No claims. etc. That is a huge jump. My insurance rates rise every single year. No claims on house or car. When I emailed my agent about 18 months ago to ask, she pasted her generic answer "there are many reasons rates can change, including claim activity, discounts expiring, general cost increases." So I asked what was the specific reason MY rates changed and her answer was "it was a rate change affecting both your home and auto policy." Then 6 months later my auto rates increased AGAIN so I emailed her asking what was up and that my auto rate had increased 21% in the past 8 months (no claims, no tickets, nada) and if this would continue. Her response: I took a look at your policy. I understand how you feel. Unfortunately, just like milk prices are affected by drought, weather and disease there are certain factors that affect insurance premiums that are out of anyone's control. Increased occurrence of catastrophic weather has resulted in a rise in total claims paid out for damages, rise in home auto and medical costs for claims, and an increase in insurance fraud have all affected rates across the entire industry. When I get an email like this, I am always tempted to correct his or her grammar and send it back I took a looked at your policy. I understand how you feel. Unfortunately, just like as milk prices are affected by drought, weather and disease, there are certain factors that affect insurance premiums that are out of anyone beyond the insurance company's control. Increased occurrence frequency of catastrophic weather has resulted in a rise in total claims paid out for weather-related damages. A general rise in home, auto, and medical costs for claims, and an increase in insurance fraud have all also affected rates across the entire industry. I doubt your agent would appreciate my thoughtfulness.

Sensei Sin City | Subject: RE: TAN #203: TANese New Year - Horsing Around Originally posted by gr33n Insurance companies are the worst. I can't understand why there is not more public anger directed at them. I remember a few years ago my driving circumstances changed. I called up to adjust the estimated mileages and coverage (raised the deductible) and came away paying MORE. They told me the car is older and would be harder to service and find parts for. Lose lose. Short and curlies. Insert frustrative phrase here _______. Oh- and I don't even want to get started on the amount of time spent waiting on hold and going through voice recognition prompts only to be told I'll have to wait for the next available agent. Approximate waiting time 25 minutes. I just press "0" right off the bat. I'm talking to someone if it's important... |

I usually am not very talkative but the other guy and I had a lot in common so we chatted it up all night (very strange for me). Found out he works on Katana motorcycles and offered for me to bring mine over and we can tune it up to get it running like new (it's been in moth balls since last summer)... I described the problems and he seemed to already know the solutions. Which is cool, because that will save me 500 bucks in a mechanic doing it. I may also get it custom painted as a treat to me. Even if I don't ride it much more, at least it will be running perfectly to sell it. |

Oh I edit communications for a living so I do this in my head constantly! Not at all. One of the interesting things about language is that grammar is a skill that mainly resides in writer's own smug fastidiousness, not utility. It is rare that I cannot understand someone's meaning despite his or her not knowing or following the rules of grammar, spelling, or good style. Even in a particularly egregious example like this poor insurance agent''s explanation, I and everyone else got the message that the premium is what it is and we as insureds can do nothing about it. It just gives some satisfaction to win the grammar war if we lose the war on premiums.
TW PS. You have a comma splice, actually two of them. Your response should be written: Oh Gawd, reading what I type must completely horrify you. Not a big deal unless you happened to be in Miss Manning's English class in 9th grade.

Sweet I gave in to my midlife crisis after realizing driving down to get your bike was a cool but stupid idea. haha. I have had my bike lic since I was 16 years old and owned bikes up until about 7 years ago. My wife at the time despised bikes and hounded me until I sold mine so she could use the money to buy a hot tub. Because the bike was un safe. Long story short I still have the hot tub but thanks to this winter it is totally broken. Upside she moved out and I had all kinds of spare money and bought a 2012 Harley Davidson Street Bob. I looked for a while and didn't buy until the end of summer last year. Only managed to put about 250 miles on it and winter set in early. And from the damn snow drifts and closed roads around me today. I might never get to ride it. Someone stop winter before I go around with a hand gun shooting snowmen. |

Already have some parts on it but lauching a few more today. Man I want one of those cars in a bad way. I have owned so many of them. I regret selling my 88 mustang with all the work I had done to it. I regret my Mercury Capri more. Just because they were a tad different and not as many people had them. |

Maybe when we move to a place with no winter I'll see what I can do about getting one. I had a cruiser and then a crotch rocket. While the crotch rocket LOOKED cool, ugh, it was MISERABLE to ride in the Texas heat. The molding over the engine funneled ALL the engine heat directly onto my legs and body. It was awful. One day I think I started getting heat stroke from it (very light headed and dizzy- though I was going to pass out). Not to mention the crotch rocket was just uncomfortable. I drove motorcycles back in 1994-1998 (for 1.5-2 years it was my ONLY source of transportation), and I think it was safer back then (although still dangerous). There's no way I'd ride one in the city now. People can barely keep their cars in the lane. And I can't count the number of times I've seen people flat out run red lights or start going on their red light, thinking it is green. People aren't paying attention these days because they are on their phones. I decided that it's not worth risking my life to ride a motorcycle. |

I want to go some year. My BIL goes every year. His wife (my wife's sister) went with him this year too. It would be fun to go with them since neither my wife nor I actually rides motorcycles. However, it won't be anytime soon. We are sort of tied down. Their mother won't admit it but she needs some help these days. It is better that at least one daughter is around to check in frequently. I'll just google Bike Week pictures instead. Yeah that's a good idea.

I've only had sport-touring bikes so they've got a much more upright riding position - they may look like a crotch rocket because of all the fairing, you aren't nearly as aggressively over the handle bars. I've tried both cruiser bikes and total crotch rockets and neither of them worked at all for me... Sport touring is where it's at! |

Chatham Ontario | Subject: RE: TAN #203: TANese New Year - Horsing Around I don't mind sport touring. I bought a Harley for various reasons. I grew up with them in my family. I was actually the 3rd generation to buy a Harley from the shop I purchased from. I came home with a picture of my grandfather on his with my dad as a boy on the tank. They have had it hanging in their shop on the wall for 56-58 years. They were not quite sure. My grand father was one of the first motorcycle policemen in the area. I don't mind sport touring. To be hones I thought about a BMW for a while. And was very tempted to own an R6 again. But I want my bike to ride and get away on the country road. I am lucky enough my city is small like about 5 miles across by 5 miles across the other way. After that you are starting to get into a rural area already. well my run off isn't going so well. Why is it when you run off a new part with a customer here things break. Like a full on 200 ton hydraulic press line had the press rip itself out of the base supports. All hands on deck right now welding the machine back to the base. Kind of hard to stamp a part when one of your 6 presses in the line are down. Oh well I get to stop for lunch. PS it snowed like mad here yesterday and shut down all the highways. Did I mention I AM SICK OF THIS F*&KING WINTER. |

Went out with a couple on Sunday and really clicked. Very cool!! After wandering around the recent motorcycle show in Chicago, I still REALLY want to get the Ninja 1000 sport touring bike. Maybe when we move to a place with no winter I'll see what I can do about getting one. It is Bike Week in Daytona right now. My brother-in-law always goes. I understand it can be pretty wild. Could be fun. TW
My aunt lives in Daytona and LOVES the sounds of all the bikes rolling in every year.

Take their mother with ya, let her experience it, too
