wow, mylissa...  that is QUITE a week!!  sorry your little ones are sick.  we had RSV here last week, not fun!  the kids were all really ill.  i think it's been a particularly bad year for RSV from what i hear...  hope everyone is feeling better soon so you can enjoy your trip! we are actually headed to orlando next month!

here's my plan for the week:
M - rest day
Tu - 1 hr spin class
W - swim (14 mins)
Th - 1 hr spin class
F - run (14 mins)
Sa - masters swim (my long swim)
Su - run (14 mins)

i just noticed that my BT training schedule really shortens the length of workouts the last week of every month.  i'll most likely add a little more time to my run and swim workouts.

thanks for all the comments about gels and gus!  i think i'll bring some with me even though i'm only doing 2 sprint tris b/c they are small enough to fit in my insulin pump spibelt and i might need them not so much for "fueling" purposes, but in case my blood glucose is low and i need some fast-acting carbs.

Good call on taking some gels with you!

As for the cut backs weeks - do what makes you feel comfortable but just as a 'so you know' most training plans follow a build/rest kind of philosphy.  On higher volumes it seems to be build for two weeks then have an easy week and then build again.  Do you see that kind of progression?  Just listen to your body - usually if I am following a plan I need the cut-back week by the time it rolls around.  You're pretty fit so you may be feeling awesome ...

Keri, thats some serious volume! Not really sure how those of us with busy kids are making this happen - but somehow it does. Kristen, I've had the same question with my plan - this is my last full training week and he calls it 'hard' week, but it really doesn't feel so long. I had been adding a run, since Keri suggested that to get my legs under me...but I dont think I'll be able to add a run this week.
Heres this week:

Sunday: rest
Monday: 1 hour bike HR level I (rescheduled from weekend) actually 36m (freezing!!!)
Tuesday: 35 swim, 20 strength
Wednesday: 45 bike, 40 run, possible OWS
Thursday: 30 swim, 20 strength, OWS
Friday: off
Saturday: test tri - 20 swim, 40 bike, 20 run
Sunday: rest

And here's my volume
February's totals:
Bike:3h 46m 30s  - 53.39 Mi
Run:6h 28m 20s  - 32.12 Mi
Swim:4h 14m 02s  - 6625 Yd
Strength:2h 05m

January's totals:
Bike:5h 37m  - 53.22 Mi
Run:6h 51m 40s  - 30.45 Mi
Swim:5h 11m  - 7700 Yd
Strength:1h 25m
Yoga:1h 00m

I hear you on the down weeks. I am feeling a little run down now, I just got to get through this week with a long run of 29, with 16 at marathon pace, and then I get a recovery week which I feel I badly need now. I don't know, I mean i had this crappy run yesterday because of the weather and a busy weekend coming up and I am sick and tired of getting up at 5 am to get my weekend workouts in.

The feeling will pass.

juniperjen - 2011-02-28 1:14 PM Mylissa: that sounds like a busy week!!! It is awesome that your tri is coming up so soon!

For me this week is:

M: swim 30, bike 60
T: run intervals (10x400, I think), strength (trying out a new video)
W: swim 45, bike 35
T: run tempo, swim group
F: rest or yoga
S: run - 30k (peak week for the run)
S: bike 60-ish, i think.

Doing well this week. I may have to push my tempo run to tomorrow. WAY too busy at work right now to have gotten it done this morning. Anyway - I hope you are all doing well and I'll be able to get to some inspires and more posting tomorrow!

good job all who are keeping up with their plans.

I have backed myself into quite the corner. This week I need

14k
8k
8k
19k
23k
29k

Right now, all I have accomplished done a 14k and a 15k which means I have 51k in the next 4 days. Not improbably or imposibble by any means, just the time, damn the time.

Going for the 23k, wish me luck,

Week is going well so far...

M - rest day
Tu - 1 hr spin class
W - swim (14 mins)
Th - 1 hr spin class more like 50 mins b/c got called out of class for a diaper change Tongue out
F - run (14 mins)
Sa - masters swim (my long swim)
Su - run (14 mins)

I'm curious to see how tomorrow's short run goes.  I just bought a "spibelt" to hold my insulin pump - recommended on another BT forum for "triabetics" (diabetics who do triathlons).  I usually take my pump off when running b/c I always feel it moving around and it's annoying!  But I really should not have it off for more than an hour, which will be an issue on race day and during any long brick sessions.  Hope the spibelt does the trick tomorrow!

Wow I finally googled insulin pump. I can't believe that you workout with one of those. Here I am feeling sorry for myself because I have a little blood clot and have to have my blood taken every week and you are working out with an insulin pump. I am amazed. You are awesome!

