Nope, I know exactly what you mean. This is one that I have seen, but even it is not what you are talking about.  I put 'speedwork' in quotations, because I know I am not really for the 'real deal'.  But I wasn't sure if even throwing in some shorter fast repeats were in order.  I am totally cool with keeping on with what I am doing, because it is working.  To be honest, I may never get far past 'base' training--my body may not tolerate it.  I have an athletes mind and spirit; my tendons and joints wanna sit on the couch... Laughing

This will be my pyramid!

I like Skiba's  two story house better. There is the aerobic conditioning at the bottom (where Base training is in this one). Then Threshold* is the 1st floor ceiling/2nd floor flooring. VO2 max is the 2nd floor ceiling. Then peak  power output is the very peak of the roof. When things start to push up there can become crowding, as in not enough headroom. It's hard to lift everything at once, so more specific training of the higher level is in order. If you try to pull too much at the top, the house is not very strong and will be stretched too thin without the support of the lower levels. He doesn't attach specific training percentages like this example does though. It'll vary by person, by where they are in their training, and what they're training for.

*Technically he calls it Critical Power, but the concepts are close enough in meaning to get the general idea of what's going on.

Oh healing vibes sent.

Emotional roller coast this week for me too.  My younger sister (drama queen) sends me a message to say dad very down not sleeping convinced he has cancer again and is dying.  I'm getting ready to book a flight home!

Speak to parents, not very forthcoming...but dad very jolly as usual.  Older sister gets onto it (the opposite of the younger) all is fine, dad just had a bad night's sleep and got to worrying and is fine.  Any developments that require a flight home she will let me know!

Geez.

Yesterday I was riding home with the echoes of the Salty's el ride running through my head. A pretty picture it wasn't. But I did end up with a limerick, which Salty asked for. So, here is the start of the stoopid that came to me while I rode yesterday.

"There once was a girl in Seattle

While running she was rarely frazzled

On a train ride a perv

got on her one last nerve..."

I'm sorry, but these are the things that run through my empty noggin while I am trying to push through intervals. I hope everyone has a great day and continues to smile in the face of whatever challenge you may have.

If we're doing limericks she has to be from Nantucket

Thanks for a chuckle to start the day Chris. I'm in southern New Mexico badly in need of a decent cup of coffee. What are the chances I'll find one in a city called Truth or Consequences?

Ok, runny people, need some advice for my HM at the end of Sept.    I have been running 5-6 days per week since the end of March, I am currently at aboot 36km/week (~21miles).

I have a goal time of 2 hours.  I am wondering if some 'speedwork' will be of some benefit, and if so, what a relative beginner should start with.  I'm not talking about Salty speedwork here, but are some race pace mile repeats likely to be of benefit?  Or more steady state tempo runs?

I'd worry more about getting your miles up than anything.

I also highly recommend doing a long run over the HM distance for your best results (14-16.) Once you have the mileage to support that (you don't want your long run to be more than 60% of your weekly mileage), and you prove that your body is holding up well, then you can think about the speedwork.

In the meantime, if you want to throw in some harder effort running (like do a few WU miles then some hard effort than some CD) go for it. But getting those miles up is going to make the most impact.

I'm sorry, I'm so insensitive. Substitute everything I said for KM. What's the word? Weekly kilometerage?

LOL!  Bah, we still say mileage.  We like to throw you folks a bone occasionally.

Ok, so just some tempo stuff here and there then.  I still don't understand how running consistent, 'easy' kilometers (Innocent) translates to running a race at a faster pace, but I have experienced it, so will keep on keeping on.

Jumping back here for a sec, I also like running on hills. Not saying hill repeats here, but just including a number of them on at least some runs. Not sure of your area, but some of us have to look for them and think about this to make sure to get them in. For uphills, there isn't a need to go crazy, just at least enough to know there is a hill there. Beyond that is how you feel like pushing yourself that day. For downhills, try to keep them to a lower grade when possible, but don't beat yourself up trying to find that all the time. Just take it easy some more when they're more than 3% or so.

Uh oh, no I will probably spend way too much time trying to come up with a closing line to your limerick!

For those working with heart rates whilst running, I found a nice little article you may be interested in http://www./2013/03/how-heart-rate-zones-work/Also has a lot of other good info on the site, and some pod casts.

So... yeah... Thanks to Urban Spoon I find a decent looking coffee shop in T or C. Clean looking place with a decent beverage menu. So I walk up to the counter and order a large hot dirty chai... and the old dude at the corner table snorts his coffee out his nose :-o

Hola from somewhere near Hades. Seriously tired of the heat...and I've got to do an LT test tonight that I've been putting off for...ummmm, well, ever since I heard of it. Yell I've got test anxiety. My motivation to get it done was to buy some new workout clothes today.

Ever just bump into odd people in random places? I've had several in the past couple of weeks. Not quite like Salty's, although one today might be a second cousin. Today, had my toddler with me and I was trying on clothes. I heard a man and his adult daughter--"Holy shyte, dad!" is how I know -- outside the room (single dressing rooms sit in the middle of the store), but wasn't paying much attention to proximity. I finished and opened the door to push the cart out...he must've been standing a foot from the mirror because I almost hit him. I said sorry and he said, "It's okay. Didn't they tell you these are two-way mirrors? Lookin good!" Sigh. Being humorous and being creepy is just such a fine line.

Looking at a new mountain bike...mine is a 2003/4? Kona...and there are some good deals we've seen. Likely narrowed down to Specialized or Felt. Oh boy!

So now I need to catch up on the rest of Podnews.

Wait - did I read that right?  Are you being serious?  2 way mirrors in a dressing room?  What store is that and what were they thinking?  I've never heard that.

Good thing you weren't going commando!
