I loved bike racing. It was my first serious sport. I am 3 months older than Greg Lemond. I gave it up when I realized I needed to be serious about my studies in college. I just finished "Slaying the Badger" about the 1986 Tour de France. It covers a lot of the years leading up to that Tour. Knowing what I know about Greg, he and people like him are the ones I feel sorriest for. Lance and the other dopers drove the Greg's of the world out of the sport.

BTW: From the book you will realize that the racers have literally been doping for DECADES! Bike racing is a very dirty sport. I do not consider the public or the other doping riders the victims, but the riders who refused to dope and the people that were vilified for speaking the truth as the real victims.

Maybe I'll start watching archery or curling.

Nothing for me this weekend, other than maybe a group ride in the morning.  Sun is FINALLY back out here.  I grabbed my run bag on the way out the door this morning thinking I had repacked it.  Tonight's 45 degree run will be in shorts and a tshirt.  Next time I'll check the bag.

Good luck racers!

Professional bike racing has gone the way of professional body building...  nobody in either sport has a real interest in cleaning it up....  I doubt all the chips have fallen in this story and my guess is that some of the so-called "governing bodies" will be implicated in this before it is all over...

I found my missing HR strap this morning on the floor of the garage underneath the shelves that hold all of my sporty stuff.  It had been missing since I came home from my HIM last July.  I had stubbornly refused to buy a new one and had decided to run by RPE  and bike by power until it was time to start training for a race.  I am very curious to see what my aHR is like on Sunday's 45-50 minute run!

So glad I am stubborn.  I ended up treating myself to a cool new hoodie about 2 hours later.

Have a nice weekend everyone!  GO NINERS!

And now the Armstrong case starts to hit closer to home ......

Wall Street Journal Article

I have ridden with Jimmy Ochowicz (Currently the DS for BMC Bike Racing Team) on many occasions and ride with his brother Billy almost weekly.  Looking forward to hearing the "insiders" story when I get a chance.  I wondered with his ties to Team Motorola, if or when he was going to get "drug" into this mess.  Pun intended!

thats so funny... i was renewing my wsj subscription this afternoon right before trevor posted his last.  then i saw that article.  then come over here and read trev's post.  started typing a reply, but since i'm cool calm and collected i let it go.

anyways...  oprah!!!

Wait what? You were going to disagree with me?

I don't agree with it, but that's unfortunately what the world is. Lance said it the other night. You feel invinsible. That's what all these bigwig type feel like. They think they are too rich and powerful to ever be brought down.

I would like to talk nutrition..what do you take.  With my job it is soemtimes hard to eat a good nutritious meal.  I take fish oil once a day..a pack of multivitamins once a day..and a protein powder after a workout.

I too am really interested in nutrition. Dairy based protein powder doesn't agree with me but it tastes far better than any others to me. I have traded it in for cottage cheese. Go figure! I can eat that just fine. Mostly I try to eat clean with very little refined foods. I used to watch my carb intake and keep that reduced compared to what most people eat. I don't think that is a good idea with tri training though. Recently I have added in cinnamon raisin ezekiel bread. Delish! Also take supplements including fish oil and a probiotic. I am curious to hear what others do.

Ok you two, what exactly do you mean?  are we talking during exercise or during normal life?

I eat pretty healthy most of the time, but I don't have any forbidden foods.  A large percentage of my diet is compromised of high quality carbs--sprouted grain breads (Ezekial falls in that camp), oats, some brown rice, homemade whole wheat banana or pumpkin bread, at least 3+ servings of vegetables primarily spinach or broccoli mixed in something, a few pieces of fruit and chicken or turkey (although I do eat red meat). Also try to juice and ingest smoothies to get more F&Vs into the diet although it's sporadic.  I love dark chocolate so that is part of my diet too.

I do take in whey protein powder when training loads gets really high for IM, take Metagenics multis which include fish oil.  That's about it.

I eat alot of chicken and veggies for dinner. I usually have egg whites turkey suasage and spinach omletts for breakfast. Lunch is some carbs and mainly leftovers with v8 low sodium. I usually include fruit into an am snack and cottage cheese for afternoon snack. After every workout I have whey protien. I am not currently taking a multi-vitamin. I do not have a forbidden list, but if I know something is not part of the normal routine I try to have that in portion size.

David, I forgot to mention my frequent trips to McDonald's. Tongue out Salad with grilled chicken if it's lunch, mcdouble no bun and fries if it's dinner.  Clean eating at it's best!

Suzy, I guess the nutrition I am interested in just how other triathletes eat on a day to day basis.  Nutrition during a training session is simple for me.  Water and a gel once in a blue moon if it's a long brick.

I was reminded this morning why I love Tucson.  It's been so dang cold for us lately that I haven't been enjoying my training outside.  When I left for my run this am it was 60 and not a cloud in the sky.  Man, nothing beats running in that weather and some kick a$$ music!  Just had to share.

I am off to eat lunch (big salad with left over taco meat and veggie soup) and then take the kiddos to the pool.  Have a good day, everybody!

