Regular 57 Austin, TX | Subject: RE: Longhorn Ironman 70.3 Austin : Official Thread Just decided to do this. Only did my first sprint ever this May with another coming in August. I'll be registering on payday this week. I've managed to bike the distance a few times over the past month or so but so far the longest open water swim I've done was a half mile and run/walk 10k. Do you experienced folks think it's realistic to improved to 70.3 distance by Oct? Excited but terrified :-) |

Can someone enlighten me about "Quadzilla"? Sounds like nothing but fun. +1 What is this "quadzilla?" Sounds like it would be a really tough uphill during the last bit of the run... Quadzilla is a "fun" little hill that will make your legs burn, and your lungs jump out of your chest. Its a grass hill that is probably a 80-100 gain in elevation in a short distance. You'll do it 2x. Theres an aid station at the bottom of the hill, and a timer at the top to see who climbed it the fastest for the day. |

Alpharetta, Georgia | Subject: RE: Longhorn Ironman 70.3 Austin : Official Thread I thought I'd heard something about camping at/near the race site? Can anyone confirm or point me to info about it? I camped at IM Kansas 70.3 and it was a blast! And cheap! Didn't have to fight ANY traffic either. Just rolled out of bed and walked to transition. Who sleeps the night before a race anyway? |

Member 60 | Subject: RE: Longhorn Ironman 70.3 Austin : Official Thread So here are my questions. I have complted several sprint races. I have also competed a half marathon this year finishing at 1:42. My concern is more of the swim and bike. I am not a bad swimmer but a terrible biker. I avearged 16.1 miles for 23 miles the other day. Like i said I am a slow biker, but i think i could make the cut off as I looked previous and people were biking in the 15's and 14s. Do you think somebody can go from sprint to HIM in 3 months? I ran the half about 3 months ago, and just been doing small runs here and there. I know you can't tell becase i don't give a full amount of trianing or my condition but is it possible to do a HIM in just 3 months of hard dedication? If so I am realy considering doing this, although I live like 8 hours from Austin, I still think it would make me motivated to say I did. |

Master 1920 Ann Arbor, MI | Subject: RE: Longhorn Ironman 70.3 Austin : Official Thread This is a stupid question- but is there anyway to merge the two existing race entries on the BT log? Right now, there are 2 official BT entries, right? One for the 18th, one for the 25th- it's kind of confusing.... |

If so I am realy considering doing this, although I live like 8 hours from Austin, I still think it would make me motivated to say I did. Is it possible? Yes, but be prepared to suffer. What you're missing out on - and what most 20-week plans are full of early on - is all the base building that makes a HIM or full IM manageable, so you're going to be doing this without having the cardio base already there. You're better than the average sprint participant in that you can do a half-mary at a relatively quick pace, but you don't have the base in the swim or the bike and the bike is the key to a successful HIM(imo). My suggestion would be to pick a later HIM, maybe even one early next year, and go through a proper training plan beforehand. Longhorn is hilly and HOT, and you need to prepare for both. |

Regular 57 Austin, TX | Subject: RE: Longhorn Ironman 70.3 Austin : Official Thread Question...I signed up for the Clyds...weighed 221 when I registered. I've since dropped to 215 with 13 weeks to go, so I could see myself possibly breaking 200 by race day at this rate. If it looks like that's going to happen when should I notify to switch to age group? I don't want to switch until I know with some certanty that I'll be below 200 |

Orlando 70.3 in May was my first and I am looking to beat that time as well as have fun. "Quadzilla" sounds challenging so when I see it, my mind will need to shift into Dolph Lundgren mode: "I Must Crush You." Also driving down from Memphis and trying to be there on Friday so I can check out the area etc. Looking forward to it!!! ) |

Anyway, what are the usual weather temps for Oct in Austin? just want to make sure if I should train with heat in mind, thanks! Last year was hot, but it was also a couple weeks earlier in the year. It could be in the 70s or 80s, maybe even low 90s if we get a late heat wave. Mid-late October is a pretty unpredictable time in terms of temperature. |

Extreme Veteran 461 Cedar Park, Texas | Subject: RE: Longhorn Ironman 70.3 Austin : Official Thread I'm in for my first HIM. I'll be the slightly (snicker, chortle) overweight soccer mom who's too stubborn to know when to quit! Not going for speed so much as simply getting through the race. I went out to watch it last year and couldn't resist giving it a go this year. For those of you who aren't locals, the weather around here is unpredictable at best. October is usually moderate temps - I'm actually more worried about rain than heat. But this year has been weirder than most. We had a stupid-hot and dry summer, then one week of pleasant temps, then 2 weeks of gray drizzly weather. All that to say who knows what it will be like on race-day. The saying around here is that if you don't like the weather, wait 20 min. I went out on the bike course last weekend. Gotta watch for the giant cracks on some parts of the road! There are two short steep hills that will kick your booty if you don't know they are there and are in the wrong gear. #1 is immediately after the right turn onto Blue Bluff from Lindell, so you'd better be gearing down as you get ready to make that turn. #2 is shortly after the turn onto Monkey road at about the mid-way point - at least you can sorta see this one coming. The other hill of note is a series of longish climbs on Taylor - none of them bad at all individually, but they build on each other so they'll probably get your attention. The rest of the course was relatively fast in my opinion, and a pretty route. Kudos to Keith and his team for such a nice course! 4 weeks and counting! |

Alpharetta, Georgia | Subject: RE: Longhorn Ironman 70.3 Austin : Official Thread Got the email about the Sunday night BBQ tickets and it got me thinking. Didn't they give away a tri bike at the "after party" last year? Me and the athlete I came to support slept through the after event last year - but I haven't heard a mention of any big ticket giveaways for this year. Have you? Any BTers going to the Sunday BBQ?

Regular 132 College Station | Subject: RE: Longhorn Ironman 70.3 Austin : Official Thread I'm not sure if this is the water temperature for lake decker or the overall high for the day but this lake decker fishing report says the water is clear and the temperature is 81F http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/fishboat/fish/action/reptform2.php?lake... I think it's the water temperature because the high in Austin on Sept. 30 was 89F. I've been checking this regularly and it has dropped significantly in the past few weeks. |

Regular 53 Fleming Island | Subject: RE: Longhorn Ironman 70.3 Austin : Official Thread I have a bike case due to traveling a lot. I use FEDEX Ground to ship my bike and have no problems at all. Typically takes 4 days to arrive at my destination. UPS charges extra money if you don't pack your bike in a brown box! Shocked me when I shipped with them and that was the last time. If you don't have a bike case, some bike shops rent them. Hope this helps. As for taking on a plane, also recommend plastic bike case. Southwest charges $50 one way. All other airlines start at $100 one way. |
