It's easy. The adding the tax at the check out confused the cr@p out of me in the USA and Canada. ok - I live in a non-tipping nation. No I would not tip a medical professional person. However having lived in Greece, I would bribe them with copious amounts to get the best treatment. Back in the day when I could afford hair cuts or indeed had time for such frivolity...I used to tip the kid that washed my hair and cleaned up - I never tipped the owner of the salon.
Ah man, you would flip your lid here in WA state. We just legalized the sale of liquor in private retail outlets (the state gov. used to manage sales and distribution) and now when you buy it in the grocery store they have a price BUT there is the retail tax (which depends on where you live) AND a state liquor tax (which changes depending on the type of alcohol you buy.) Oh yeah, and they will start selling pot next year which I imagine will have a similar cost structure. Good thing I never buy liquor. |

We were in one town and the rates were different on one side of the street to the other, something about crossing a county boundary or something like that. In Australia we have a flat GST(VAT) rate of 10% on almost everything (except essential food and education) and the tax must be included in the marked price, so you know that when you get to the check out there is going to be anything added on. Some places in Australia have started the tipping jar thing but I think most Australians ignore them, especially in restaurants, it's so expensive to eat out here and service is always so bad that no-one deserves a tip. Plus our minimum wage is like double that of the USA so people don't rely on tips to actually survive.StaceyK - 2013-03-18 5:53 PM To make matters even more confusing, the tax is different depending upon the city you're in and every place now puts tipping jars on the counter, so even those services where one wouldn't historically/normally tip ask for tips. jobaxas - 2013-03-19 7:31 AM I like that about Australia, the price is the price, not tax added at the check out, no tipping to work out. In England and here in Australia - I tip in a restaurant if the service has been good. If it hasn't then I don't tip. |

Goods and services tax except if you bought six or more. Then a couple years ago, they were combined to become the HST (harmonized). Meaning some things that had only PST now had both PST and GST. But the people of British Columbia revolted and there was a referendum (last year) so we are going back to the PST and the GST on April 1st. Confused? Florida has a minimum sales tax of 6% which goes to the general state fund to provide state services; however, the law allows local governments to add local taxes on top of the 6%. Some areas only charge the 6%. I think the highest is 7.5. It is 6.5 in Orlando. So, even though its hard to keep up with the differences, I think I'll keep our confusing, yet cheaper system Now back to our normal manatee patter.amd723 - 2013-03-19 7:59 AM That's what I found so confusing every where I went the tax rates were different. Oh, I didn't mention percentages. HST: 12% Once we go back to GST/PST it is G5%, P7%. So if whatever you are buying is both taxes, it is still 12%. |

Anyway - cop was nice enough. Asked if I'd been drinking 'I said only chlorine', he said he didn't think that showed on a breath test but let's do one anyway. Then asked to see my phone, well that was at the bottom of my bag...I said 'mate I can't text without my glasses and full light'. He laughed.
