Nice time on your HIM sim!  Nothing crazy to report here - just an Olympic tri today and Boston next week.  Then it will finally be time to focus on CDA!  I hope it's not too soon to do a 70.3 in August.  I'm looking into either Timberman or Lake Stevens.  But this will be my first full Iron, so I have no idea what to expect for recovery.

This will be my second, and two months after CDA last year I felt pretty good - so we will see!

If you get a chance to do Lake Stevens, you definitely should. I am actually from WA and went to school in Seattle (Lake Stevens is only a bit North of Seattle). It is an awesome area and I have been wanting to do that for a few summers now. There is always something that conflicts with the race date - this year it is my wedding ...which is fine!

"Just" an olympic and Boston huh? Man oh man, how the mindset can change over time. Good luck with those, let us know how they turn out.

Well, the Olympic went alright, I guess.  I had hoped to be between 2:10-2:15, but finished in 2:18.  Still struggling with visibility late in the swim - had to stop and take a look a couple of times and get back on track (have been trying Sable Water Optics goggles and they fog up on me, too).  I definitely need to figure this out before CDA!  Also took time in T2 to put on socks and lace up Asics since Boston is next week.  I definitely didn't want to risk foot issues with Newtons / no socks.

There was wind to deal with on both the bike and run so it was a slow day across the board.  We had a 2-mile sand stretch to start the run, then after the turnaround we fought the wind along the coast the whole way back.  I'm just glad I wasn't doing the half!  The oly is the SuperSeal and most of the SuperFrog half marathon is on the sand.  That would have made for a very tough day - not to mention their swim was in the open ocean and there some pretty big (4-5') sets rolling in.  The half is a two-loop swim, so there's a good chance you're gonna get hammered during one (if not both) of the entries.  We started at 9:00 (on the bay side), so we got to watch pretty much the whole Frog swim before heading over to calmer waters.

I ended up 4th in AG, so I can't really complain - especially 2 weeks after Oceanside and while tapering for Boston.  This was really just an afterthought race, a way to get in a good workout and race with some friends here in town.  Still, it was a bit of a bummer to barely miss out on the podium (again!).  It wasn't all that close, actually.  In fact, I just barely squeeked past another AGer down the homestretch.  I thought it might have been for a podium spot, so I really tried to push it.  Turns out it was just for 4th.  The top 3 were all several minutes faster.

And, ya - Lake Stevens is an awesome race.  I did it for the first time last year and loved it.  It's not an easy course, for sure, but the swim is nice.  There are just continuous rolling hills to deal with on the bike and the run is not flat.  I'm leaning towards going back as Timberman would be quite a journey (and I like the idea of comparing times from the year before).

Anyone else considering making the trip to Lake Stevens after CDA?

IM recovery is different for everyone.  I normally find that I can have a good workout a few weeks post-IM, but then the next day I feel sluggish.  It seems to take about 4 to 6 weeks before I am able to link several days of good work out together.

I have my first 100 miler in the books.  Not bad at all with the exception of the hotspot in the saddle-- if you know what I mean.  More Glide next time I guess.  The bad news is that it will soon be time to pull out the thin tri-shorts.  The ride was great with 18.69 MPH average followed by a 4 mile run at 7:29 pace.

Thanks for all of the feedback regarding the aero bottles and nutrition, etc…  Duct Tape, Velcro, Electrical Tap, zip ties, Bungees, etc…   It sounds like a lot of interesting contraptions!  I will have to give a few of them a shot.  However, I think I found my solution, the SpeedFil bottle.  After multiple rides, including the 100 miler, I must say I am really happy with it.

Good luck to the few of you doing Boston (Mike, Velcro Mom, and ???)!  I am in the process of making my hotel reservations for next year.  I can't wait!

I agree, I think everyone is different.  Genetics, nutrition, rest, your overall physical condition play very big roles.  Another rule of thumb I have heard for running is that you should have a rest day for every "race" mile you run (i.e. 13.1 mile race equals 13 days off, or pretty light days).  I am not sure what that means in regards to combining swim, bike, run over the Ironman distance.  However, again I think everyone is different in recovery speed.

