I agree, they're not going to be for everyone. Running warehouse has them and since they have free shipping and free returns I recommend buying from them if you go the online route.

I wouldn't mind trying them - but it's a fairly large sum of money to throw down just to try the newest thing on the block, so I might just go the Running Warehouse route - thanks Hands-Marie!

For ME, I wouldn't mind giving them a whirl because after 2 reconstructive knee surgeries, breaking my back twice, having spondololisthesis and sciatica... I'm not so sure that my pain while running (or doing anything, really) is a result of poor mechanics.  As many have said, what works for one person won't work for others - but if I can find a way to actually do something pain-free, I'm willing to give it a whirl!

I was going to say "baring any medical issues"...

In many cases - special footwear may help the runner who experiences a lot of pain.

That is an awful lot of injuries.  Sorry to hear about that.  How did you break your back twice and what the heck is spondololisthesis and sciatica?

Yeah, I'm a bit of a mess - but that's fine, I'm used to it by now.

First time I broke my back I was 12/13 years old at gymnastics practice and doing handstands on a set of uneven parallel bars when the cables holding the bars up snapped and I landed on my back on a mini rebounder trampoline that had been bolted into the ground.  That's the one that caused my spondy and sciatica:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spondylolisthesis  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sciatica

The second time was in 2006 while snowboarding up on Whistler and I got cut off by a kid that was out of control, caught my heel edge and got tossed into the trees.  Thankfully I have no recollection of the trip down the mountain on the spine-board, and was given fantastic drugs while in the hospital recovering!

Does anyone else ever get a massive amount of sleepies (aka eye boogers) after a really tough ride and / or run brick?

After my long run, long ride, or long brick days my eyes seem to go into overdrive on making eye boogers.  My eyes also get very heavy and hard to keep open.  I know that I need to take a nap - and sometimes I do.  But sometimes I can't sleep, so I will sit and rest in my recliner while watching a little TV for about an hour.

The other day this happened, after I had an exceptionally tough ride / run combo.  Since I couldn't sleep, I decided to take an ice bath.  While sitting there in the cold water - I tried to read, but my vision was so blurry I could hardly read.  I had to keep blinking and picking eye boogers.

Anyone else every have anything similar happen?

Nah you're a freak lol

Yeah, that's just weird.

That's what I thought....

Anyone Else?  Someone surely has massive eye booger output that makes their vision blurry after a hard workout.

If not - I say you are not working hard enough!

Nope you are just weird. Do you wear decent sunnies or glasses when you ride and run? It could be that you are getting a fair bit of grit in your eyes and this is what is causing it.

I'm weird too. I get camel boogers, upper lip crust, gel/sugar/salt crust in the corners of my lips, crap coming out of my eyes, etc. I do wipe my face a lot when working out and (YUMMMMM) can lick my upper lip and nostrils clean, so that helps, but it's still an impressive accumulation.

By the way SKRAT ... a ride OR a run should be tough. Not a combo. If the ride is crazy, then the most should be an easy transition (15-30min) run after, not that I've ever seen you run easy. If the run is crazy, then a short (30-40 min) warmup spin before should be it.

I seem to have one speed..  I can't help it.

Just to clarify, when I say "hard run" - I mean that it hurt like hell because I rode 50 miles before my 7 mile run.  I did not mean that I ran "hard".

I do not mess with intervals, fartleks, sprints, speed days or the like.  I pretty much just always run at about an 8:30 to 8:45 pace while training.  It doesn't matter if it's 10 miles or 5 miles... I always seem to run that pace (without trying to).

Sometimes that pace is way "harder" than other times - but my legs just always carry me at that pace.  Is that a problem?

I do notice that when the legs hurt, I shorten my stride and pick up my cadence.  When they feel good, I tend to run with a longer stride, but at a shorter cadence.

OK  - time for a training related post that's not about eye boogers.

A little while back - someone (I can't remember who) posted that you should do bricks once in a while but to not go crazy with them.

Why not?

In my training plan - I have 3 days per week that have both rides AND runs scheduled.  I do every single one of those days as a brick.