Thanks!  It's about the size of a beeper.  I normally don't even feel it on me, except when I'm running b/c of the bouncing up and down.  I have tried so many different accessories - clipped to my waistband, velcro'd to my bra...  You name it!  And I could still always feel it either jostling around or I would just feel weighed down by it.  Someone recommended the spibelt and the company actually makes a belt for holding insulin pumps.  I was doubtful it would be comfortable b/c I've tried so many different things, but my run this morning was GREAT!  I seriously could not feel my insulin pump AT ALL!  So psyched to have finally found something that actually works!

This is a question for all you runners...  How long did it take you to train for a 1/2 marathon after first taking up running?  I would love to do a 1/2 marathon sometime in the next year or two and am looking at one that is held in October.  I'm tempted to do it this October but might be biting off more than I can chew??  Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Kristen, it took me about 26 weeks. So half a year. I first did a 10k running group which was 10 weeks and a few weeks after that ended I was convinced to do the half marathon group which was 16 weeks.  Most plans start off gently so I don't see why you couldn't build to this October.

It's all about your own comfort level, though - but what helped me decide was looking at a plan and the first few weeks were even easier than I was doing than when training for the 10k.  Take a look at plans and see if the beginning feels like it's do-able on your current fitness. Don't look too far though, the long runs sound scary at first but when you take it week by week it's suddenly very manageable.  And stay with the beginner plans, the intermediate/advanced ones seem scary too.

For example, here's Hal Higdon's begginer plan: http://www.halhigdon.com/halfmarathon/novice.htm  (he has the longest run at 10 miles - I think I did 12 when I trained - i have the plan that I could send to you if you wanted)

I did a modified 14 week training plan.  I used Hal Higdon's 10 week plan and added a couple of weeks into because I was really nervous.  The longest run I did was 11.5 miles and I did the 1/2 just fine.  When starting the plan I think the most I had run was 4 miles, you can do it!

It took me 7 months to do my first 1/2 marathon.  I first started running in March and the was a race in October that had a 6 mile option and 1/2 marathon.  After I ran my first 5K in April I thought the 6 mile race would be a nice goal, no way I could do 13.1 by October.

Over the next 6 months I did races of 4 miles, 7 miles, 10K and a 15K.  Surprise surprise I can run, and decided I could do the 1/2 and had a great time!

Never thought I could run any of those distance, but slowly increased my miles and it worked out well.  Good luck!

Thanks everyone for all the feedback on training for a 1/2 marathon!  Sounds like it's do-able.  I never in a million years would have thought I'd be considering this if you asked me a year ago...

Robby - The one I'm actually thinking of doing is the Mohawk Hudson River/Marine Corps Reserves 1/2 Marathon in Albany on Oct 9th.  My parents still live in the area and I hear the course is either flat or downhill, which is nice for a first-timer like me!  Have you ever run this race?

I went for a nice run outside today, FINALLY!  It's about 50 degrees here!!

It took me about 5 months. Started in January, suffered through my first HM in May. For me it was not an overly fun experience. I was fat and out of shape and fat (oh did I say that twice). It took me 2:18. lol, on Thursday I did a 23k training run with a 21k split of 2:05 (anyway I toot my own horn).

You have lots of time, you need to get your long runs in though. I don't remember using a plan but I do remember pushing my long run up on a weekly basis.

You are not running much. You will need to run more. But you probably know that. If it were me I would gradually increase my distance so I would be comfortable doing 40k in a week running 5-6 days per week (by say June). Then find a 3 month training program.

Actually that is probably overkill ifyour goal is just to finish, but if you could get to that point you would be well prepared and finish very comfortably. I know it sounds like a lot of mileage but it really is just 3 5ks, 2 10ks, and a 15k per week (probably less than a 6 hour commitment per week)

So, yeah, start with the couch to 5k program, maybe start accelerate it a bit. The hardest part is getting to the 5k stage. Once you can run 5k on a daily basis throwing in a 10k or 15k here or there, while challenging, is very doable.

Happy Monday everyone!!

I don't mean to be so cheerful but I am so very excited!!! I bought a bike yesterday!!!  I really didn't mean to but we went to the spring bike show and sale to take a peek around and the LBS closest to me had a great deal on a Felt B12 in my size.  I forgot the picture at home.  My husband got them to throw in a fluid trainer for $50 off as well.  :D

But, I don't have it yet. I have to call to go for a fitting but you can bet that will happen quickly.

It is BEAUTIFUL but i am a little sheepish - not sure what I'll do with such a powerful bike and I know the first few outdoor rides will be pretty scary or pathetically slow.

Had a really crappy run yesterday...I remember why I run right when I get up!!!  Ran at 1:30 yesterday afternoon, after I had eaten lunch and felt sick the entire run.  No good.  The weekend was not so great.  Because of all the rain St. Louis got Friday into Saturday am our basement flooded and it is a huge mess Yell

Oh well...on a positive note I have my first race since Thanksgiving this coming Saturday and I am really excited about it!!  It is a St. Patricks Day 5 mile run.  I can't wait!!!

Hope everyone's weekend was good!
