License plates?  On a bike?  Seriously?  Where is that required?

I think he forgot to put the 'sarcastic' font on Glen.

Ok...I missed that one....but it would not surprise me if that were the case in some areas if local governments were looking for another source of revenue.

Thank you Glen, it is not often that people take me seriously (even if I wasn't being serious!!) Laughing

ETA - By the way - I live in NY where the tax the HE11 out of everything so it would not surprise me if some day...

Tracy, awesome workouts this weekend!  And yay, for feeling strong at the end of your run yesterday.

Interesting story re: the bike patrols...I think we are super lucky here in San Francisco, there are little bikes painted on the streets pretty much everywhere to remind motorists that "bicycles are allowed full use of the lane".  Of course that doesn't stop people from making right turns into cyclists...but it happens much less than it used to.  The thing that bugs me and I am a cyclist is that so many just run right through stop signs!  Even red lights, not just the little 4 corner ones.   There is a huge fixie community here and I guess it is not so fun for them to stop and go, but...c'mon.

I got into the pool today for the first time in 3 weeks and did a 2500 yd workout.  I was not dreading the workout at all, totally looked forward to it, but at the end I saw that I had a 200yd freestyle with 50 every 5th, 6th, 7, then 8th breath.  Omg, I actually did it this time with only a few regroups on 7 and 8.

Major difference was I told myself "No excuses, no saying "I can't", and just DO IT.  Oh, and I slowed everything way down...used less energy, thus needed less oxygen.

Have a terrific day everyone!

Finally getting to posting the RR

I am shocked at how crazy life has been, but still manage to find time to get my workouts in, my wife had a super solid race, she was 6/14 and only 3 minutes from 3rd place, so it lit her fire a little bit as she is getting faster all around.

I will respond to the bike patrol thing a bit later tonight, running to a meeting for our mission trip.

Did the 2.5 mile trail run today and beat my time by 4 minutes. I went from a 32:07 2.5 mile run to a 28:10 tonight. I was flying (well my version). The 2 hills kicked my butt like always but I only had to stop for a second. What is crazy is I swam first lol before I went to run.

Had an unintentional DP but remembered something I wanted to write about.

Did my long run on a paved trail this morning, one with lots of bikes/runners/walkers, etc. At one part of the trail there were two bike cops hanging out near a bathroom... with a radar gun!! They were totally stalking cyclists!!

This bothered me. Yes, there are 15mph signs posted on the trail. But this was 7am on a Monday morning and the trail wasn't exactly crowded. Yes, I ride faster than 15mph on the trail oftentimes. Yes, I have done interval training on the trail. Yes, I have done small pacelines on the trail. But when I do those things it's never when the trail is crowded, and I certainly slow WAY down for peds, kids, etc.

So do you think that bike cops should enforce trail speed limits at all hours? Do you think it's OK to ride fast(er) on the trail if it's not crowded? Like at 6am on a weekday?

Didn't see the bike cops stop anyone, and did see them riding on the trail a couple of times after that. I also found myself wondering how they could catch a fast cyclist. Cops had mtn. bikes and weren't exactly athletically built, by cycling standards...

Have a great week, all!!

Do you think they should change the speed limit on the roads for cars at different times of the day?

I'm just sayin..... I agree with you, but no exceptions I suppose.

While I think the cops might be better served watching crazy drivers, I don't disagree with them monitoring the speed on the trail.  I actually stopped riding trails in favor of the road because I was always over the limit and frequently there were families with kids stopped in the middle.  Just not safe for them or me.    If we want drivers to live by the rules of the road, we need to live by them too.  Just my two cents.

After two hours and many saddles, I settled on one for the weekend.  I left it until the very end because it looked so weird and I thought it would never be comfortable.  It's totally built for man parts, but seems to work well for me, at least on the trainer in both aero and upright positions.  With two long rides this weekend, I hope it isn't a total bust.

Kyla,  I understand your complaint.  It does seem extremely unfair that they are speed gunning cyclist when they are riding OFF THE ROAD, yet cyclist receive so little support when riding on the road.  I'm sure we've all been screamed at countless times by angry drivers to get off the road.  Guess we should all stay inside on our trainers and at spin class.

