Thanks Mike ... I'll keep this in mind for the next one.  The weather actually could not have been more perfect.  The RD allowed us to group together between a break with the swim, and my start time moved to the back.  So by the time we started ... crystal clear skies, lo 50's and warming to lo-60's ... could not have been better weather.  I'll post a RR once the results roll in. We had a lot of fun and I was extremely proud of my daughters and how they finished, so perhaps they'll do more of these in the future.

Awesome! That's really cool you got to race with your daughters.

Subject: Tips for Swim Kick?
Had a swim clinic today - was a good workout. Did a lot of drills many focusing on positions/balance/kick. Such as kick switch drill. It was clear that my kick was weak - very very weak compared to most others. Curious if anyone has tips on how to get a good kick?

Plenty of practice! I know, that's not a very helpful thing to say.

I try to concentrate on kicking from the hips with straight but relaxed knees (squeeze your butt cheeks together and visualise just kicking your thighs, not your feet).  I found Swim Smooth really useful too.  http://www.swimsmooth.com/

On your kick ... it will be a really boring few laps, but use a kick board to strengthen your kick.  I remember when I first started training, I would use just a kick board and it seemed like I was hardly moving.  So incorporate a few laps with this each session and your kick will come around.

Well ... my first race of the year is under the belt.  We had a really nice time, and the daughters and I were proud of their efforts and their results.  For me ... the overall time didn't turn out like I would have liked - but it was pretty much where I expected to end up.  Lack of training, slow transition times and bike pace to keep the girls together put the brakes on my overall time.  I did turn out a PB on the run leg, which I am excited about.

Anyway ... the RR is here: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=512218&posts=1&start=1

Loved the race report. I think it's safe to say one of the tricks of having fast transitions is not to wait for three of your kids to exit at the same time :-).

I just enjoyed reading your race report. I certainly hope you got some good pictures of the four of you. It is a lot of fun isn't it.

I'm still slow at kicking but every swim my group does we do at least 100m of kicking as part of my warm-up and often more like 200m. We can use kickboards but I usually just kick with my arms out in front of me and head under water then use a breaststroke with my arms (just enough to raise my head to take a breath) and then carry on. As time goes by I'm slowly getting stronger/faster.

I started out just using my hips but I've added back in just a few degrees of knee flexion to add a little propulsion to my kick. If your thighs start burning with your kick you're working too hard - ease up a bit.

Happy Monday everyone!

Dorm, congrats on getting the first race of the year out of the way! And I think it's great that you did it with your daughters...I am sure they have some great memories!

As for swimming/kicking, I actually heard somewhere that you shouldn't kick as much in a tri so you can save your legs. Does anyone else do this, or do most people still kick a lot?

I had some great training this weekend thanks to the beautiful weather, plus an amazing swim this morning :-) Spring is in the air!

Hey all, I haven't been around much, my apologies.  I was in Disneyland with my family just about all of last week, so didn't get much working out in...but had a lot of fun!

Also found out on Friday that I'm being moved to Chicago, which is what we were hoping for, so my family and I are very excited!  We have 90 days before we have to be there, and it should be a fun/stressful/interesting process, so this year is going to be interesting.  This does mean I'll have to cancel my Vineman regstiration though.  At least I'll get most of my money back.

I try to kick just enough to stay level.

That's one injury I haven't had yet. I googled "pt for pulled quad" and found some good stuff but the the way the first couple sites were set up, I couldn't paste a link. Basically it's rest and ice the first three days then moist heat and ease back into it.

Mike pretty much covered what to do for your pulled muscle. Hopefully you just overexerted or overstretched the muscle rather than an actual tear. How sore and/or debilitating is it?

Nicole - Like Mike says, kicking just enough to keep your feet up. In the pool I kick more to keep my feet up but in OWS I usually just do a quick double kick with each stroke and rely on my wet suit to keep my legs level.

Joe - I don't envy your moving but glad you'll be where you want to be.

All - I had a great swim yesterday and then went for a simple one hour run expecting to run my typical 8km but I wound up going 9km in the hour and I did the running without getting winded and my heart rate remained pretty low. I even sprinted the last half mile or so which I sure couldn't do last year at the end of a run. I think this was my fastest run to date. Too bad I didn't push it to 10K.

Then today in my cycling we rode a main set of 5# 5minute Zone 5 All-outs with 5minute recoveries between them. I was in my lowest gear and I was surprised to be going as fast as I could (32+kph/20mph) for each set and then in the recovery standing up and riding hard for that as well. Sure feeling a lot better than I did the last couple weeks.

We've got a local event coming up in two weeks that is quite different. It is called the "Elevator Race" and it starts at Okanagan Lake with an 8km kayaking; 20km road bike; 9km run/snowshoe; 8km(?) mountain bike; 8km Nordic ski and 3km downhill ski. It can be done as a team or solo. Total elevation gain is 6000'. It starts at the lake where there is no snow and works its way up to our local ski hill. I'd get involved but I don't know anyone interested in doing the things I wouldn't want to do. But, I do have a 10K run coming up April 13th. It's just a small Peachland event that runs along Okanagan Lake.

I'm guessing its just overexerted since its painful after a period of inactivity but once I start moving around it's OK until I try to run on it. As suggested, I'll take some time off (got a long St Patricks weekend planned) then pick it up early next week with some icing. I'm not planning a tri until mid June so no need to push it now

Sevans ... you might consider some type wrap as well.  Nothing tight - but something to just snug up the sore area, reduce vibration and help heal up the soreness.

TGIF!!!!

I missed working out the last 2 days unfortunately, so I'm hoping to get a double workout in at least tomorrow (run to and from the gym for a swim). I'm also picking up my bike from the shop tomorrow, so if the weather is nice Sunday I may take it out!

I may also dress up in some gear and have someone take a picture of me for here since I don't have a race picture to add yet!

I've had a pretty quiet few days on the training front as it's my daughter's 4th birthday and we've been doing the kids' party thing. Thank goodness it's over! A  good time was had by all and my daughter was chuffed to have friends to her home but gee, these things are tiring and I'm looking forward to a good night's sleep. Planning on a nice 8km tomorrow morning, on my own, at dawn when the world is quiet. Need some time to myself!

hi guys! this week has been mad, had to travel for work which messed up some of my training plans, but I still managed to get a few sessions in before travelling and found a pool there to do the swim set, had less time than usual, so done a shorter warm up but im just glad it wasn't a complete week wrecked.
This weekend is St Patricks weekend so there will be drinking... lol and then from Tuesday I'll start to build it up again properly, focusing on the 1st race that will be the 4th of May.

Hey Everyone,

I've been AWOL for a while... feeling frustrated with (no) training for a few weeks. Much to my chagrin, I ran a half mary today. Because I paid for it. And now I'm paying for it! Ouch! http://beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid...

Impressive you could go run a half without much training! Hope you get back to training soon.

The swim is ALWAYS a cause for concern when it comes to competing in a triathlon. This is the event for which you need to concentrate on RELAXING.