John thanks for the write up.  I think the 95 degrees may be a deal breaker.  I travel to get away from the heat!

I had my CdA finisher jacket swiped at the car wash yesterday.  I hope the zipper catches some sensitive part of the scum bags body.

My wife is running Disney Half tomorrow, hoping she has a good race.

As far as nutrition goes, wouldn't it be awesome to have a personal chef/ dietician?  Trying to find one that will work for free.

for me it would be both.  Being a Paramedic it is so much easier to grab a burger and fries than to eat healthy.  When time is allowed I try to go to a grocery store and make my own lunch.  At home my wife is a very good cook and she is the cardiac rehab nurse as well so we eat healthy.

I am taking the supplements as I am in training right now.

PS Heading to Cozumel in a week for a vacation.

Almost the same boat, but I found mine!  Keep looking, Trevor! Now, I have to remember to charge the watch (where is that darn charger mount, thingy!?) No, Bruce, it's not under the shelving with your socks.

Today for lunch, I grabbed broccoli, half a baked potato, and some chicken breast from last nite's dinner.  I topped the potato with 2% plain greek yogurt and it's delish!  Who needs sour cream or butter with that yummy yogurt?

I tend towards lean protein (unless I smell bacon in the air, all bets are off!), a variety of veggies (more leafy greens when possible) and I am doing my fish oil (Nordic Naturals-high in EPA/DHA).  I cannot stay away from rice, but occasionally try to do brown rice instead of white rice.

I love to talk about food!!!!

I eat a smoothie every day for breakfast (banana, orange in winter/cantalope in summer, nonfat plain yogurt, frozen bluberries+raspberries+pineapple, splash of OJ, flax, green vibrance, if recovering from big day or fueling up for big day tomorrow a dash of oatmeal).

I graze for lunch (stay-at-home mom, not usually home). Often have an open-faced toasted cheese sando (on high-grain wheat bread), or a hard-boiled egg mixed with cottage cheese or greek yogurt and a dash of salt, or a sweet potato with cottage cheese and cinnamon, or leftovers.

Dinners I cook for picky kids but try to keep it healthy. Hard to do. I make a batch of soup once/week in the winter (split pea, clam chowder, chili, chicken tortilla, chicken veggie w/dumplings, etc.). Chicken dishes, some steak dishes, pasta every couple of weeks. Try to hide veggies. In the winter I LOVE roasted veggies (potatoes, carrots, onions, celeriac, turnips, parsnips -- toss with olive oil and sea salt and bake at 425 for 45-60 minutes). Salads. Dinners are hard around here, as kids have (different) activities 4-5 nights/week, hubby has weird schedule, I'm driving... we do the best we can. Probably order pizza once/week and then eat it for leftovers one more night. I cook seasonally, so more salads in the summer w/grilled chicken and stuff...

I take vitamins if I remember, and have a formula of placebos I follow religiously when I feel a tickle in the throat (2-3K vitamin C, 2K vitamin D, Umcka, Zinc [50mg 2x a day, not within an hour of the C], triple up on green vibrance). I swear by my placebo formula, who cares if science is behind it or not, it works wonders for me and I rarely get sick (knock on wood).

I love the first race of a new season and unpacking, finally, from the last race. You find all sorts of fun stuff in there!!! Snacks, race bibs, moldy water bottles, random socks, your favorite hat, HRMs... !!!!!

Food......big bowl of oatmeal everyday, one full cup makes a large portion. Mix in a Chobani yogurt and I have a breakfast that last me until noon or longer, even if it gets cold it is good. I also sip on a bottle of water with accelarade and take a few supplements (wont tell you how many Embarassed). Grilled chicken and pbj's for lunch or sliced turkey breast. Dinner is usually chicken or pasta, very rarely red meat.

I will also put a plug in for Stabucks smoothies and sandwiches when I am on the road.

Dude, where are the vegetables in this diet?  or the fruit?  how about some bluleberries in that oatmeal? a banana, apple or orange as a mid morning snack?  and a big side salad with the lunch sandwich?

Yeah! What she said! Freaking awesome day to be a 49er fan! I just love my team and my city by the bay! Mom and I lost our voices and both have a crush on our tattooed wonder boy! .

Quick note on my run this morning, my zone 1 and zone 2 feel incredibly different. As I was movingnalong at what I thought was zone 2, I looked at my Garmin and saw a 115 HR. now, I haven't tested in awhile but I think my zone 2 used to start at 136 or something like that, so picked up the effort until HR settled in at 136ish, no need to be a hero, after all! Anyhow, felt good after the run, but probably one of the harder efforts I have run in awhile. Not sure what my takeaway is, but I think I am glad I found my HRM strap...slacker that I am, it keeps me accountable.

I do believe that I burned more calories today, screaming, yelling, jumping in front of the TV than I did last Sunday on my long run.  PHEW.  NINERS to the Super Bowl!!!

Not even going to talk about what I ate....and drank.....but I do accept that I need to make some changes, pronto.....8 months until IMLT.

I've also been using the HRM, and hanging in the high 130's.  Don't know if it's right or not, figure I'll just keep absorbing data until I understand it!
