Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Fred D - 2012-01-19 9:27 AM rymac - 2012-01-19 9:19 AM Hey great goals. The only one I will ask about is the HIM not for the time to question you, but rather what is the course like? 4:45 on a flat course can be relatively less impressive than 5:25 on a hilly course (think Savageman HIM). I've gone 4:38 before, but my 5:26 at Savageman was a better race in truth. My goals: To be honest I really just want to have fun and race hard. Of course, I hope to be capable of some of these: HIM: Sub 4:45 (possibly 4:40 if the stars aligned) Oly: Sub 2:15 10K: 38:45 15K: Sub 1 hr
Yeah Fred. It is definitely race specific. My race in June is pretty flat and fast. Wind is the only real issue. I really do not race to a time when I am out there and take what the day gives me. I am partial to time goals but was playing along |

![]() | ![]() Got my strength training in this morning, despite the dog trying to get in my way, and got the bike configured for outdoors for this afternoon (ie changed the rear wheel). In the 70's, perfect day to get outside. Sorry Fred, can't relate to that darkness thing you mentioned. lol ![]() |

Champion![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I can honestly say that I have never pushed myself to the breaking point in either training or racing. I seem to have a built in limiter that when i get close to really putting myself in a bad spot, I just slow down or back off a bit. To be honest, I just don't care enough about a race to put myself in a hospital. To some who don't know me as well as others that might seem suprising based on my results. But I have always maintained that I love to train, racing is a bit of a hassle. I have never crossed a finish line and needed medical attention and usually feel pretty spiffy not too long after. To some that would be a race where they might be dissapointed in. Not me. I'm not in this to be hooked up to IV's, I do this for fun. What I do differently then many, however, is excel in preperation before a arce so I can have good results without having to go through hell to get them. |

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Fred D - 2012-01-19 10:06 AM rymac - 2012-01-19 9:35 AM Wow that is very scary. That sounds much worse than my race. Truthfully even pros have families too, so sometimes they pull out as well....Fred D - 2012-01-19 5:13 AM When your race derails itself and you feel truly awful, early on in the bike is it better to push through or is it better to just call it a day and fight again another time? I ask this because some of you know about Chris G. Over on slow twitch. Chris was my age, a professional, kids same age, same speed/abilities and he died during the Philly marathon last year. Was he feeling the same way? What was going on with him? He was healthy and there were a lot of parallels IMHO. There is part of me now that would actually pull out of that Wisconsin race as I am quite convinced something was wrong with me that day and that my primary jobs are father, husband and then physician, ie; not triathlete. I still have some confusion about whether I did the right thing and what I would do again. Not REGRET, nope, rather just re-evaluation. Lemme know your thoughts. PS this is not an attempt to have everyone say 'you did the right thing Fred' but rather an open ended discussion as it may happen to you some day, in fact it probably will (horrible day, ot what happened to Chris G. Obviously) Interesting and a topic that hits home for me. I went through a horrible experience at Muncie HIM in 2010 and scared the hell out of my wife. The weather in Muncie is notoriously hot in July for this race. Needless to say I was naive to the whole thing. The forecast was 85, sun, humid! The water was 80 degrees. I paced the bike pretty well in my opinion staying within my HR zones and cruising along. I got off the bike feeling great. It was hot as hell on that run. The humidity just fried me and there was no wind to cool me off. Anyway, I was passing people like crazy on the run. About mile 9 or so I started to consider walking because I was so hot. No way was I going to walk...I can rest at the finish (I say to myself). Little did I know that I was in some serious danger. I was approaching the finish line and my wife saw me coming..less than a quarter mile from the finish. I was weaving all over the road and clearly disoriented. I went down. Could have thrown a baseball to the finish and finished 3rd AG. My core temp was 105. Ice bath and 2 days in the hospital. It absolutely terrified my wife seeing me like that. I did no HIM's last year because I did not want her to worry about me while I was racing. Now I have a little girl. It made me realize what I was doing this for. I am not a pro triathlete. I do this for fun and to put myself in that situation was stupid. There is a difference between racing hard and racing stupid. We have to make that determination...and its not an EZ one in the heat of the moment. I can honestly say I backed off a bit in some races last year on the run becuase that day still haunts me a little bit. I think ultimately we have to remember why you are doing the sport. We are not pros. We do it for fun. I would say today that race gave me perspective. Very true. I was actually thinking of Andrew Starkyowicz (sp?), a pro triathlete, when I wrote that. He is one of those guys that always puts it all on the line and pretty much finishes first or doesnt finish. Alot of the ITU guys have that mentality too. I think its not the right way for AG'ers who do not make a living off the sport to go about it. I was just being stubborn at the race in Muncie. Now my family doctor always calls me stubborn becuase of that incident LOL. |