My training plan calls for a visit to the sports doc with the hope of possibly walking the mary to avoid a DNS due to my lovely calf issues.  Kinda taking the wind out of the enthusiasm, big time.  A full week off of running did not result in any gains on the pull.

Oh no- sorry to hear about your injury.  Have you tried aqua jogging?  I've known a few people to aqua jog through IM training and had decent IM run times.  It's always an option but hopefully you'll heal up soon!

Hi Everyone. IMCDA will be my first full.  I have done 5 70.3s, but the jump to a full is scaring me!  I am doing the "beginner triathlete" program posted on this site, so hopefully will be ready.

Is anyone here planning to go to the multisport training camp in CDA in two weeks?

TriSeattle -

Lake Stevens is my favorite 70.3!  It is so beautiful!  It is the hardest run of the halfs I have done (St. Croix, Oceanside, Austin, Lake Stevens), but still the best race.  The swim is especially great if you have trouble siting like I do. There is an underwater cable that you can literally follow the entire race (though it does run into the dock at the end!).  Maybe a great way to celebrate your first anniversary!

I opted for the CompuTrainer as well.  Maybe next year I'll take advantage of one of their camps in Encinitas.

And Baowolf - noooo!  Sorry to hear about the calf issues.  Hope you can work it out in time to get comfortable on the run.  After Boston, my running legs will be on the shelf for quite a while, too.  Hopefully we'll both be able to get back at it before too long and survive / shuffle through the marathon in CDA.  Good luck with the trip to the sports doc.  Hope it helps!

Brandi (I'm guessing) -

Yes, a one year anniversary race...that sounds like a great idea. I'm not sure the other half will be so much excited about that, but its worth a shot!

I have never done the multisport training camp, but lastyear before CDA Ironman there were a few people that I knew that did it and absolutely loved it. I actually don't know how their times/experiences turned out (with the actual race), but from the sounds of it, they were a lot more prepared.

Just read Andy Potts is racing IMCDA with us! How cool - Andy is a class act.

I am racing at Escape From Alcatraz in a few weeks and Andy Potts will be there defending his title, going for FOUR IN A ROW there!

I feel your pain. The anxiety that goes along with having an injury during an IM build up can be worse than the injury itself.

I ran a total of only 13 miles last month due to injury. I finally had to take 19 days completely off running. I am just now starting to build up again. It gave me plenty of time to build up the bike. So maybe you can focus on swim/bike for now and hopefully be running again soon.

Hang in there!

Yep!  I had to take an unplanned rest day yesterday.  It was my first day off in 3 weeks and I could tell I was well overdue.

Make sure to hydrate, take in a lot of protein, and sleep!  I always noticed a difference when I drink a protein shake once or twice a day.

Also try napping whenever you have time.  Even if it's a short nap it will still help.  Sometimes after work I'll take a 20-30 nap and then get up to do my evening workout and always end up feeling better after getting a quick nap!  Although it would be perfect timing to get in an afternoon nap ar work, but that's obvously impossible.

I've been a little fatigued recently too.  Volume has gone up the last two weeks so I've been eating non-stop which has helped.  The good side is I'm feeling noticably stronger in all sports.

Body still wants more sleep.  Haven't missed any workouts but have been getting to work a little later than planned trying to get a few more mins of shut eye.

Hey, triseattle, are you in Seattle or SLC?  I am in SLC.

Everyone else.  I am seriously exhausted.  It's Friday night and I am planning on going to bed no later than 8:30.  Sad and lame all at the same time!

Brandi - I am actually currently in Colorado, but moving to SLC in about 3 weeks. I went to college in Seattle and during that time period is when I created my profile on here . I know, I've been all over. My profile picture is from when I lived in Hawaii! Are there a lot of good places to get a few 100+ mile rides in when I move???

Hey, its 7:45 here right now and I'm thinking about heading to bed soon. I also have given myself an extra 2 days off in the last 10 days, because of feeling overly tired. Hopefully giving myself that break will allow me to push it hard this last 2 months.

On Wed. 4/21 I am planning on riding from Liberty Lake to CDA on Riverview/High Drive then doing one loop of the course and riding back to Liberty Lake either back over the hills or on the trail at 15mph average if anyone is interested in doing a long training ride that day....
