based on the bike course elevation for that last hill, the total elevation change is approx 150ft.  But its really steep

It's actually steeper than that last hill of the bike, because you start lower but end up at the same elevation.

in the 3 loop configuration, is most of the course off road?

With the BT route tracker I get, the run section parallel with 973 as .4 miles long with 92 feet of climbing which would be approximately 4.3% grade.

Does this sound correct.

I'll chime in again... you already know I'm a fan of keeping the hill.  (I ran up once last year, walked up part of the 2nd.  3rd time??.... Now you're just getting mean.)

But I'll disagree with others on the three-loop course.  I'd like to see it stay with two loops.  I liked the undulating hills outside the park and at the expo center.  Still a good challenge, just different than quadzilla.  I didn't mind that there weren't many spectators out on that portion.  The aid stations/support were still great.  But it was a section where you had to pull into yourself to keep going.  A nice reminder that our sport is about a lot of individual effort and inner struggle.  (Some might say it was nice to have a section where they could suffer without being in the spotlight of the spectators.)

Plus, it made the excitement/cheering/fun inside the park that much better.  If the whole course is a rowdy, cheering, etc. you can get desensitized to it and you end up trying to tune it out rather than take it all in.  Three loops gets repetitive.  I've done a HIM with three-loops on the bike, and it was OK.  But it doesn't sound as much fun for the run.

Just my thoughts....

I agree with David and after getting back from IMAZ (3 loop bike and 3 loop run) I DO NOT LIKE 3 loops of running or biking.

What about an out and back across the damn to add distance?

I'm actually working on the dam. It'd be VERY cool. It's more than 1 mile across, and would fix most of the issues. It also connects to some cool service roads on the other side.

However, since 911, they have security issues. Still, I'm working on it.

The other option I had is to reverse the direction of the course. so, you'd still run up a hill, but I'm not sure if it's steeper/longer or about the same.

We could also make running through the expo center the Longhorn Energy Lab, and make it fun/exciting....

So, keep the ideas coming

Since I did not do this last year would 3 loops add to the congestion of runners - I would think 2 would be better.

the more i think about it i like 2 loops, yes the way out to the expo isnt appealing and there is no cover from the sun if it really hot again, but there are less spectators and thus you could unwind some. Have to agree with mike, after imaz, 3 loops isnt too appealing. the dam idea would be cool

3 loops of a 13.1 mile run means each loop is 4.37 miles.  If you have 1000 athletes then you will have an athlete running every 23 feet (if they are evenly spread out and on the course at the same time).  What I'm getting at is that a 3 loop course could become crowded.  One reason I don't like big marathons, like Chicago, is that you run with someone 3' in front, back, left and right.  I vote for two loops.

I raced last year... will be cheering on my boyfriend this year... I say 2 loops.

If it's hot, it's hot. Running by the Expo or not running out there isn't going to fix the heat. There really isn't any shade on the run that went through the grass and up the huge hill.

Having an Energy Lab sounds like a really cool idea! Spectators would appreciate sitting in some shade to cheer on people. And that would be fun for the racers.

I also love the idea of a King of the Hill winner, but if it's only 2 loops... it might not work so well.

Last year, it was all the pre race talk of the bike course and now it's all run course talk. I wonder how many are
going to underestimate the bike now Wink

Personally, I'm probably going to limit myself to the aquabike, so as a run-spectator (assuming I'm done while most of y'all are still running) I'm voting for a 3-loop run course.

soo true I know I never made the connection to be worried about a hilly bike course then the land suddenly turning flat for the run... but it was the heat that killed me out there and there is nothing anyone can do about that..

I might be an aquabiker also

Here is my recollection of the route. I'm obviously off somewhat as the run I mapped out is 12.5 miles, but that should give you a ballpark idea.
