oh hum, I suppose it would be bad to spend the 1st day of 2010 skipping my scheduled workout eh?  Blah, off to the trainer I go.  I really am not looking forward to the 15 30" intervals, but I suppose the time will fly.

It's been downpouring for two straight days here in Oregon City.  Rain is normal, but we usually just get a daily non-stop drizzle.

Happy 2010 everyone. I plan to log my first workout of the year once I'm recovered from conjunctivitis and a sinus infection. It was 70 degrees here today and I was itching to get out for a ride or run.

Quick question...... How do ya'll keep your feet from freezing when riding in the winter. It was 37 degrees when we started today and 41 degrees at the end of the ride and my toes were numb. I was using wool winter riding socks and might as well have been sock less.

If it is really cold and/or wet I use neoprine booties that just slip on over my regular shoes.  They can make you feet sweat though and if your out long enough you might still get cold.  I've started carrying a second pair of socks.  I also have some covers that slip on over half my shoe that cut the wind which are warm enough for chilly days if it is dry.  If it is REALLY cold I use both.

I was taught not to hate, so I will just say I seriously dislike you for throwing this out thereWink.  Just finished it and you were right...it was about 19min and 45sec of torture.  LTHR=180.  I probably won't watch the HR on my runs too much, but it will be interesting data to look at afterwards to see what zones I am training in.

bzgl40 - 2009-12-30 3:47 PM Ok, so who wants to suffer?  I need to do a LTHR running test and think if I am going to go suffer you all should go suffer as well.

Ha, good job.  Yeah, I don't plan to watch my HR on the run (not even on the display) but it will be interesting to see how my runs match up to it, but more important to see what the improvement is on my next test in about 6 weeks.  In theory for the same LTHR you'll go further.

If you end up trying the soak out let me know how it works out.  I would worry about the fit in my shoe.  I don't have a whole lot of spare room in there and if the shoe ends up too tight that makes you cold as well.  I have some neoprene soaks that I have used in my mountain bike shoes but I never felt that they kept my feet warm.  That's actually why I went with the neoprene cover, which is thicker and allowed me to pair that with a better sock.

Well, we've been quiet today and are in danger of slipping to page 2.  Gonna fix that.

Question up for the bike guru's....I have a gift certificate for trisports and am thinking about spending it on clip-on aero bars.  No tri-bike in the 2010 budget.  I am currently riding a Specialized Roubaix Comp. When it's not fricking freezing I ride on rolling hills and don't really need aero, but many of my races are at the shore where it's flat, flat, flat. I was looking at the Profile Design Jammers.  Any suggestions?

Whew thanks for saving us I'm back from my last vacation for a while, I hope everyone will be more active in the thread starting tomorrow!

The profile design bars are some of the most configurable on the market. The different hand gripping styles really comes down to personal preference.  I personally prefer the S-bend bars (profile T2+) but have many friends that won't touch the S-bends and love the jammer style.  The only issue I ever had with the profile bars was due to my weight so I doubt you'll have a problem, I kept breaking the aeropads and I finally got a metal version of the plastic pad and haven't had an issue since.

Why don't you want to ride aero on rolling hills??? Aero downhill is actually more benificial than flat... I also ride uphill in aero unless the hill is huge and I'm out of gears.

Grocery bags work good too, wear them over socks inside of shoe and tuck in the ends after you tie them around your leg or bad things happen. Right Justin?

Eric, thanks for the response.  I've been hesitant about riding aero because I have some C4/C5 spinal degeneration (old sports injuries) and am a little concerned about neck pain.  One of the reasons I bought the Roubaix Comp is the more upright geometry/ride.  I figure clip ons are a relatively inexpensive way for me to try it out.  Weight wise, shouldn't be a problem although the H1N1 bout did not result in holiday weight loss.  bummer.

I am in the same boat.  I just bought a new bike and made it a road bike since 80% of my ride time in the summer is long group rides so my plan is to get clip on aero bars as well.  I need to do it soon too so i can get a fit.  I talked to a lot of folks who have them on their road bike and the overwhelming opinion is to not get the ones that flip up.  They apperently rattle a lot and the pins come loose.  I've read that on this forum as well.  So I haven't decided what to get yet but for sure not ones that flip up.

I have tried that as well the only down fall is it generates moisture and in turn your feet will get cold after a while. I've also used aluminum foil in toes, then a wool sock, then a grocery bag on top of that and put another wool sock- that was the worse combo I've ever done. 45 min into the ride I was NUMB. btw.... thanks for the comment on the video swim.

Happy New Year to all, and I hope everyone had a great holiday.

I just got back from the holiday break this afternoon.  Been snowboarding, skiing, and snowshoeing for 9 of the last 10 days, and somehow managed to not break anything.  Ready to get into a good SBR routine beginning tomorrow, as in spite of all the snow sports I feel like I've been sedentary.  Too much beer, maybe.  That's one of my 2010 goals:  cut back on the beer 'considerably' (I prefer my abstinence goals to be somewhat vaguely defined).

Ken and I are both gimpy today - My ITB really flared up after my first post Christmas run yesterday and Ken's really bothered him on his run today.  Lots of laying around and football watching.

Has anybody used one of these?http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000OQLUZ4/ref=s9_simp_gw_s0_p200_t1?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=18CDWNZ88M6G6RB3545D&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=470938631&pf_rd_i=507846

I figure it's not very pricey so might be worth a shot?
I am very worried about my half in 2 weeks.

I've been having a tender spot on the ball of my right foot for the last 2-3 days and I just figured it was a little bit of bruising from a pebble I had in my sock on NYE. It hadn't stopped me and didn't hurt that bad so I didn't really pay it much attention. This morning after my ride I decided to check it out a little more and found a little black dot... Splinter and it has been festering for the last three days... I decided to have a little swim and soften the skin to make removal a little easier. Sadly it also softened the splinter and now I have a half size splinter infecting the sole of my right foot.... yay... Hurts to put any weight on it. I will give it tonight to settle down and try again in the morning with a needle and tweezer...
