2 | Subject: RE: WELCOME to the SE Asia BT forum! Introduce yourself! Hello everyone, My name is Rich and I am in Korea for a year. I am a beginner triathlete and have participated in my first two events: an aquathlon in Seoul (in May): Triathlon in Daegu (June 15). The Aquathlon was a 1500 meter swim and a 10K run. I failed to finish the swim because I swam too slow and was not allowed to go for my second 750 M lap (thankfully). I did the run and gathered some good experience. The open water swim was tough especially with the grabbing and kicking. I panicked some and swallowed a lot of water. I drank so much that I didn't need any water for the run. I swam in one spot for about 1/2 hour because the river current. Of course I was unaware until I spotted something on the shore and realized I wasn't moving. I spent over an hour in the water. The Olympic distance Triathlon in Daegu was great because I finished. The swim was in a pond (swallowed less water) and was much calmer even though there were more participants. Apparently drafting is allowed in Triathlons in Korea so I joined in and had a nice time biking except I forgot to bring water. The run was tough for me especially because I am a clyde and I was really thirsty but it is hard to drink when you are running. I slogged through the run and finished the tri in just over 3 hours (have to boast a little). The event was a well run event and very organized. The events in Korea seem to be very well run. I am looking forward to my next event but It may be difficult as I am leaving this summer. I have caught the bug and hope to participate in many more. |

Master 1702 Southern Ontario | Subject: RE: WELCOME to the SE Asia BT forum! Introduce yourself! Hi All!!! I'm 23 days away from arriving in Qingdao for the summer!! Looking forward to exploring a new country and any tips or tricks about training in China would be greatly appreciated!!! We have a pool on campus at the school I'll be working at for the summer - but we're still not sure if we'll be able to use it or not. (Communication about specifics isn't exactly clear.) I was wondering about renting a bike - but I'm also wondering if it will be more dangerous than it's worth. Nice to meet all of you!! |

Regular 60 Bangalore, Karnataka | Subject: RE: WELCOME to the SE Asia BT forum! Introduce yourself! Hi All ! Here's my effort to expanding the geographical reach of this forum :-) I am from India and was keenly into the sport in my years in the US - started with sprints and graduated to Oly distance races.. but that was 4 years ago.. came back to India and lost all contact with tris.. continued cycling passionately and still get some cycling in daily. Now I have heard of the Colombo Half-Ironman event in Feb2012 and that's really a short trip away and am planning to sign up and start training in earnest. I came back to BT after years and was delighted to see a form for SE Asia - considering there is nothing for Asia and being emboldened by the last post from China, I decided to pitch in as well.. It would be good to learn from you all and share info on events in these parts as well. cheers, Avinash |

Melon Presser 52116 | Subject: RE: WELCOME to the SE Asia BT forum! Introduce yourself! Hi, Rich! Congrats on your races! Swimming against a current can be really draining and kinda demoralizing, well done. I've heard that races in Korea are very good ... I would love to do the Seoul Marathon! Hi, Stef! I had no idea you were going to Qingdao. You must be there already--how's it going? Coulda sworn some of the Bali Tri people had come from QD. Most places in China seem cycling friendly ... what have you discovered? Hi, Avinash! Thanks for chiming in! There's a few Indians here on BT ... maybe I should hunt them down and corral them here. |

Melon Presser 52116 | Subject: RE: WELCOME to the SE Asia BT forum! Introduce yourself! Well, with summer in full swing and triathlon exploding as a sport in Asia, it is definitely time for me to get this forum hopping and happening again! I also want to put together a decent race calendar. TRImapper.com comes close, but I'd also like to include other multisport and endurance events. |

I'm really looking forward to coming back - Singapore has always felt like a second home to me. I just have to brush up on my Puah Chu Kang language skills I just checked out the Phuket Laguna Tri web site and it looks like the race is all sold out. Bummer. Any other good races in the SEA region coming up? Does the Singapore 70.3 sell out fast? Cheers, |

