SSMinnow - 2009-10-06 6:58 PM Tony, Doug or other bike gurus......

I may have hit a snag in the bike purchase--dreaded standover given the top tube is straight not angled.  I don't really know how to measure this, but I basically stood over my bike and figure I have about 27.5 inches of clearance and absolutely no more.  Is the chart below in mm? if so, I think that is only 698mm of clearance and I need 716.  Am I right?

Suzy this is probably not the problem you think it is. We are talking about barely more than 1/2 in of height. You do NOT need to have both feet on the ground for a bike to fit. As long as your seat can be adjusted so that your legs are NOT fully extended at the bottom of the down stroke (very simplified here), and you can comfortably get one leg on the ground when you unclip then you may be fine. Especially with a tri-bike. This is NOT a deal breaker for the P4!

Doug

P.S. With riding shoes with cleats on the 1/2 inch may not eveh exist

Thanks Doug. One of the perils of having to buy the frame site unseen.  Fortunately when Paco set my road bike up to mirror the P4, the rest worked well....happy again.

Sorry Trevor I tried to defend you but Suzy is all over you like a fat kid on a box of smarties and I am not getting on the wrong side of her. Besides I want to be on the same team as Suzy for the challenge/s.  I might have a little trouble with the run challenge because of my siatic but I'll MAN UP and take it on. As for the swim I thnk I can put in some good time to improve my times.

So now I am a fat kid who loves Smarties? .....Funny, they used to be one of my fav candies when I started marathon training.  Honestly, I am just trying to get as many people from our MG together in one place.  We have so much fun here everyday that I want some of the characters to make their way to Lonestar to keep me amused.  I hope Trevor shows, with or without his skirt!

Rob, it sounds like you and I are nursing some nagging pains.  Leg has me a little worried.  Heading to the sports med doc on Thursday just to make sure nothing major is cropping up.

I am starting to dig the wetsuit. Set another 100 yds PR this AM: 1:16! It still feels odd through the arms. That may be to the weight I have gained since I bought the suit. D'oh! Anyone have a sleeveless suit? What do you think of it?

Yes, I LOVE MY SLEEVELESS WETSUIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had real issues w/ full sleeves.  It bugged the sh*t out of me and I felt so restricted.  Whether the problem was real or imagined, I wasn't comfortable and since I don't particularly like swimming that was a big problem.

I tried the sleeveless and loved it.  We are best of friends in the water and I am much, much faster w/ it on.  It's plenty warm for me and I've been in some cold water.  And I float just fine.  It's my back end that needs help w/ floatation not my arms.

I have sleeveless and love it as well.  If there is very cold swim I use speed sleeves from QR.  They're pretty good and they don't restrict your shoulder movement.

Hey Doug,  I have a sleeveless suit and love it!  Bought it over a year ago, but never wore it until two weeks ago.  Actually did a wetsuit legal race last spring without it because I was so skeptical.  Now, I am hopeful all my races will be wetsuit legal.

Disclaimer - I have never worn a full.  I was worried about feeling a full in the shoulders so when I bought I went with the sleeveless.

BTW - Best of luck to you this weekend.  That longer bike "new and improved" course is going to suit you.  Have fun out there!!!    1st Olympic!!!!!!!!! Yea!

No racing for me until OBX on Nov. 8.  I toyed w/ doing a 5k this weekend but after my super run at the Army 10 miler I have visions of BQ times dancing in my head.  So I've decided to buckle down for these next 5 weeks and stay focused.

I've been trying to figure out if I can do the pace.  I can add 15 seconds to my pace per mile from the Army 10 miler and squeak by.  Of course, 26.2m is a lot different than 10m.  But still, I can dream.  My legs are just teasing me.  If I'd run 8:45s then I would know that my goal was impossible but 8:21s is just close enought to keep me hoping.

Of course, it all comes down to what run is in me when I wake up.  UGH!!!!  It's going to be a long 5 weeks.  I'm already getting nervous!!!!!!!!!

Hey Sam

Do you have an MP long run coming up in the next week or two (e.g 18m with last 12m at MP)?  That should give you a reasonably good idea of whether or not you can hold BQ pace for the distance.  I did a 30K race four weeks before I BQ'ed and was able to nearly hold that pace (off 2 seconds per mile) for the marathon.

