile 56 turnaround. It'll be on the Palisades parkway. A volunteer truck will take your special needs bags from Ross Dock to the special needs station. 3. T2 - Bike to Run - At Ross Dock. You change into your run gear, run up that steep short hill going south and then turn going north at the traffic circle. 4. Run special needs - Mile 7 & 14 traffic circle Hope that helps.