Singapore 70.3 does fill up fast, so if you plan to race, you should sign up sooner rather than later. Phuket fills up even faster, especially since they're doing the 70.3 Asia-Pac championships there now. Most people do the extended Oly the weekend prior as a prep for the 70.3. If you want to participate for 2012, you should keep a close watch on when the registration opens as it sells out within a day or two.. Enjoy your time in SG. I miss it already!! |

Veteran 119 | Subject: RE: WELCOME to the SE Asia BT forum! Introduce yourself! Hi all!! I relocated to Shanghai from Georgia a few months ago and am getting back into training now ... definitely way out of shape. Seems like there is a growing group forming here in Asia, which is exciting. I think the remainder of this year will be building the base back and then hitting some events next year. What are the best ones in the region? My sherpa team is headed by my wife with a 16 month old now and another coming in Dec., so looking for very spectator and family activity friendly.

Master 8248 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: WELCOME to the SE Asia BT forum! Introduce yourself! Welcome! Now living in Vietnam, but lived in Beijing for a decade as a distance runner (pre-tri days) so know about the trials and tribulations of training in China! I'm not familiar with the tri scene (or lack thereof) in China (there was an active running scene even when I was there in the 90's so guessing there still is), but Southeast Asia has some great events. I haven't done that many but for family-friendly I'd recommend resort-based races like Bintan Tri in Indonesia (short ferry ride from Singapore), and Vietnam Tri here on my home turf (Vietnam). Laguna Phuket in Thailand and Bali Tri are also popular, but haven't personally done them. You do need to be ready to deal with the heat racing in this area--Shanghai summers should be good prep! |

City2surf and sydney half marathons. Rode to work, started to swim. Came to the philippines, swam, biked and ran. Did NAGT in Cebu. Signed up for MetaMan I will be doing NAGT in Cebu, a long distance tri, then another NAGT in Cagian de ORO. That should get me there. Did I mention, I am the worlds worst swimmer? Keep TRI ing |

Master 8248 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: WELCOME to the SE Asia BT forum! Introduce yourself! Hi Shorty, I am thinking of doing Metaman too (the half, or small possibility to do the full as a relay with a buddy or two--me as the runner, or the swimmer and runner). Going to see how training for my first HIM in June goes, first. The Oly at Bintan is hot and hilly--I imagine Metaman will be more (well, much more LOL) of the same. Are you planning on the full or the half? Welcome to the SE Asia forum! Karen |

Master 8248 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: WELCOME to the SE Asia BT forum! Introduce yourself! Hi Pete, Just saw this on the other thread. Welcome! How long have you been at it? What part of Saigon are you based in? Where have you been training? (And, embarrassingly, have we met in real life? I'm awful with names.) I live and work in District 7 (Phu My Hung) and do most of my swimming at my workplace (int. school); running in the neighborhood and, lately, on the treadmill, and biking at the Tan Tuan (sp.?) industrial park or on the trainer, since my bike buddy moved to Saudi in March. Before that we did some road loops but I'm afraid to hit the roads solo with the crazy traffic and my mechanical idiocy. There are a few other triathletes around here and some informal groups that meet for rides in Districts 2 and 7, but no clubs, etc. Do you know about Saigon Cycles and the Googlegroups for it? Good way to meet people to ride with. (Unfortunately at present the roadie types are all too fast for me.) Currently out of bike action due to a badly sprained elbow and nerve inflammation (tripping while running, believe it or not, not a bike crash). Using the brakes is painful as is riding in anything but aero--that's a pretty hazardous combo even in the best of traffic! But hope to be back out there soon, drafting the motorbikes and terrorizing the industrial park. Karen (if you see me in said park, I'm the skinny, dark-haired woman riding a white Trek with aerobars and endangered animal stickers) Edited by Hot Runner 2012-09-29 8:24 AM |