Probably should have waited to see if they are actually any good, but I don't have a functioning gps watch, so I did it. Oops, now have to tell my wife lol. Ooooh I'll be very curious to see how you like it. I love my 310 and won't have a need to replace it until it kicks the bucket but the added functionality for indoor swimming sounds super cool .... |

I tend to be able to keep it reasonable too - it's just when i am 'sort of sick' i can't always tell if i should line up or not - see marathon story above. Also, i puke. It's gross but at higher exertions my stomach lets me know in a hurry to back off. It's really embarassing to be in the bushes losing all of the gel i took in because i was running too hard ... heh. |

I bought a 405 and hated it. Terrible device. I do like that I can swim with it and not have to put something on in transition. It is awesome to program for a race. I wore it for my HIM and totally forgot to pop it off with the wetsuit strippers (quick release) so took a few seconds longer to get my suit off ... |

I got it mostly cause I was already thinking of getting one of the watches to count laps (cause I can't count) and then they announced this. My 305 mostly works but every now and then throws a fit, I think due to moisture so this fit the bill for me. |

So if the big shop got their order in before me they will get theirs shipped before me. I guess I can see it from both points of view so I am putting on my patience pants and hoping mine comes soon |

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() A friend of mine and I did IM Louisville in 2010. We went there and I told him I would do the race with him. I finished the race and waited almost 3hrs for him to finish. I knew something was wrong but never realized how bad. We finished the swim minutes apart- changed in T1 together- finished the bike -within minutes of each other and on to T2 - we talked and he had mentioned he had not been able to hold any liquids since mile 80 of the bike and that he was cramping. Looking back at it now- something to be concerned! To make the long story short he ran/walked the run portion with no liquids- Honestly, I don't know how he did it and let alone imagine what kind of state his mind was in. He was rushed after the race to the med area and from I what I was told- he took 3 bags and a little of IV. Literally out of it. It truly embodies what an Ironman is all about but in retrospect, that could have been disastrous. Rymac- I don't know how that feels to be in that kind of state and literally be out of it. I am glad you pulled through and nothing major happened to you. Truly- looking back and thinking of our loved ones - makes me wonder! maybe I need to listen to Maureen more often specially when she tells me "be careful, I need you". It does.... hit home.

![]() I think we all in some way idolize or idolized the "Julie Moss Effect," that crawling over the finish line, body in total failure and cr@pping on yourself is "what makes ironman an ironman." Many of us were drawn to the sport after initially seeing that coverage which, when you think about it, is pretty distorted. That was the image of triathlon that hooked us? Also, there's the "never quit, never surrender", or "you can quit and no one will ever know, but you will know for the rest of your life" mentality. I know it's not an IM, but there's that famous ITU (?) pic of the guy spewing vomit as he crosses the line. It's as if you aren't trying hard enough if your body isn't physically rebelling against the effort. There's a difference between pushing through pain when you just want to stop and sit down and finishing a race, and pushing yourself to a point of physical danger. There is the added dimension of once you start getting dehydrated, your mental faculties ain't all there, so knowing where that line is becomes virtually impossible. And I think it happens less often with people who simply aren't prepared than with those that have prepared, and expect to finish, and for whatever reason - weather, nutrition, illness - the day starts going south. |
