Master ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() tahrens - 2010-08-18 8:47 AM Kyla, I've been on a snorkeling trip to Bonaire and would love to go diving there. Getting dive certified and going on a dive vacation is on my "must do in 5 years" list. I love the water. Going through college I planned on being a marine biologist to study sharks. I even have a shark tattoo! Apparently no one told me it is REALLY HARD to major in Marine Biology at the University of Kansas so I had to slightly modify my plans. However that hasn't taken away my passion for the ocean. I would love to get my girls on a snorkeling trip. I think once they got over the weirdness of having fish swim up to you on occasion they would love it! Get thee certified, girl!! Fortunately we did that pre-kids, so it's a hobby we've nurtured for awhile, otherwise we probably never would have! We own our equipment but are thinking more and more about renting. Really we only do one dive trip a year, but you are supposed to have your equipment "serviced" annually. We're always torn whether or not to do this, seeing as we dive once (but equipment sitting around for a year isn't necessarily safer). It costs quite a bit for the annual service. We're starting to feel that if you rent from a reputable shop, you will get newer equipment that is used and serviced regularly. The drawback is not being as familiar with equipment, but when I had to use rental equipment in a pinch last trip (because my newly-serviced equipment was having an issue!!!) I actually liked it better than my own. BCs in particular have come a long way over the years, especially for women. We're here and in heaven. Dave's hustling and bustling and planning our dive schedule for optimum maximization of dive time (and keeping a morning open for my long run -- we're doing a night dive that day!). I've had the most heavenly fish taco on the planet -- newer place that we will be hitting numerous times this go-around. And am particularly looking forward to trying some baklava ice cream cake at a local pita joint. YUM!! Drinking Malibu/POG in the condo this evening, then early to bed. It's ALL good!!! Oh, and I signed up for IM CDA 2011 last night. |

I would assume so.... You are working that much hard on the hills. It will take a toll on you! Have fun though. Remember hills are our friends! ^^^^^^^^^^^^ This is so true, John. I firmly believe running on hills has made me into a much better runner especially on flats, suprisingly! Adjusting nutrition...maybe a little bit more, but I have nothing to compare it to. I am learning so much about nutrition for harder efforts, particularly before and after. During, maybe just bring a little extra of whatever you normally take and see how you feel? But definitely, good breakfast before long run or bike...recovery drink with protein. Yay for hills! How is the Augusta run course? Have a great weekend. This might be a helpful article regarding the hill question and calorie burn. It does suggest you should increase intake. On my last long ride with 10,000 ft of climbing I took in about 20% more calories per hour than I normally do. I didn't plan for it, but there were points in the ride where I was feeling a little light and upped the each of the 15 minute feedings slightly. Felt great coming off the bike. Of course this was at a Z2 HR. If I was doing a Tempo or racing, not sure that would work. It stands to reason you might do that running, but I've never needed to. I guess experimentation is the way to go. My only advice to someone who has moved from the flatlands to hill country is to take it easy and slow and build up on them, especially on the run. Running down hills hard CAN be a really good way to set yourself up for knee and quad issues. If I am doing any hill workouts, I tend to run up the hills and lightly jog down them or even walk down them depending on the purpose of the workout. I agree with Kim. Hills are great for strengthening the body! |

First off, you can't just throw this at the end of a post like you signed up for the local 5k run! ![]() Second, we also only seem to get one or two dive trips in a year due to kids, etc. and we sold our equipment about 4 years ago and rent on site (except for mask, fins, wetsuits). I would highly recommend this process, lots less baggage to deal with on the plane, you get usually get newer guages, regulators, BC's etc. and don't have to worry about it if they don't work properly, you just get a new one. Just my $.02 |

Good luck with the move! Very glad I was able to keep my pants on yesterday! Little sore today, but not as bad as expected! And what's the deal with that? I can't believe you guys let that one go by! |

For us non racers, when does your season officially end? do you plan to take time off? ramp right back up for Fall running season? or sit on a couch and watch Football? No race for me this weekend, just getting back to a routine as summer vacation winds down. Good luck to everyone who is racing, and good training to everyone else! I still have an Oly left in September, but I'm focused on my November marathon. The next few months will involve lots of running, maintenance swimming, and bike when I can so I don't forget how to. What comes next depends on whether I qualify to join the gang in Boston next spring! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() So I am not sure if you would call this a great workout day or not. Played in the pool for an hour with my granddaughter. Hauled my butt off the couch a went to the lake for a long swim. Both beaches were closed do to high ecoli count. No Swim boo hoo. Was really looking forward to it. On the way home I stopped at Dairy Queen and got 3 cool ice cream treats for me, my wife and grandaughter. Sat around the house and ate the ice cream then had a plate of pasta. . Granddaughter fell asleep so I carried her downstairs and manhandled her up into the top bunk. Not much of a workout but lots of fun. |
