I have a chocolate lab and we will do short runs together at times. 3-5 mi. Problem is he goes out  in a flash and then usually is getting dragged back home.

Same with our Golden. He is off leash, but I run on a trail where I never meet anyone.

Our 2 golden-y dogs love runs of up to about 45 min. at a nice easy pace but we've gotta keep them out of the hot weather...they're super happy about this fall weather!  They get really excited if we're putting on the running shoes, and I'm pretty sure they're devastated if it's a specific workout that makes us not able to take them along.

I tried to run with my dog, but he is no good for longer distances. He is a Keeshound and is good for about 2 miles on a leash, 3-3.5 miles off the leash and at 4 miles nearly needs to be carried home. One time he joined me on a longer run and now when I ask if he wants to go for a run he does, he runs under my wife's chair at her computer desk and hides, shaking. He is afraid of the water too, well he did actually swim volluntarily for 10 seconds this summer for the first time in 3 years, but he is not um brave. My kids won't run with me. I even offer to let them ride their bike while I run. Although one day last year my son decided that he had run 2 miles in cross country that he could come do a 13.5 mile trail run with me. He could do it there was no doubt in his mind why was I doubting his fitness..... he turned around at mile 2 and walked back. He is 13 and I bet I don't have an infanite number of those days left. He would become a marathoner just to spite me... if it didn't require work.

I have a 16 month old lab/greyhound mix. You can just imagine what this dog thinks about running. She's been running with me about 5 months now, longest she's done is about 5 miles. We normally do 3.5 miles 3x week. Except on vacation when we would run on the Lake Michigan beach, I keep her on a leash while we run. She's good and maintains my pace w/o pulling much. The dog's even done a couple organized 5k races with me (you see a lot of people with dogs at races in Chicago) and hasnt got in anyone else's way either.

She goes nuts when I get my running shoes from the closet. Of course my 10 minute miles are barely a trot for the dog. We get back home from a run and I am ready for water and a shower, the dog goes right for a frisbee in the yard. She could easily do another 10 miles!!!

She swims too. Not just fetching stuff, but swims. Over vacation she would swim by me in the lake. I was only about 20 yards offshore, dog would swim along and every few minutes would go back to shore or shallows and run along, then back out to the deeper water by me. We did about four 1 mile swims this way during vacation. Amazing.

This morning's run was a little depressing though. I felt tired, was really huffing a bit. I look down at dog, and she's trotting along, not even panting hard. Then, out of nowhere, while I am thinking "dog, I'm killing myself here and youre not even working hard" she looks up toward me and YAWNS in the middle of our run. Gotta love it.

benc84 - 2008-10-12 6:47 PM I dont think he could keep up, plus its not a good idea to run with a german Shepherd I want a HUSKY they are the best running dogs ive heard.
I actually run with a german shepherd - husky mix. She's almost 12 years old and loves it. I always keep her on a leash and for the first mile I feel like I'm dragging her because she wants to stop and sniff something every 5 seconds. http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/profile/images/47206-p... That's her in Flagstaff, AZ. Her first time in snow, she loved it!

WOW your dog is beautiful!

When I was in high school, we had a dog that was half golden retriever and half irish setter.  She used to run with me out in the country.  The longest run I went 10 miles and she probably went about 15.  The biggest challenge was she used to lay in the tepid water of drainage ditches to cool down and got somewhat "fragrant."

Our Australian cattle dog, Rosie, wrapped the leash around my legs. sending me crashing to the pavement, and then to the emergency room for stitches in my chin. Thas was a few years ago, and I haven't run with her since.

I have a 112 lb., 4.5 year old Great Dane (Bela) and a 65 lb., 5 year old Yellow Lab mix (Boris).  I walk them both at the same time.  We go for one mile each day.  The Dane is worn out for the rest of the day, whereas the Lab, though he's good about laying about, could use some more exercise.  Don't be fooled by the Dane's size:  they are the biggest couch potatoes!

So, I'm going to start taking Boris on my runs.  My longest distance right now is 4 miles, so I'm only going to take him on my shorter runs right now to build him up.  Very important, indeed.

I run with my standard poodle Bam Bam.

A neat story about him: I traveled 400 miles to buy him about 4 years ago. When it was time to find a groomer for him I called the woman I got him from to ask what to look for in a good groomer. She told me that a woman that lived near me had bought Bam Bam's sister and found a good one and I could contact her. When I did we got to talking about our Poodle's. She told me she had bought a white female and when she told me what she named her I dang near dropped the phone. Bam Bam's sister was named Pebble's!

True story I promise.

My dog Soaphie, a border - berner mix, is my reason for running.....she was diagnosed with diabetes right after IMLP this year - before that she'd go up to 13 miles with me. Now she does shorter runs - up to an hour.

I have a husky. She can run far--I've taken her on 18 milers but she gets bored and I feel like I am dragging her. She does best on 6-10 mile runs.  She also does not like to run when it is hot. 40-60 degrees is perfect for her. She does about 20-40 mpw.

After my wife and I moved in together we were able to bring her old puppy (she is 8) from her parents house to come live with us (hard to have a dog at college before that). She is a flat coat retriever mix (who knows with what) but was a bit overweight when we got her. This was two years ago and we started her off with frequent short walks, slowly getting longer. then we added in some hikes for her (which she loves) and finally as the summer weather is cooling off this year I have started taking her on my runs 2-3 times a week. She can't go more than about 20 minutes at a time right now of a steady 8 min/mile pace but after that I just drop her off at home and go for longer if it is a longer day for me. She recovers semi fast from it all and is usually ready to go out back and chase her tennis ball when I am finally done with my run/stretching. She has also lost about 12 pounds in the last 2 years (and is now down to a healthy 74).

My wife and I run with our two dogs, both lab mixes on a very regular basis. The furthest we have taken them is about 6-7 miles.

This is Donut she has one blue eye, one brown eye and a head full of marbles but she can run for-ever.

And Caboose. She is a sweetheart and gets completely exhausted trying to keep up with Donut.

Post a pic! I love berners, and everyone thinks my little aussie is a berner in disguise
