The Zoot TT Ultra 4.0 was one of my favorite shoes period before I got hooked on Nike Free 4.0.  The sockless support in the Zoot tri shoes are nice, but the Frees have a nice inner that doesn't tear my feet up.

Once you get past T2, there really is no difference between a "tri shoe" and a running one.  Running is running at that point.

Yeah. The things I was thinking about was the ability to go sockless and maybe a pull on the back of the heel. Laces are tertiary I suppose as it's easily added to any shoe.

My first racing flat was a T7, the  Wellington version with the pull on the heel (and the Union Jack heh )

I have these now  which are just the road version. I use them for everything HM and over.

As far as the ability to go sockless. I have yet to find a shoe that I can't run sockless in. However, drain holes are something I haven't noticed too much.

I was more just curious.

Both of those look solid.  I add speed laces to whatever shoe I race in, so that I don't have to worry about "Did I tie too tight?  Do it again...".  That and keeping them tied.

I don't know if you've had a shoe come untied during a 5k, but it sucks

Not sure if I replied at any point in my Manatee history to this...my birthday is July 22.

Mine's April 13.  Somebody better get busy on baking some cakes.  I certainly won't - I stay out of the kitchen as much as possible!!  (DH rocks on that front.  He grocery shops, makes the meals, and cleans up afterwards.  I'm so spoiled!)

Mine's April 2. And I think I'm going to buy those HEDs with the powertap as an early b-day present.

Happy birthday to you...

Another thing to check - What speed cassette are you using? Check what free wheel is on the powertap and whether its campy or shimano. I've recently changed from 10 to 11 speed and needed to go and get a new freewheel for the powertap. Cost about 120 USD.

Also check to see if the braking surface is aluminium or carbon and what life is left in it. Then factor in the price of new carbon specific brake pas if they do have carbon brake surface.

I've had every kind of dysfunction equipment can have in a running race lol. I once had the insole come out of my already VERY minimally cushioned shoe (it weighs about 3 oz WITH the insole)

Speed laces are just uncomfortable for me. I've got weird shaped, high arched feet, such that I have a random bone on the top of my foot and anything tightened down on it hurts (yes, snowboard bindings are a beeeeeooo.) So I just tie a sh*t ton of knots lol

Very good points, thanks! It's shimano 10 spd, which is what I need. and these have alloy braking surface, so don't have to worry about that.

I use them because the style I have (ultra kalani) are really comfortable.  I don't think they are really too tri specific as they have regular laces and no drain holes (i think!).  I do have another pair that is much more specific - boa lacing system and drain holes.  I wore them for my one and only tri last year and would have worn them for others up to oly distance.  They are comfy too, but not like the other pair, so i would not wear them for a HIM.

Yes, yes, and yes.

I like a tri designed shoe especially for warmer weather races.  For my first warm weather HIM (Hawaii 70.3) I wore my ASCIS DS trainers and with all the fluids running into my shoes they got very, very sloshy.  So drainage is important.  Most tri shoes have some type of drainage holes in the soles.

The seamless interiors are more comfortable for running sockless (as a general rule).  I normally wear socks when I road run race but for tri's I prefer to go sockless.  Saves a few seconds in transition and is one less thing to think about.

Lastly, I like elastic laces and a some type of heel strap to make them easier to slip on.  Not a huge deal as you can put speed laces in any shoe but t

he heel strap is nice.

I had great luck with Pearl Izumi iso transitions but wore them out.  Just bought a pair of Zoots but have only used them once.  I think I prefer the PI's but I'll stick with the Zoots for now.

I am currently in Tri-Noosa's and my Pearl Izumi's (now retired, a moment of silence please) are no more. I'm simply more likely to try different shoes on my constant search for perfection. Triathlon running is running, in my book. But we've already covered the fact that I am sweaty by nature, so any shoe I run in needs to drain.  The water is more of an issue with the bike shoes as I come out of T1 onto the bike. The other pieces like heel pulls and laces are things I do look for, but I can do without either. I'm more about the fit. And the coolness factor matters too!

The shoes in the picture I posted were the K swiss Kruuz, which I bought after watching Rinny run in Kona the first time.  Her run was and still is poetry in motion.  The problem with that shoe is that the laces were crap and came untied all the time.  Speed laces from now on for me after that experience.

I followed her coach on IG just so I could see videos of Rinny running. Yup, stalker here...

Ref shoe laces coming undone. A trick we used in the Army was to apply boot/shoe polish to your laces, then wipe of the polish with a cloth. They should feel "squeaky" but don't stain your hands when you tie them. You should have no problems with laces becoming undone again.

I believe time would be best spent running uphill.

Down here during prime time tri season (or running in general) it gets so hot (80-90+ with near 100% humidity before noon) that I usually take a water from every aid station to pour on me to help cool me down for even just a little bit.

Your shoes can collect a good bit of water in the process of this.

I do that too but it's so dry here, the water rarely even soaks through my shoes.  It's probably a little more effective at cooling here than there.

Then it's not really a tri issue at all I guess.