Weekly looks like this:

Monday - Medium bike - I usually push this bike ride pretty hard as the legs are fresh and it's a bike ONLY day.

Tuesday - Short bike - Long run (Brick) I do this as an "easy" ride.

Wednesday - Off (to rest & recover from long run)

Thursday - Medium Bike - Short Run (Brick) I usually ride this pretty hard (hard means high cadence up hills - push it.. slightly higher heart rate)

Friday - Swim - Run (I often skip this swim day)

Saturday - Long Bike - Medium Run (Brick) I try to simulate race conditions on this day - push the bike a bit hard, see what's left in the tank for the run.

Sunday - Swim only - (to rest my legs)

so from this you normally do 1 swim session (you have 2 listed but you say often skip one of them), 4 bike sessions and 4 run sessions a week? You have a fairly solid swim background don't you, do you find that 1 swim session is enough?

Sorry I don't have any answers or advice for you just questions.

Sorry I have been absent.  I am in the middle of a pity party.

Injured again. Cry  Running and MCM training was going so good.  I felt like I was back to 80% of where I was a year ago.  Not any more.  CryCryCry

Tried running yesterday and it scared me.  I went from 0 to 10 on my pain in 0.39 miles.   I had pushed it to 1.2 miles on Sunday so I was hopeful I was on the mend.  I went to the sports med doc finally to rule out a stress fx (mostly because I was scared that if it was fractured I'd do more damage and end up with pins).  He did not see a stress fx on plain x-ray but diagnosed it as tensor fascia strain with hip flexor and IS inflammation.   He did some balance testing and I failed totally.  Physical therapy 3x/week for 4-6 weeks.  No running.

Bricks are harder on you than doing these as separate workouts. If you need to do this for scheduling purposes, then go right ahead as it's better to get it in than not so long as you're not doing too much overall.

Subject: RE: Mad Manatee Mentors 2013: CLOSED (exc/ Pop Tart bribes)

I have a couple questions for someone else, really just to run a couple things by the group here. My sister is going to run her first event this weekend (a sprint) and is nothing like me, going to just complete and will likely be more in the back of the pack. I'm actually the same size as say Jesse Thomas. She's similar to but still smaller than someone like Lauren Goss, or maybe Jesse's wife Lauren Fleshman. The two questions come in for the warm-up. Normally I would be all for getting into the water some to get going. The water itself should be fine, but air temps at the time are likely to be in the mid-50's. Her wave is also 35 minutes after the first, so would be 40 minutes or more of being wet in those temps.

I'm actually thinking of having her skip warming up in the water and doing things on land. She did gymnastics as a kid and maintains some activities, so between that and what I know, should have her ready to go there. Then get as wet as possible while walking in to start to get past the shock of being wet at that point (water is expected to be nice). Waiting a bit for that to wear off if necessary before diving in to start swimming. My concern with getting into the water is even with having warmer stuff to put on after getting into the water, she'll still be wet in colder air temps. I notice this in these kind of temps and she's substantially smaller than I am, so it can take more out of her. Potentially a lot more. She can be tough when needed and has dealt with colder water then she'll see and colder air temps growing up, I'd still rather put her in the best position to get through this. I know better than to guess at a girl's weight, but she really is close to as trim as the two Lauren's mentioned. I know what to wear on the bike, but wanted second opinions on the swim approach as it's a different world for her having so much less mass than I do. She'll have warm stuff to wear, but it's just different being wet for so long even with that available, so I'd rather avoid that for as long as possible.

Also thinking of the safest thing to have for nutrition. And that is confirming what tends to safest for people to try in general, not ideas to try as I know of a bazillion things to use. She didn't think of that at all in training as sessions were short, but I'm guessing this will take in the neighborhood of 1:45 with more potential to go over than under. Generally she can eat anything I can plus more. Powerbar comes to mind as it's easy to find and does work ok for me. A gel or bar she likes the flavor of could tape to the bike and just peel off as necessary. She doesn't have pockets and I don't want to confuse her any more with various bike pouches (yeah, she's really not like me).

I know none of this is really ideal, but she tends to wing it a lot more than I do, somehow seems to get just enough direction to avoid disasters.
