No PR here, but did run one of my fastest marathons this year (5:45ish) on a challenging and spectacularly beautiful course. Colorado: done! Now if II survive the 14 hour drive home it's taper time!

Question for the group:

I finally got a HR monitor a few weeks ago and have started logging some HR data.  Here's the data from today's 8.25 mi. run.  It was four laps on the trails at one of our county parks.  I like the consistency of my pace (even though it's slow), but my HR seems like it's higher than it should be for a long run.  The problem is, to keep my heart rate lower, I'd practically have to walk--a lot.  Now, keep in mind that these distances are uncharted territory for me and I've only been running since January.  So, should I stop worrying about it and just run, or should I slow down and walk some on these long runs even if I don't feel like I need to?  My goal is to build over the winter and do my first 1/2 mary in April. Any thoughts??

High relative to what?  have you done a test to determine your LT?  if not, doing these loops are you conversational? or huffing and puffing and not able to carry on a sentence or two?

Well - what fatty said - if you are like me than the max HR number looks to be when you are hitting a hill.  I don't worry too much about the MHR when i look back over my garmin info - my body will slow me down if my HR gets too high going up a hill.  Your AHR doesn't look too far off mine when I am doing a long run.  It gradually creeps up over time like yours.  I have never had a LT running test done, but the fact that you can run 8 miles or almost 90min at that rate says to me that you are below your LT by more than a touch.  How did you feel when the run was done - did you feel a bit tired or were you completely gassed? There-in lies your answer...

Dirt, and chipped wood as a base.  Some areas are single track and some are about 3 ft. wide.  No big hills just a few small ups and downs.  Is that what you mean??

Suzy, no I've never had any LT testing done.

Andy,  I felt good still on the 3rd lap (4.5-6.5 mi range).  I had been telling myself that I would allow myself to walk the hills on the last lap, but when I got to them I didn't feel like I NEEDED to, (I wanted to :-) so I kept moving.  The last 1.5 miles were just one foot in front of the other and looking forward to stopping.  My glutes and hamstrings were the most fatigued.  I was pretty "gassed".  But then again, who knows, maybe I could have gone another lap.  Like I said this is getting into uncharted territory.  Back in April I ran my first nonstop 30 minutes.

Congratulations to Rachel, DJ, and Brent on their PRs! Andy, congrats on your first 10k and amazing weight loss. Roni, congratulations on finishing Rim Rock, and the long drive home! Loved the pictures!

Jayne - I wouldn't focus too much on heart rate right now as you build your run volume. As long as you feel like you could maintain a conversation and you're able to hold your pace through the length of the run, you're probably doing okay. If your breathing is labored and/or you're crashing in the later miles, you're probably running too hard. Are you following a training plan right now or just building volume? FWIW, I'd avoid speed work and just focus on safely building volume with easy running.
