![]() GoFaster - 2012-04-19 11:13 AM Thanks again James. For the valve extenders everyone uses, do you thread these and leave on while riding, or inflate and then remove the extender? Also, does anyone find a benefit to running the extender if you have a disc cover? You only use an extender with a disc cover if the rim you are covering is too deep for the valve. Basically the same principle as why you use an extender for a deep rim. The caveat being that you can't choose an extender that is too long...because you won't be able to get the inflator onto the top of the valve through the given hole in the cover. |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I used Face book to keep track of what our kids were doing. I never was very active I just checked what they were into. When the youngest hit 21 I deleted my face book. Stacy still has hers. Edited by tasr 2012-04-19 7:31 PM |

Champion![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi guys. Was on call yesterday until 11. No call till Tues now! Wooo wooo. Started watching Game of Thrones on the trainer today. Had a good day on GIM today. I had to do a presentation for my staff and residents and got told I did a good job! ![]() |

Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() | ![]() It's been a whirlwind couple of weeks for me...lots of madness going on at work and my side radio job. Been very hard to get to the pool during the limited weekday lap swim hours. Did have a nice track session this evening...definitely pushed myself and feel good about it. There also happened to be a track coach there tonight and she chatted with me after the workout and gave me some form/technique pointers. I'm glad to have something I can work on in future run sessions and hopefully see more improvement. |

![]() | ![]() ratherbeswimming - 2012-04-19 11:52 AM I say do the longer one. Nothing like a 10k brokenup by a 20 mile bike ride. DUs hurt but are fun. I think really give you both a good pacing and fitness test. It's so easy to overcook the first run. A 2.5k run is a little short, IMO, however.bzgl40 - 2012-04-18 10:24 AM ratherbeswimming - 2012-04-18 7:17 AM Ran 3.5 yesterday. Skipped track practice, but I'll go on Thursday instead. Today, it's a swim and a bike if all goes as planned! I was looking at Duathlon Nationals rules... the top 18 in each age group are invited to Worlds. Only 11 raced my age group last year. Worlds is in Nancy, France but it's the same weekend as my cousin's wedding. Guess I'll stick with the sprint instead of trying to qualify. Ha. Here is a reason to do the standard. Did you see the start times? It was very hot last year. No way I'd want to finish any later then I did last time. Plus you would miss the fun hill they put at the end of the run. My AG is stacked. But it did roll down to me last year. But I only race as a Canadian so I declined. Still up in the air. I've got until Sunday to decide! I kind of just want to get it over with, but I'm not sure I'm ready for the Olympic distance. Logs are up to date - what say you, Fred's mentor group? Sprint: 2.5k run, 17k bike, 2.5k runs, starts at noon. Could place well. Distance is doable. Olympic: 5k run, 35k bike, 5k run, starts at 8:45am. Based on last years times, could be last in my AG, should qualify for Worlds anyway - but can't go. Distance is a bit long for my recent training... I think. HTFU and go long? Or suffer in the heat and go short? |

Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Oddly enough I was just looking at the price of Pro Race tyres and came across this deal for Pro Race 4's: http://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/sp/road-track-bike/Michelin-tyres-Road-Tri-Track-folding-Michelin-Pro-4-Race-Service-Course-Folding-Tyre/MICHTYRF209 Not sure what the delivery costs to USA are, but $35 each (if you spend over $55) sounds pretty good to me! Since I'm here I may as well mention my rather surprising swim last night. The last part of my workout was 2x100m trying to set the best average time with 1:00 rest. I figured that the rest was quite long so I could push fairly hard on the first 100 without impacting on the second too much and finished with a time of 1:45 - 2secs off my best! So I wondered what I could manage if I really pushed and came in at 1:39! I know I'm supposed to be tapering for Sunday, but I couldn't pass up an opportunity like that.
Edit:Just noticed if you go for the all black tyre it goes down to $33 Edited by sicone 2012-04-20 5:35 AM |

Pro![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() hour on the bike this AM, first time i have been on the TT bike this year....and first time ever for the new bike. This thing rides really nice, i was really impressed.
In the pool tonight, slowly working my distances up in it, i am looking at 2500m tonight. 3 hour ride on tap for tomorrow and a ride to be determined for Sunday |

![]() | ![]() My turn for starting primary on call. I get a week of it. Already know I have to work Sunday night but that is for my own state. Got some emergency stuff I need to get in. I should hopefully still be able to get some workouts in though. They just all have to be close to the house. Pretty boring on the bike but I think I decided on a nice loop. |

Pro![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I went to track practice again last night. If this doesn't kill me, it's going to make me super-fast! Not sure what I'll do today, I've been itching to swim, but I have a Dr's appointment after work at 4... Saturday, I'm riding out to Biosphere 2, and meeting to boyfriend there for a tour. I'm still up in the air about going short vs. going long next weekend... gotta decide by Sunday! |

They aint no Gator Skins....... http://www.biketiresdirect.com/product/michelin-pro3-race-tire I'll see your good price and raise you one better. http://www.probikekit.com/ca/tyres-tubes/clincher-bicycle-tyres/michelin-pro-3-race-road-tyre.html Plus if you use the coupon MIDSEASON15 right now, you get another 15% off + free shipping. For some things PK simply can't be beat. (Shipping into Canada I have not yet - knock on wood - paid taxes or duty). Looks like they are out of black though. Or step up to the Pro4 and get it for $40 after discount + free inner tube (worth $5-6 each). These are the Service Course, so not the fastest of the new Pro 4's. To Fred's point, the 3 is not the best clincher out there, but if I read some of the numbers correctly in the past the differences were very tiny. Admittedly, it's been a while since I looked at them closely. |

Elite![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() To all the tire experts out there. What do you feel is the best tire out therefor overall racing and training? I have been using the GP4000's for the past 6 years and have like them, but they are so expensive. $70 each last time I got them and they only last 2,000 miles if lucky. Had one last a week when I blew out the side wall. Looking for ideas. |

Got my last one from REI using my rebate and 20% coupon. But they go on sale at Performance a fair amount. I find they are fairly puncture proof. |

Also, does anyone find a benefit to running the extender if you have a disc cover? Can't watch the video at work, but one fial question. If you flat, do you remove the extender, then take out the tube, replace tube and add extender, and inflate. OR, do you remove tube and extender together and then add extender to new tube before putting it on the rim. Sorry - just trying to wrap my head around how this works. To Fred's point about plumber's tape, will you carry your spare with some tape already on the valve? |

![]() | ![]() Fred D - 2012-04-20 9:45 AM Anyone have any thoughts on dogs attacking on the bike or run? Tom D. Has a few thoughts. On a serious note this is an issue that troubles me. I don't have a great strategy to defend against dogs except that the routes I ride tend to not have many dogs. What strategy do you use? I've been pretty lucky in this regard it would seem. I do have one dog that I think breaks out of his backyard and chases me when I run but one yell at him to stop and the guy puts on his breaks so fast it is kind of funny actually. A single dog is way less worrisome then a pack. I would try vocal first, then water bottle if I was on the bike. After that I'd probably wing it |

None - they are too fast. Last year a dog was in it's frontyard on a country road as I came by at a good pace. He started keeping pace with me at 40kmph till he ran out of space. All I was thinking is that if he wanted to catch me, he could, at which point I don't think there is much to do but kick at it. Alternatively, I also hope that he may be faster than me, but I can outlast his speed before he catches me.
