8763 Boulder, Colorado | Subject: RE: What is your average strokes per 25 m? Possum, Thanks. It's not about drumming up business for me. It's just about being able to help people. When I started in triathlon, I was slower than 90% of the people on this board. I swam 27:00 for a 1/2 mile, and I ran 9:30 a mile off the bike. For a 20 year old, who was involved with athletics his whole life, that is pretty slow. Lucky for me, I got some good advice, and even had a mentor who helped me a TON! Without that help, I'd probably be a couch potato today. THIS is the reason I like to help. It's simple really. I am just out to help people avoid the mistakes I have made, and get more value (fun) out of their investment in triathlon. That's it. Now, get working on those flip turns :-) Mike |

8763 Boulder, Colorado | Subject: RE: What is your average strokes per 25 m? Well thanks! My compensation is hearing all these great stories of people improving all the time. You know, I can never do my first triathlon again. Or my first Olympic, or Half or Full IM. So, hearing people tell thier tales is the next best thing. That is what I truly enjoy! Have a great day. :-) |

Champion 6627 Rochester Hills, Michigan | Subject: RE: What is your average strokes per 25 m? 25m - 15-17 if I'm cruising (1:40/100m), and 16-18 if I'm pushing it (sub 1:30/100m). Also, like Karl, I use no kick to speak of - one drumbeat kick per stroke to balanace - but that's it. I can certainly feel the tradeoff between gliding and turnover. With increased turnover it's much faster, but can't be sustained forever. Weight training would most likely yield the biggest improvement. I also struggled with the VO2 gain vs. swim distance loss associated with flip turns. In the end, I elected to do the flip turns, but NOT maximize underwater distance off the wall via a dolphin kick - I grab a breath as close to normal cadence as possible. This is a middle-of-the-road kinda compromise - I'm not aggressively pushing VO2 max levels, but just by doing the flip turns period you get some benefit in this area. It keeps the risk of going anaerobic to a minumum, and most closely approximates a tri. We'll leave the hard VO2 work to over/unders or similar. |

Elite 4344 | Subject: RE: What is your average strokes per 25 m? 17-19 per 25 yds on a one hour straight swim. But I can easily increase that number. Occasionally, I swim with guy who is even older than I (there are a few). I am a bit faster than he is swimming but he has a really smooth quick flip turn while I do wall turns. So I pant, pant, pant to catch him each lap only to see his feet when I am coming off the wall. I can do flips but I will have to slow something else down because it really makes me feel hypoxic even breathing every stroke. TW

Veteran 237 | Subject: RE: What is your average strokes per 25 m? 16-18 per 25 yards. Down from 26-28 earlier this past winter. My next goal is to get it down to 14-16 over the winter (classes & another stroke analysis). I'm a short guy by most standards (5'9") but definately think eventually 12-14 is possible if I stay focused on the form |

Regular 138 | Subject: RE: What is your average strokes per 25 m? I was told you shouldn't be counting strokes but adding stroke count and time together. When should you stop worrying about technique and work on endurance, muscle strength, etc. My 50m time range from (30 strokes at 1:00) to (40 strokes at 0:45) depending how much effort I put in. The problem is that I can’t hold the fast pace for more than a few laps. Should I be working on the technique or do I need to get fitter/stronger? |

Extreme Veteran 495 Stamford, CT | Subject: RE: What is your average strokes per 25 m? sounds like you are working on technique on 1:00, but sprinting on :45. Why not try holding 50s on :50 but doing about 34-5 strokes -this should be at a pace that you think you could continue for 400-800 yards/meters. |