If he hasn't already, ask Birdy about is cop/ticket story on his bike. Short of it is he got a traffic ticket for not putting his foot down at the stop sigh and the cop said he rolled the stop.  Had a nasty fine associated with it.

So Steve, how many Future Triathlete pieces of apparel does little Avery already have?

Yeah the road scares the <blank> out of me still. On my last ride in teh country to do some good hills a big F250 diesel sitting on at least 35 inch tires was angry I was riding and got about an inch from me, put his exhaust (which was right in my face) near me and then floored it filling my lungs with black smoke. I would have said something but from the looks of them I would have ended up in a shack or the woods reliving deliverance. After that I had 2 or 3 people yell at me and tell me there was a bike path up the road that I should ride on as the roads are for cars.

Steve ~ ADORABLE!! Soooo many people told me to enjoy "this time" (when Sammi was born) cuz they grow up so very fast. Now she is 2 1/2 and I can't even begin to tell you how fast the time has passed by. I swear there are days I wake up and look at her and think she's had a growth spurt over night!!

Has anyone upgraded to the newer Garmin HR strap?  Is it more comfortable?  I had a glorious month off with no HR strap and putting it on yesterday, it was extremely annoying and started to chafe again at the bottom of the hard plastic part.  Should I invest in the newer strap?

Thanks!

I have the new "premium" strap, and it is night and day different.  After a little bit I forget it is even there, much less bulky and rigid, so it just conforms to your body and feels much more natural.

My wife and I went in today to get our shots for our trip in November, walked out feeling violated!

A string of shots including Hepatitis A, Yellow Fever, Polio Booster, and something else I forgot, plus I have to go back in for my tetanus booster at some point.  Whew, arm is quite sore today, now to hope I do not get any side effects from them in the next couple weeks, one was said to take around 8-10 days before headaches etc could set in from it.

I didn't even know there was a newer strap...

Kim, do you use your HR monitor with the strap-hook-things or do you just slide it under a jogbra? I do the latter, but with looser-fitting bra tops it often doesn't register properly. Fortunately I know my HR by feel pretty well, but that's still frustrating.

Is this newer one designed such that you could slide it under a bra w/o having the strap go around your back? Or does the softer strap mean you do need to hook it all around? (Am I making sense here?

The newer one looks like it is a much smaller plastic piece but still has the strap that goes all the way around.  The one I currently have has the strap hook things like you mentioned, but I actually never thought to use just the plastic piece without the straps...but yes, I slide it under the sport bra.  Not sure about the answer to your question.  Here's a pic

Yeah -- I just slide the harder plastic part under my bra. Sometimes I get an itty bitty bit of chafe right in the center of my chest, but I never feel it when running.

If you get it, let me know what you think and if/how it could be used without the entire hook strap. I HATE having things around my chest (yes, even bras, which I try to wear as infrequently as possible as clothing permits).

And since I won't be here for Suzy's "Who's Racing This Weekend" query... let me just say that

I am racing on a jet plane to Maui with my husband tomorrow at o'dark thirty!!

We put the kids on a plane to Reno, NV today, where they were greeted by my parents and headed off to their cabin in Truckee, CA (Lake Tahoe). Their cousin (sister's son) arrives at the grandparents tomorrow (it's the 3rd Annual Grandparents Camp -- gotta love it!), and sis and her hubs are off to Maui as well. My hubs and I plan to dive, dive, and dive some more. Then we'll eat fish tacos for lunch and hang out with my sis/b-i-l and go out for fancy dinners with fru-fru drinks.

Taking the laptop (for the DVD player!), so won't be totally disconnected. Plan to run while I'm there and get to have the joy of doing a 17-mile run in the Hawaii heat. I will pretend I'm 9 miles into my Kona IM run, right?! Ha ha. Gonna try to do a night dive the evening of the long run, so I can run in the morning but not sacrifice a day of diving. Where there's a will, there's a way to make it all happen, right?!

Have a great week and weekend, y'all! Happy training, happier racing, and never stop smiling!!

It isn't the strap that bugs me, it is that big plastic thing all the way across my chest!!!

Thanks, Jeff, I may get this one...will have to see if I can find a good deal!

Pictures, please ...

Sure, William, don't post for 2 or 3 weeks and then just come lurk on here hoping for some sport bra pictures...pervy!
