TrevorC - 2010-10-24 9:56 PM well I made it through the 30k run. I wore a neroprene knee brace, which totally helped. Only thing was it sucks trying to run up any type of hill with it on. Godo feedback from you guys on last weeks run. I literally doubled my nutrition from last week.
~200 cal/hr after the 1st 45-60 minutes. Felt good when we finished. Was nice running at MIchelles pace today.
Only thing that sucks is when you do an out and back and you do not go far enough on the out. We got back to our start and had to run about a mile around the park we started. mentally that sucked! But i definitely felt good about the run today.
I'm recognizing that its about the distance right now, and not the time as much.

So true! Great job on the run. I'm glad it went better this week!

Tony, don't sweat it at all.  From my limited experience talking to people at the races this weekend, DNF's are a lot more common in CX due to the pounding nature the course has on your gear.  Just from this weekend Doug has to adjust his cables and soak his chain in gasoline to remove the grit.  I saw one guy walking out of the woods with his chain swinging in his hand and another guy running with his bike accross the finish line.

I also noticed the atmosphere at CX is much more jockular.  No feel good encouragement going on.  One guy started yelling," You're all gonna die!  It only gets worse from here, turn back now!!" at the start of the cat4 race.  It was rather funny.  But then he took it out on the course and started giving people crap for running with their bikes.  Once he started picking on Doug I'd had enough.  I yelled at him, "Back off buddy that one's mine!"  Kind of shut up the crowd for a while and he started back pedaling saying that he actually was complimenting Doug for the way he carried his bike cuz so many people were doing it wrong.  Guess all that testosterone got to me as well.  Gggggrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Badger:  personally that would be an experience from HELL!!!  I don't do cold well and can't imagine doing what you did.  Plus adding beer to the equation at the rate your metabolism must be going....wow!  I would be curled up on the side of the road. Crazy man, congrats.

Trevor - glad the knee is holding out.  Keep up the RICE, (although it sounds like you are skipping the R).  Aren't calories a beautiful thing?  And I agree about hitting the milage. In the grand scale, one mile doesn't matter but it does so much mentally to hit the number you set out to do.  I've been known to circle the neighborhood on my bike doing the same thing,  Keep up the great work.

John,  I don't think Doug was intentionally aiming at anyone but.......  That was his first attempt at that hill and had to run it b/c too many people were in his line that stopped.  You can bet he found an empty line on the next attempt!!  You men and your egos!!!

Haha that's pretty funny Tracy.  I am definitely hooked on the Cross races, I really like the whole race scene, everyone is much more laid back, races are still tough but everyone is still having fun.

Glad to hear he liked it.

Trev--did your therapist tell you to continue to ice?  I've never had a "disrupted" meniscus, but for other things I was told to ice during the acute phase only.  How did you do the fueling?

Tony--I understand your whole second guessing on the DNF. I've only done it once when I fell and sprained my ankle on an icy bridge during a marathon.   It sucked, but time to move on!

Dineen--you're one tough dude.  What was the exact H20 temp?  Lowest i've been in is 52F and it was not so fun.

I was pretty pysched.  This morning I got to run in shorts!

GREAT for you guys!! We soooooo love Victoria and try to make it there every summer. Holler next time you go and I'll tell you our favorite to-dos. We have a breakfast place that I especially love (Blue Fox). And when Avery gets older you'll have a whole new set of adventures. Butchart is worth the trip -- we did a half-day there when we took a butt-crack-early ferry and it was pretty much perfect. Missed you at the run clinic, but a good week to miss -- it poured and I had to leave early for soccer.

Steve, those pictures of Victoria (especially at night!) are gorgeous.  That is definitely on our list of places to go, and it is a pretty short flight from here!

Shift levers and brake levers are in!  Got a great deal on some TT900 stuff...barely used for less than ebay had on any of the tt500's.  So I am excited.  Now I just need the frame to get here.

Hopefully the frame, crank (yes that is the crankset and not some elicit drug), front derailleur, and base bar will be in this week.

Can't wait for my turn to throw up some bike porn.

For those going to Vegas, who's interested in dinner the night before?  I'm making the reservation so give me your count.  If someone has a suggestion let me know.  I am assuming a basic Italian restaurant will do.

Steve, it is so great you and Kim are travelling already.  Take advantage of it now while she is still small enough to sleep in your arms and not weigh 50 lbs.  Somewhere between 8 months and 4 years old traveling becomes jus so complicated.  BTW,  Avery is getting so big and georgous!!!

************REAL QUESTION*************

I attended my first Masters Swim class today and during the cool down he had us doing 75s with breathing every 4th or 5th stroke.  What is the purpose of this? My thoughts were 1) to increase lung capacity and gas exchange efficiency and 2) to ensure we slow down.  Am I correct and is this a good cool down activity to incorporate into all my workouts?

Sweeeeeet! :-) I live about 2 miles from there. LOL!

Also, let me know if any of you need a ride if you're not renting a car.

Use monorail. I think it's a little cheaper than taxi. Just get off Imperial Palace and walk to Palazzo.

If you need anything, just let me know. If you forgot a specific nutrition, or apparel or anything, let me know as well because I can get you discounts and buy them for you.

I'm super excited!! :-)

If anyone is interested in doing a short run (2-4 miles or more if you want), let me know, I'll be happy to take you to Sunset Park where I tend to run. 1 mile loop around a lake with a bunch of ducks and a Moai on an island.

You know, I've always wondered about that. I've seen people do 3/5/7/9 method at times. I *think* it's for breath control. I tried this a few times, and I kind of don't notice the difference. But then again, it's possible that a few times isn't going to make a difference.

Garmin 305 question!!!

My unit has gone crazy! It turns on by itself and does nothing but run down the battery. I turn it off it turns on again. I tried letting it run out of power an then recharging - no love. I tried clearing it but the steps in the manual do not work. Any ideas before I contact Garmin?

Hold both buttons on the left side...power and not sure what the other is called.
Hold for a few seconds, and it should reset the unit.