No racing for me - I am the designated photographer for the hubby's race this weekend.  I have an apt with  a PT today so hopefully I'll be cleared to do some running - like maybe a marathon, give or take a few miles.....

Doug - here is a bit of advise about full wetsuits.  Someone told me to change your stroke when wearing a full.  Instead of bringing your arm through with a high elbow like we normally do, in a full wetsuit you are to bring your arm more around the side.  This saves your arms from pulling up with the elbow against the resistance of the suit.  Also, when I put on my full I always make sure it has extra gap in the shoulders and elbows and that it is more comfortable with my arms up than down.  I'll be at Jordan tonight with my Doug and some others if you want to practice.  Wind predictions at 13mph - chop chop!!

Stan - good luck with the preschool challenge. That should keep you plenty busy.

Good point Tracy, that is what I did to my stroke using a full, basically stop the stroke a bit early and it made my 1500M swim rather easy.  That is one reason also why I am getting the 2 piece wetsuit, supposed to fix all of that.

Yeah Stan, Sam and I were laughing at that, we had a lot of issues getting into preschool but nothing that crazy, good luck, sounds like you'll need it.  Remember a beer or two will help all the pain go away : )

Suzy

My last long run is Monday - 20m.  I may try that but I will say that I am much more of a game time performer.  I was so unsure of what I could do at the Army 10 miler b/c I struggle w/ my long runs and tempo runs.  I am suppsoed to be doing my long runs around 10min/miles and rarely can I do that.  I have really focused on track work which has helped my speed.  But even there I struggle.

For instance, my last track workout a week before Army, I finished up w/ 3 tempo miles which were supposed to be at
8:34.  I struggled to do a 8:40, 8:35 and 8:42.  I had thought about doing some sort of MP practice during one of my long runs but I'm not sure.  I can't decide b/t doing the miles comfortably or pushing it into some sort of muddled mess which usually happens when I try something like that.  Ok I know I'm rambling now.

I have 3 more long runs - 20, 12 and 8 and 3 more track/speed workouts and finishing up w/ 2 short tempo run 8/4 days out.  All the above mixed in w/ short to medium easy runs.  And I hear ya Suzy - I really thought about doing that type of run but my gut tells me that it may not work for me.

Of course, all this great wisdom of mine is coming from running one marathon and a year's worth of Runner's World. LOL  A little knowledge is dangerous!

One other marathon note/question - Does anyone have any resources, advice, opinions, inspirations, etc.. about trying to drop 3-5 lbs. in the last weeks before the race?  I was thinking that after my last big run on Monday - I could try to shed a few in the 4 weeks prior to the race.

I obviously don't want to do muscle damage or starve myself (not possible anyways) but I've also read being lighter makes you go faster.  That was one of my training plan goals to lose 5 lbs.  I've dropped maybe 2 lbs. but another 3-5 lbs would be good.  And Halloween is not going to help me!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm going to go back to filling out my log to keep track.  But I need filling low-calorie food.

Hey hey, so do we have the racing list for the weekend yet?  who's it gonna be?

Here's what I've got - Saturday American Cancer Society 5k Walk - Making Strides Against Breast Cancer

Sunday AM I'm bailing on the sprint tri.  It's hosted by MSU Tri team (My department covers part of MSU so there is minimal travel for me), so I should do it, but the reg fee went up to $70 this week.  I cannot believe it.  It's a 400m Pool swim, 12mi bike, and 5k run around MSU campus... $70?  Uh No.  I should have registered for it last week when it was only $50.  So I'm disappointed for missing the opportunity and upset that the fee went up.

Sunday PM I am running a 10k in my town.  I took first in my AG last year, and I know I'm a lot faster this year so I should be defending my 'title'  ha.   Maybe I'll get an OA finish!

I'm about 2 weeks out from the Las Vegas Pumpkinman.  While this may sound odd, I've never swam an 800m OWS swim before.  I've trained, sure. But I have always stopped at the 500m distance.  I ain't skerrd, it's just going to be a new challenge.  I'm stoked!  Now the hills on the bike course... they scare me.

Tracy shacking up with the physical therapist....  When did the two of you get an apartment?  LOL

Seriously - I have a sleeveless wetsuit that is only reaches to my knees (I would have said "I have a shorty, but you people are brutal...."  Anyway - no binding in the shoulders and keeps the core warm - best part is that it was only like $90 bucks or so....  I will be wearing it this weekend - appears that my race is going to be chilly...
