I dint feel exerted at all and felt I could have ran forever. Does anybody have a better way to get my max heart rate and get more accurate intervals. My HRM said my max was 193. Thanks Hi Andre, great to have that first workout logged. Just curious, how did you determine your zone 2 max? Did you do an LT test to figure out your zones? |

There is a good article on how to do an LT test http://beginnertriathlete.com/cms/article-detail.asp?articleid=633 In a nutshell, you find a flat-ish course, warm up, run as hard as you can for 30 minutes, hit your lap button 10 minutes into the test and you will have your average heartrate for the final 20 minutes of the effort. This is your lactate threshold. Once you figure out your LT, you can plug it into the BT calculator to determine your zones. The test kind of sucks because it is all out. I think another good way to get an idea of your LT is to do an all out 10k race and your average HR should be pretty close to your LT. Sadly, I think I have to do this again soon, too! We can cheer each other on. Definitely warm up before you do this and try to make sure it is a nice secure course where you will not have to stop for any reason. Good luck! |

Speed will get increased every 30 seconds or 1:00 can't remember. When you can't go any more signal the person running the test, they print out your results and tell you your zones. |

Last year I had this fear that I looked like a fool in the pool because I had no formal training. So, when my training had that I was do swim for 45 min today, I was terrified! Long story short, I swam around 2000 yards this AM and felt great!! My only concern is that I am breathing out of only my right side. Will this be a huge issue? My first tri will be in Wilmington, which is an outdoor pool. I can breathe from both sides, but I feel it really impacts my endurance. Your thoughts are greatly appreciated! |

I still breathe on my right side most of the time. It will not make a huge difference (if any) for you. In fact for a pool swim where you do not need to sight it should not matter at all. Congrats on the swim! Oh BTW, FWIW people submit all kinds of crazy times for their estimated 100 yds. in pool swims. Edited by DougRob 2011-01-03 7:57 AM |

It is normal to have some jelly legs when you first start doing bricks, but no feeling in your feet is a little odd. Can you explain it a bit more? |

Extreme Veteran 368 Lamar | Subject: RE: swbkrun with us!!! - Closed Great job on overcoming your fear. Taking a plunge in new territory can be daunting. As for breathing I tend to mainly breath from my left side but have been working on bilateral on every 3 strokes but habits are hard to break. I would first get comfortable in the water and try working on form 1st. |

Congrats - fearing the swim is the biggest obstacle to overcome for most new triathletes. Personally, I had to work through several distance hurdles in the pool on my way to a straight mile. I guarantee that a few months from now when you rip off a great mile swim PR, you will look back and say "What was there to be worried about?" |

It is important to pace yourself off the bike. I find that even though my legs are a bit wobbly, I go out to fast coming off the bike and then pay for it the rest of the run... |

I get numb feet , mostly toes, during long rides also. I tried adjust a few things including placing my strap in various positions. But during my first three rides on my trainer I've been able to concentrate on foot placement, heel height. I noticed on my last ride (45 minutes) with my heel lower I did not experience my feet getting numb. |

I know I have been completely out of touch - with work, and then over the past couple months making up for family time with my family. I billed a crazy 3000 hours between Jan and mid-Nov last year, and was gone from home for about 4 1/2 months. When that crush ended in mid-Nov., I devoted the next month and a half to restoring the spousal and fatherly credit account that I had so sorely depleted. It has been useful and valuable time - building legos, playing trains and even playing with Hello Kitty toys. So, with that opening, can I plead to get back into the newly reconstituted MG? I am looking forward to the 2011 season and would love to be in the MG, if you will have me. (I promise that I will behave marginally more maturely than John and Trevor, but only marginally.) |

Otherwise just breathe to the side you are most comfortable with. |

You're right, that is a huge accomplishment. As a former water phobe, I know how much this progress can mean. Do you feel you have good balance and form in the water? My recommendation is to get that down first before you start messing with bilateral breathing. I am a right sided breather, but now that I have good form, I am slowly working on bilateral. Like many said, it isn't necessary, but every coach I have worked with suggested it would balance out my stroke in the long run. It's an '11 goal for me. I probably will rarely use it in OW, unless there are bad waves to contend with, but if it helps my overall form, I'm all for it!!! |

I got some shoe covers for Christmas and bought some wool socks a few days ago so it could have been worse I did numerous cold-weather bricks last spring. I remember several days I'd stop to get these huge pebbles out of my shoes... only to realize it was just my cold feet making it feel like I had rocks in there! After 15-20 minutes my feet would usually warm up. Shoe covers and wool socks help for sure. I still haven't found great covers for wet conditions, although I generally try to avoid cycling in the rain (but sometimes you just get stuck and so it goes...). Good job doing a brick in 30-degree temps!!! |
