Here’s my week so far report: 2 short runs, one group ”strength” session, I hate group training but that way at least I get it done. One very short swim in the lake (which is getting colder, but still OK 13C) to test my new wetsuit. That’s it. A short ride is on the cards today after work. Re age group, it gets easier to podium once you are over a certain age here in Sweden. . Won a bronze medal in Sprint Duathlon at the Swedish championships 3 years ago. Yes you guessed it, only 3 in my AG (45-49 then). I finished about 20 minutes behind the first two. It was cool to be part of the medal ceremony but it’s a shame really that we were so few. |

Those trials have been going on for a while, South Australia and West Australia have been trialing since early September at least. The Australian states are all acting like separate countries over covid, totally different rules and hard boarders between them. Look up the great wall of Coolangatta to see how insane it has got over there. For the apps your talking about, my understanding is it is only for people who have to self isolate, i.e. recent arrivals from overseas or positive cases of covid. not for the general population. The current alternative is being locked in a hotel room for 14 days, so as invasive as the app is, it is relative freedom I suppose. But I agree 100% with you that it's insane. Anything involving that level of government surveillance on it's own population needs to be strongly resisted. We don't have anything like that here, all incoming travelers, and all positive cases are placed in managed quarantine facilities i.e. repurposed hotels, managed and guarded by the Army. Letting people isolate at home would be far to free for our Dear Leader to allow. Which is one reason that I have never had and do not intend to get a coivd test, even if I had symptoms. Being locked in a hotel room for 2 weeks (plus however long to be 72 hours symptom free) with Mrs Bullfrog and 2 small children sounds unbearable. In this part of the world we (or at least the decision makers) are still pretending that covid is not going to be endemic, and if we isolate we can avoid it. Meanwhile the lockdown costs a billion dollars a week as we try to delay the inevitable... In happier news, 4 zwift rides in the evenings and 2 quick runs before work so far this week. So that's an improvement on consistency for me. Just have to keep it going now. |

Did a workout 6 out of 7 days, 5 zwift rides for 2:30, and 3 runs for 1:35. Not a lot of duration, but much better frequency. And thoroughly enjoyed being able to run with a mate, followed by coffee and talking , on Saturday morning. The run was poos, but having some sort of social interaction was brilliant. Today is Mrs Bullfrogs birthday, so I'll be taking Monday off. And likely Sunday off too, as 1 workout free day on the weekends is a goal going forwards, to help keep the family/life balance in check. So for the coming week, my goal is 5 days of 2 workouts a day. Run in the morning, bike in the evening Tuesday - Saturday. Again, frequency is more important than duration, so I really want to be finishing the week with 9 or 10 workouts complete. Hope everyone had a good weekend. |

Regular 1774 Auckland, North Island | Subject: RE: Beer Drinkers Appreciation Society (BDAS) --Always Open Today is the end of our 9th week of lockdown (currently the harshest restrictions in the world we are gleefully told from the podium of truth), day 63, and at yesterdays press conference Dear Leader announced that we will be getting AT LEAST 2 more weeks. To be honest they have broken me, it is now really starting to get to me and I just do not see the light at the end of this tunnel. I've had some depression issues in my past, and after last night fu*k it, it's all to much. Mondays zwift ride was replaced with pizza. This mornings run was replaced with staying in bed. The worst thing, is the idiots in charge still seem to think that, unlike every other country on the planet, we can 'control the virus' and some how magically cases will drop, then we can be free. So it's not going to be 2 weeks is it... it'll be another 2, then another and so on until we have full on riots in the streets. My motivation (for everything, not just triathlons) has been completely sucked out of me. |

