Ya know, as much as I love my Infinit, I've never had any problems with my hammer gel on the run, so I'm going to just stick with what has worked flawlessly in the past.  Someday, if Infinit ever comes out with a gel, I'll give it a try.

Hey Ya'll for those who may not get a chance to see the bike course before the race I have just finished posting video of the course on my blog. Take the videos for what they are, amateur. Post any questions and I can answer them when I get a chance.

Hey Timebaron,

I am trying to formulate a strategy using Infinit for IML.  It is my first IM and I just this week realized that the fructose I consume in place of sugar has been causing GI upset during my running.  This problem has plagued me for 2+ years.  While I am thrilled to solve the problem by removing fructose (magnesium likely causes this issue too) I need help figuring out how to fuel with something other than the Powerbar drink which is high in magnesium and includes fructose.

Do you mind sharing your plan for using Infinit on the bike AND how to fuel/hydrate for the run?

Any help is appreciated.

I was having bad GI issues for years and while this works perfectly for me, it may not for you.

For biking, I fill my Aerobottle with regular strength Infinit.  Then, I take 3 more bottles of infinit with me, but mixed double strength.  When I come to a drink station, I squirt equal amounts of water from the stop and then from my double strength bottle.  It doesn't have to be perfect.  That's well over 6 hours worth of Infinit there.  FYI, I have two bottles on my frame and one behind my seat.  I have room for one more bottle, but I don't use it.
For the run, this works for me.  I just take two flasks of Hammer Gel with me.  That is way more than enough for a marathon.  I take a squirt every 3 miles and just use the water on the course.  That way I don't have to carry very much and I don't have to "think" very hard on the run.  By mid run, it's all I can do just to be able to count by 3s, so doing minor math calculations is out of the question for figuring calories and carbs and yadda yadda yadda.
I haven't had any GI problems AT ALL since I started doing this.  I just kinda cut and pasted other peoples ways of doing this, and it's worked great for me.  Let me know if I can help anymore.  This is my 3rd and I'm still learning.

Thanks Timebaron,

I look forward to trying your method.  I'll be riding the bike course this weekend and doing a short swim in the Ohio so hopefully I'll be able to get the product before then.  Do you take any salt tabs or endurolytes?  Also, what finally cured you of your GI issues?

I did a 75-mile ride this weekend (in 90+ deg TX heat and humidity) and did pretty well with the new Powerade.  The flavor took a little to get used to as I'm not a huge fan of mango but it was not overbearing and was not too sweet.  I have had plenty of GI issues w/Gatorade and other HFCS drinks and had no GI problems at all.

I have been an Infinit user but would like to be able to live off the course.  So, I think that I'll start the ride (3 bottles) w/ Infinit then switch to Powerade as I consume the Infinit.

On the run, water and Gu has been what has worked for me in the past.  As long as that continues to work during training, I'm going to stick with it.  If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

No, no salt tabs or endurolytes.  Infinit has it all, and since you can customize it with more or less of that stuff, you can have it "your way".  I don't know what "cured" my GI problems besides just trying different products until I hit on the one that worked well with my gut.  Infinit and Hammer gel.  Practice with different things until you find the one that works for you.  Good luck and keep having fun!

I also used the new Powerbar drink this weekend for a 100 mile ride.  It was plenty hot and humid.  I'll agree about the orange mango flavor, it's not what I'd pick but after the first bottle it didn't bother me nor did I get sick of it towards the end.  I found that it worked pretty well.  I've been trying different nutrition strategies on my long rides, none of them working very well.  This ride with the PB drink was the best so far.

I'll bring my hammer gels and endurolytes but otherwise will be living off the course in Louisville.  This makes me pretty happy.

Have an HIM this coming Sunday (eagleman)

How much taper would one do this week?  My plan ccalls for like 12 hours of training, but I'm pretty drained, energy wise from ramping up training lately and wonder if I shouldn't maybe cut back and take saturday full off to have a decent race (I'm just using it as practice, not concerned with time AT ALL).

After drinking the first bottle, my stomach felt like it was churning the entire ride and wouldn't settle down.  I've never had any other issues with any other drink before.  Kind of weird.

It is weird that it upset your stomach right off the bat, but maybe it's just not for you.

So I might be running into some training scheduling issues coming up in July. I have a vacation planned the last weekend of July, and I might not be able to bring the bike with me for long rides. Cant change the dates of vacation since I am going with a few other people and this is the best option. Do you think that this is going to derail last minute training? I dont want to jeopardize performance by taking off a long weekend a month prior to IMKY. Granted, I will swim and run, but biking is where the difficulty lies.

Is it just the weekend you will be gone?  If so, you could always burn a vacation day and do a long ride on Monday or Friday.

I did the Rock n Rollman HIM in Macon Georgia this last Saturday, if the hills in Louisville are anything like the ones in Georgia, I have a lot of training to do.

That race was tough.

I think I can handle it if the hills are like that, but if it's hot like that I'm doomed.

Yes, thank you.  I haven't had a chance to watch them yet, but thanks for putting in the time for us that can't get to the course pre-race.

Granted it was only a short run today, but I switched back to Cytomax and felt great.  Guess IMP is not for me.  I am kind of glad because I just ordered two 4.5 lbs containers of Cyto before I heard we were getting the sample product.

I am pretty sure a couple missed days won't derail your training. You will be near the end of peak by that time and moving into taper, so most of the hay should be in the barn by then

Sounds good. What I think I will do is take that Monday off as well and go for a century ride. I understand that most of the work will be done at that point, but I dont want to feel lazy at the last minute

So I rode the 1/2 course for the Rock n'Rollman this past weekend (right after the sprint). According to my coach it is a good comparison to Louisville. I hope he is wrong, it was one of the toughest rides I have done to date. Looks like I have some hills and heat to train for!

80 days left!
