I have my olympic saturday. This is taper time and I have been sleeping like crap! I am not nervous, I just wake up over and over again. The only thing really on my mind about the tri is the effectiveness of the 12 week plan I have just about finished. But since there were lots of miles in all three areas I really am not too worried. So, has anyone else experienced  poor sleep this much before a race? For no reason? AS part of the taper process (due to the reduced and regular exercise)?

Doug

Everytime I do major taper....especially for Boston and the HIM.  I think your body is used to working hard and suddenly it isn't.  I was also VERY cranky.

Doug and Andy. Good luck on your races this weekend.

Wetsuits: I wear a full suit all the time. Since I got my new xterra and haven't had any issues with the shoulders being tight at all. I just make sure they are really pulled up high with as much extra at the shoulders as I can get. Very comfortable even if i speak in a slightly higher octave while wearing it.

Glad to hear good news about your leg Tracy.

Trevor are you sure it was the tire burning that you could smell and not just gas from something you ate?

I agree with Suzy on the taper. I felt crappy after training so hard and then doing hardly anything. I was very anxious to get back out there and do something else. Evne my wife noticed I was more annoying than usual.

Here 's something Stev and Roni might get a kick out of. I was readin gin the 2009 official Iroonman and 70.3 qualifiers guide a description of the weather in Boise for the race in June.

"You're unlikely to experience anything too extreme this time of year. Expect cool morning temps in the mid 60's with the Mercury rising to the low 80's in the afternoon. Boise has realtively "dry" air and only recieves about an inch of rain each month, so the chance of a downpour on race day is ulnlikey."

I guess they forgot to mention htat he 1 inch of rain a month come all on one day and is usally enough for the whole summer. `

Doug--- Plan and simple--- TAPER SUCKS!  You always feel like rubbish, sleep like rubbish, etc... Just be sure to get some good rest 2 days out from your race.  Then night before you always toss and turn, plus are up pretty early!  Don't second guess anything.  You are FULLY prepped for this baby!

I hit that moment at about 9:15 am Sept 29.

My wife would say I hit it around May 24, 1999 - a week before my son was born and the day I quit my real job.

BigReub - 2009-10-08 8:55 AM Trevor, have you ridden outside since getting the cadence/speed sensor installed?  It will calibrate itself if you are outside and the Garmin has a satelite signal.  It will be correct then.  I know mine feels very accurate when on the trainer.

Good thing try but he shouldn't have to.  edit.  but then again he really should if it says 30 mph. ;-)

How was the trip?

Good advice. I just hooked it up the other day, so it hasnt been outside. never thought of that. I'll give it a shot tonight. Johno - 30mph is just me getting warmed up. Just wait to see me in action.

In a non wetsuit race, could one wear "tri shorts"  made of neoprene...for the bouyancy benefit?  What exactly is the definition of a wetsuit?  Or does the rule say not bouyancy assistance?  I think Desoto advertises their short with a "float pad"  meaning it floats=bouyancy.

Was just thinking that for a HIM or IM that was not wetsuit legal, a short size neo suit over your swimsuit would be awesome.

48 shots later I am back from the Sports Med Doc.  As it turns out, I do not have an ITB issue, but a hamstring/glute med issue instead.  Too much downhill running in preparation for the HIM did me in, especially given the weakness of those muscles.  What does it all mean?  No speedwork until it settles down. Phooey.  We were starting that this weekend. And more strengthening exercises. Double phooey.

I'd say just suck it up.  The way you are improving with your swimming, you will be giving Michael Phelps a run soon.

Jeepguy2358 - 2009-10-07 7:51 PM Good luck in your Olympics Doug and Andy!  Rock'em out!

Tracy - Great news from your PT.  I'm really happy for you.  Maybe next year, you, Doug, and I can do B2B together (a BT MG Relay).  I have family in Wilmington and only live 5 hours away.  I'd be up for any leg.

Are you referring to me or Tracy's husband Doug? (Doug A, from now on). I might be up for it, but I don't want to be the runner. My chcice is bike first, swim second.

Sorry, I guess I should have clarified that.  I meant you (MG) Doug.  I would be up for anything.  It would be fun.  If I was only doing one leg, I could bust out the swim, hammer the bike, but no matter what, I would suck at the run, but would do it!  I'm in if you guys are interested next year.

Also, Doug, what kind of hockey league do you play in up there?  I quit playing in January to eliminate the risk of injury and not be able to do my HIM.  I had been playing for the past ten years in a league down here with some pretty good competition.  One of my teams has a bunch of guys played at the college or junior level with about five playing as high as the ECHL.  Each year, my buddies and I would get together a team to play against some guys from Atlanta at Phillips Arena right after one of the Thrasher's games.