But don’t go down that rabbit hole, it’s dangerous and hard to get out of. Stay the course, stick with the plan, just like Ironman training, you’ve got this, one day at a time. Take this as an “opportunity” to become better. Zwift, keep running with your friend, check in with Mrs. Bullfrog (happy birthday to her!), check in with friends, keep connections with others alive. Now it’s more important than ever. I’d imagine a lot of people are feeling the way you are there and it’s so important to reach out to each other. We took a lot of family walks because they were allowed during shutdown. I feel like you’re Tom Hanks on Castaway. But please don’t start talking to volleyballs. I’ll even get my race report up to give you something to do. Haha. Praying for your country. I hope you can start getting some of your freedoms back soon. |

I’ll post bike porn as soon as I can via mobile phone. I only got to take an inaugural 4 mile ride the day I got it, then we had company over the weekend and horrible weather through Monday and I left Monday night for work. I don’t get back until next Monday. Gosh, I ordered the bike back in March/April. |

The color changed twice and it became, this is what we’ve got, do you still want it, for color. I’m excited to finally get to ride it… at some point.. when I get home. The handlebars are nice and beefy, thick and huge hoods on them. I love the feel, very comfortable. I did manage a road ride in KY yesterday, it was weird to wear regular bike shorts again (diaper feeling) and sitting upright. I’ve only been on the tri bike for the last six months. Edit to add: so I can see the links on my iPad to open, but not on my phone. Weird. Short version of the story is as we approach the end of week 10 of lockdown, we are in for at MINIMUM, another 5 weeks of this shite. Dear leader wants us to be the world leaders again, so we need 90% vaccination rates (double jabbed of course). Not only in total, but every individual district in NZ must reach the target.... realistically never going to happen. But rejoice, on November 29 we will get another announcement. They will look at how we are going, and might wiggle the numbers a little... so my only hope now is that at the end of November, when we are in the late 80s vaccinated Dear Leader will admit defeat and allow us plebs our Christmas. I think the worst part of it, is this isn't something new that should be a panic for governments anymore. I look around the world and see life pretty close to normal. Packed stadiums at NBA opening night, full house at EPL games. Friends on facebook off on holidays. Even our fellow hermit kingdom Australia opening up progressively at 70% vaxed. But here... nothing on the horizon but eternal lockdown, restrictions and pain. Honestly if it wasn't for all our family being here Mrs Bullfrog and I would be seriously looking at leaving. If you Americans could start lobbying your congressmen to invade NZ, remove our communist overlords and give us back democracy, that would be greatly appreciated. In other news, prior to todays announcement the first 2 races of the summer Half Marathon series were delayed from this year till January and March next year. There is still a sprint tri scheduled for December, but that'll be moved soon I expect (race 1 of that series was November and is now Jan) I did stop sulking after my last post, and have been on zwift in the evenings since then. Morning runs, not so good but I hope to do some over the weekend. Last thing, New Zealand is playing the USA in rugby this weekend, in Washington DC. I bet a case of your regions finest craft beer with every American here on NZ. In all seriousness, if you can find it on TV, watch the game. Should be entertaining. Have a good weekend every one. |

Here, not much happening trainingwise, it’s the off season so I feel off, no motivation. |

Still, we got to see the men in black score some pretty trys Training wise, happy with my week. 5 bikes, 3:30 total 2 runs, 1:30 total. 5 hours total for the week. Biggest week in the last 2 months. And more importantly, only 4 empty days in the training log the last 3 weeks. So the 'rebuild consistency' plan is coming along. This week aiming for another step forward, specifically keep the zwift rides cranking and add more pre work runs. But I'm due for my 2nd covid shot at the end of the week. From what I've heard that's the bad one so might be having a few days off depending on how it goes. Be good everyone. |

Didn’t do much this week either, a bike ride today (45 minutes), a couple of light strength sessions. That’s it. No running as my knee hurts for some reason. Been bathing (not swimming) in the lake a couple of times a week for the last few weeks, it doesn’t count as training but it’s real nice. Water temperature is still bearable (about 8 or 9 C) but I intend to keep going all winter. It’s supposed to be good for the immune system and stuff. |