Pro 4578 Vancouver, BC | Subject: RE: What is your average strokes per 25 m? Well I got back in the pool. When I first got in, I swam 25m at 22 SPL. Then next 25m was at a slightly higher SPL. I tried breaking my stroke down and working on anchor drill, but I don't know if I got it. I think all I am doing is watching my catch right? I also did fist drill and a drill where I take a 6 beat kick on one side (in a streamlined position) then roll to the other side and repeat. Oh and I also just did some slow motion drills and work with a pull bouy. I am pretty sure that my elbow isn't dropping, but my stroke my have changed these past couple of months as I think I am now more inefficent. The good news though is that I was down to 1:49/100m so I am happier with the time. I think I can get one more day in the pool (Saturday) before my tri. Is there a website where I can see a photo or a detailed explanation of the anchor drill. I am really dense when it comes to picturing these things in my head and I need to actually see it and practice it on dry land first before I am able to do it in the water. Thanks, Jen |

Pro 4578 Vancouver, BC | Subject: RE: What is your average strokes per 25 m? Just to be clear I was able to have 22 SPL on my first lap, but after drilling, I was at 26 SPL. Maybe I just need to relax more and not concentrate so much. Jen |

8763 Boulder, Colorado | Subject: RE: What is your average strokes per 25 m? I only have a DVD of the drill, no website pics, sorry. Try to keep the hand, wrist, and forearm as one, do NOT break the wrist, keep the elbow high, and CATCH! Once you get it, you will go Ahaa! If you are catching, you will know it instantly. It will feel like you have the caught the edge of the desk and you are pulling yourself by it. Unless you see yourself swim, you won't ever know if you drop your elbow or not.. |

Veteran 237 | Subject: RE: What is your average strokes per 25 m? My stroke count has been rather consistent around the 16-18. My time has dropped to around 1:30 per 100 and 3:05 per 200. But I see your point in terms of the stroke count and trying to avoid "over-extending" your stroke. In the end, it's something I'm addressing during the off-season in terms of working on my limiters! mikericci - 2005-09-14 2:46 PM Jerry Try not to get too carried away with stroke count unless you are getting faster every time you reduce the strokes. Pro 4578 Vancouver, BC | Subject: RE: What is your average strokes per 25 m? Mike thanks for your help with this last week. I got in the pool a couple of times before my tri and I worked on the drill that you mentioned. On the tri I was able to go 1:47/100m for 600m and today during swim club practice, I was back down to 1:43/100m. Thanks, Jen |

56 | Subject: RE: What is your average strokes per 25 m? I don't know why I can't sustain anything less than 28 strokes (counting both arms). My speed is about 2 minutes per 100 m. Last year I was trying to improve my technique, and brought my absolute minimum count from around 22 to 18, without excessive kicking (if I added some excessive glide and kick, the number became 16), however I couldn't sustain more than 50 m doing this as the muscles fatigued so much with excessive stretching for a long stroke, and my sustainable spl had never decreased from 28. No matter I started from 18, 22 or even 26, the end result after swimming 400 m would always be 28, and if I started off 24 instead of 18, I actually got less fatigue. I joined a squad afterwards and the coach told me to stop doing stroke count work. I then gave up completely. |

Master 8249 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: What is your average strokes per 25 m? 14-year old zombie thread, so you probably won't hear back from these people! I have stopped worrying about stroke count, too. Mine is 22-24 for 25m. I'm about 5'7" (173 cm); it's not great for my size, but I do have a high stroke rate that works well in open water. 1:10 IM swim, maybe closer to 1:08 and change since supposedly that course was about 100m longer. I will never win a 50m pool sprint, but my swim gets me where I'm going. I think there's a difference between the most effective stroke in calm pool conditions and rougher open water, particularly ocean--the basics are the same, but that gliding stroke that works for some pool swimmers can be a disadvantage in open water if the pull isn't fast or strong enough, because they'll get pushed or pulled off course by the current during the glide phase. I know in ocean swims, I pass a lot of people who are #1 Much bigger than me and # Swimming with a much slower stroke rate. I always place better relative to the field the tougher the conditions. My guess is it has to do with stroke rate and style. |

56 | Subject: RE: What is your average strokes per 25 m? I am at the same height with you and I also want to bring my number down to yours as well. Our stroke rate is probably similar as I swim 3.7 km OW race in 86 minutes, and I need about 28 - 29 strokes per 25 m pool. However, my coach tells me to stop worrying stroke length, and wants me to even stroke faster instead! |
