Yeah I've heard that but I don't buy it.  I think the etymology is much older...like middle English.  Maybe it's from Beowulf...

Well, then you only can't figure it out because you're making it too hard!

This says it's from the French attaindre "to touch upon, seize." They're talking about the verb form, but maybe someone somewhere (maybe in France) said "please, touch upon me there."

I can't sit still while talking on the phone..

Me too! And I can't not move my hands while talking either.

I can't stop thinking about someone who doesn't think about me..

*sigh* Me too.

I can't stop feeling myself up now that I've been training for a while.

Hah! I used to check my hair all the time when walking anywhere (window reflections, etc.). Now, I look down at my thighs while walking, marvelling at muscles I haven't seen in 25 years. I touch them all the time. I'm in disbelief that they are there.

Heh, I just did it at my desk - ran my hand over my thigh. I'm a studette! Not as studly as I'm going to be, but I am on my way.

I can't not count stairs as I'm walking up or down them.

I can't eat plain, ol' eggs - scrambled, fried, hardboiled, anything.

I can't give birth.

I can't seem to attract my target demographic:  female, single, 25(ish)-35(ish), childless, relatively athletic

I can't wear contacts, though I really, really tried.

I can't graduate at the end of this semester.

I can't drink alcohol.

I can't do alot of other things too, but they are too numerous to list.

Steve

I can't find my way out of a paper bag. I'm seriously directionally impaired. I can't tell North, south, east, west, left or right. If I'm going somewhere new I have to map it out carefully. I have routes to get me around the city, and I cannot deviate from them.

And even though I write for a living, I can't type for sh*t.

Ohh... you have no idea what you are in for. Welcome to BT and mea culpa!

Nice nickname, stupidnickname.

Yeah, I'm starting to get the feeling that BT is a different kind of place than the BB's I've been on before. I've only been a regular on techno-geek places like Slashdot before. I'm stupidnickname on that site, too. Major difference? BT actually has women. And women who can kick my ass, too!

I think this thread is a less depressing version of http://postsecret.blogspot.com/

And Renee: I'm sorry I didn't get to know you sooner; I'm moving from Tampa to Ohio next week.

I am also north-south-east-west impaired!  It doesn't help that I live in Atlanta which is circled by a major roadway 285 where north-south-east-west changes periodically.  I always give directions by city name i.e. go toward/away from Decatur etc.   Years ago when I travelled alot for work, I found this to be the case in LA.  The directional signs listed city names not n/s/e/w.  Kind of difficult when you don't know where anything is!

I CAN'T do math, neither can my husband.  It is a secret from our children, we are hoping they missed this non-math gene.

I can't not have a dirty car, or anything for that matter (yes to OCD)

  • I can't navigate my way out of a paper bag.  I can't follow a map without turning it around in the direction I'm heading, and even then, it's sketchy.
  • I can't play guitar, despite months and months of lessons and trying. It just never sounded like music.
  • I can't sing. (Sounds even less like music)
  • I can't do anything mathematical... or having to do with simple physics.

***SIGH***

But, I can ride my bike with the boys, so that's got to count for something. Ha! There!

You MUST come to the Reebok Women's Triathlon on Sunday in St. Pete. It's a women's triathlon, just for women, no guys allowed to compete cuz it's for women only. Say hello to me, Jessica (Tri Take Me Away) and Lucy (Christine). We'll be the 3 women gabbing together pre-race.

I can't go to sleep with the television on. This can be a problem because Barry can't go to sleep without the television on.

I can't - absolutely cannot - buy anything in a grocery store if it's not in a multiple of two. I know that there must be some exception, but I can't think of it right now. I just always buy two or four or six of everything - it's never an odd number, certainly never just one, because if you need one, you're going to need another one when the first one runs out, right?