Good for you or not, sounds like madness to me. I've had another ok week. Good consistency on the bike. 4 hours 30 min for the week over 6 rides. Most time on the bike since before Ironman. Running, again shite. Only 1 hour, across 2 runs. Still struggling with those early wake ups. And my running mate has had a bit of a covid scare, his partners sister has had a positive test, as he's a close contact he's got to be tested and come back negative before he's allowed out. So no social run this week. Overall for the month, I wanted to work on frequency, and consistency. Just get used to getting back into doing something. 22 rides, 10 runs over the month I think I've done that. For November, I really need to get the run numbers up, but October was a definite step back in the right direction. How did everyone else do? |

Good for you or not, sounds like madness to me. I know, when I first heard about it, it sounded like madness too but I’ve always been weirdly tempted to try. So when the OW swimming season ended a couple of months ago, and the lake started to cool down, I kept going to the lake once a week at least for a little refreshing bath. When I started, the water was around 12 C and as I am getting used to it, the temperature getting lower is not a problem. It’s a real nice feeling. I don’t stay very long, I timed myself yesterday and the whole thing was over in 10 minutes, with one minute at a time with water over the shoulders. I don’t put my head in anymore, since last week’s major brain freeze! Coincidence or not but I haven’t had a migraine/headache since I started…. |

It's been a month since my tri and I have failed to do a race report yet, but will try to do one this week. Work is out of control so I'm just hanging on for dear life. Enjoying the Peloton life, although with work so crazy last week I didn't get much in, and then I have been sick since Saturday (not COVID thank god). Got my booster but you hear about so many breakthrough cases so I got tested just to be sure. Haven't run at all. I am doing a race called the Seneca 7 in April, which will be my next run race, so I might take a few months off from running and start back up in Jan/Feb. Need to get back in the pool, but I'm going to Miami next weekend for the Ravens/Dolphins game, so might just wait until after that. So for now will just focus on my Pelly workouts. Did a 30 minute ride yesterday and did some strength this morning (core and glutes and legs). Still a bit stuffy but think it's just a bad cold. |

Nathalie, your "baths" sound quite chilly, but that's amazing you haven't had any headaches/migraines. I used to love ice baths in college, although I only ever went up to just below my bum. Definitely has really good health benefits. Andrew, so glad to hear you're doing better. I definitely remember moments of complete frustration during our lockdown. Hopefully in a few weeks your country is able to open up again, at least to some normalcy. But way to crush those workouts and get back into a groove! You had a great October, so now time for an even better November! |

I think I mentioned my BIL was in the hospital with West Nile...well they confirmed that and he eventually succumbed to the complications so we've been dealing with all of that. We had a huge party for him here at the house which was a great time all considered. Now dealing with the estate (that's being probated in Texas) which is a new hassle. Work is also insane for me - big project implementation in a couple of weeks moving our sales process to some new platforms. Sales people are SO high-maintenance. We also traveled to a wedding in Hilton Head in mid-October and spent a week in Orlando last week (I worked pretty much the whole vacation unfortunately) as well. So, I'm out of shape physically and mentally. I started my 2022 training plan yesterday, that runs through the end of May. It's triathlon-oriented so we'll see how my back holds out running-wise. Two days in and so far so good, though this week is only a Prep week so everything is easy and just getting used to the schedule...but I got up at 5:30 AM on a Monday so that's a victory! @Andrew: Man, I don't know what to say other than I would share your frustration. At this point we know so much more about this disease plus with the vaccine success there's so little point in shutdowns anymore other than if you have really small hotspots. I really liked how we handled it here in Maryland (in the US every state had a different plan more or less). Glad you're trying to hang in there through it all and keep your head up. @Jenn: yay new bike!!! @Nathalie: 9* C is nuts, even with a wetsuit. I like your approach of slowly acclimating, but you have heard the story about the frog in the pot of warming water, right? @Nicole: I'll be hitting up Masters probably early December, or at least when I feel like I'll physically survive a practice. I haven't swam in about six weeks and I don't have the background to just jump back in - but I'll get there. Cheers to a great November everyone with my favorite new lighter IPA! |
