CLOSED japewang - 2013-02-02 6:43 PM Experior - 2013-02-02 2:14 PM Even though it will leave me with a boatload of work tomorrow, I'm taking the day completely off from work. I just got back (an hour ago) from 6 hours of butchering a 650lb pig (with apologies to any who find that distasteful). We've never done one that big, and it was kind of exhausting! Can I log it as training? Somehow I'll still get on the bike, though. Slow clap. I always buy into a side of beef and have always wanted to do a pig. You sir, are AWESOME. Thanks. It was actually a glorious day for it, here. We got an early start in cool weather, and then all morning and part of the afternoon we were outside on a crisp cool sunny day. Three guys with some kids for help, and we managed to get from 650 pounds of frisky pig to freezer provisions in 6 hours. Not too bad, actually. But the best part is that it is completely and utterly different from my job, and I needed that. |

Extreme Veteran 692 England | Subject: RE: Fred D and Queen Zipp's SWIM, BIKE RUN consistency thread.... CLOSED A little late, but here are my January totals:
It's rather less than I'd have hoped for, but of course I lost a week completely to illness, and had another week of very light training. But the main thing was that apart from the week off, I hit my consistency goals for the month, so I'm considering it a success. I've also managed to lose a little weight over the month - only 1.4kg, but if I lose that every month between now and July I'll be below my target weight. I'm finally starting to feel better and was able to manage a run with a couple of hill intervals yesterday, so hopefully my training is back on the upswing. No training today as I'm on the stupid part of my shift pattern (finished work at 3am, back in now at 2pm, so basically have time to drive home, sleep, get showered, eat, drive back to work). But once today is over I'm off for the next two weekends which is my favourite part of the shift pattern. Hopefully (weather permitting) I'll be getting some more mountain biking in, as well as starting to build up some distance on my runs. |

CLOSED cathyd - 2013-02-02 2:31 PM I stopped at the gym after my night shift for a short treadmill run. Its snowing again today, the weather is so odd this year. We get snow and cold for a week, then it warms up and all the snow melts, and now its snowing and cold again. Seems like you're getting the same weather as us at the moment. Which is unexpected given the geographical distance... How do you find training after night shift? I generally avoid it because I find it wakes me up and then I can't sleep at all. I tend to sleep first and then train in the afternoon/evening instead. |

CLOSED With another day of snow packed roads and below zero conditions, I hit the TM for my long run. Very happy to have it when the weather is this way. Supposed to do some short 30' swim, but I may bag it in favor of getting some stuff done around the house, including going grocery shopping which is usually awful due to all the SB last minute purchases. I do plan on watching the SB, but with no interest in either team, it'll be for the commercials. Have a great Sunday all. |

I tend to sleep first and then train in the afternoon/evening instead. When I train after a night shift I do it right after work in the city then drive home (30 min commute). If I drove home first it would be very hard not to go straight to bed. My work schedule is 2 days, 2 nights, 5 days off. After the first night I usually would only do a short run. After the 2nd night I would either run or swim. Usually the drive home after is enough to make me tired and able to get right to sleep when I get home. I should add that I have no trouble sleeping during the day between night shifts for 8 hours straight, unlike many of my coworkers who struggle to get in 5 hours of broken sleep. What's everyone got going on today? I'm hoping for a little trainer ride to recover my legs. More sore than they had been for my other longlong runs, but not pain. Sleep is more important for recovery than a little spin, right?) |

Expert 829 | Subject: RE: Fred D and Queen Zipp's SWIM, BIKE RUN consistency thread.... CLOSED swam this morning, it's coming along. I worked on increasing my tempo for a lap or two, then cruising a lap or two. Repeat. Also experimented with how deep to keep my head in the water. I normally have it totally under water looking straight down, but I can breathe a bit easier if I keep the top of my head out of the water, with the water line just above my forehead. I'm looking down at about a 45 degree angle, and it sinks my feet a little bit. Not sure yet, the faster I swim the better the higher head works. As I slow down, I need to drop my head lower to keep my feet up, but I have to turn my head further to take a breath. I'm going to have the instructor take a look at my stroke next session and see what he says... 30 minute run later. david. |

My biggest issue is maintaining proper head position and I tend to be too low in the water. If the water is just barely at my brow line that's where my coach is happy. I like the idea of increasing tempo on a swim by doing a couple of 50's hard and a couple at cruise. Intervals of sorts.swam this morning, it's coming along. How important is it to ride on the aerobars on the trainer? Do you ride aero on the trainer? On my road bike, I can do aero on the trainer better than the road. Geometry is just not right but I can deal with it on the trainer. My tri bike, I'm aero no matter what, up only for a turn or short break. If I'm not mistaken, the idea to stay aero in training is more so you are used to being there and can do whatever your race distance is comfortably in aero on race day. I try to stay aero as much as possible on the trainer because I learned fairly early on that if I don't spend a lot of time that way when I'm training I struggle with glute tightness when I race. If I've spent plenty of time training in that position it's fine. |

Extreme Veteran 692 England | Subject: RE: Fred D and Queen Zipp's SWIM, BIKE RUN consistency thread.... CLOSED Question - does anyone in the group use a foam roller? I've had one for a couple of years, but been a little lax on using it. I went to a session last night to learn to use it properly, where they gave us a sequence to foam roller the whole body. I was amazed at some of the muscles you can get to (never thought the rotator cuff could be got at with a foam roller). I'm thinking about substituting a couple of my pilates sessions with the foam roller instead. It requires quite a lot of core stuff, and from what I'm told it's valuable for injury prevention (and a lot cheaper than regular sports massages). Anyone have any thoughts? Today I was planning a nice outdoor ride. Woke up to find an inch of snow on the ground. Didn't see that coming... Most of the ride is off road, but there's a 5 mile stretch in the middle to get between the two trails, so I'm going to have to go and check out conditions and then maybe reassess. |
